What do you think Phil should have done instead? Hire a prostitute? If Andy was stuck in the same day, she could avoid being lonely with zero "set ups", it would take her 5 minutes to find a nice guy to bring home. What choice does Phil have unless he wants to be alone everyday?

The original script started with Phil already in the time loop. He woke up on Feb 2nd and already knew everything about everyone in the town, and the audience would have to figure out how he knew all of this and what was going on. The filmmakers changed the script because they thought the audience would be confused.

This year Phil saw his shadow and predicted 6 more weeks of winter. It has been a holiday since 1887. Businesses are open on this day. Nice reactions to the original Groundhog Day, Evie!!!!🎬👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽

Bill Murray and director Harold Ramis were long time friends. They acted together in Stripes and Ghostbusters, and Harold directed Bill in Caddyshack. Unfortunately, they had a falling out during the making of this movie which they never resolved. Harold Ramis died in 2014. Bill hadn't spoken with Harold since Groundhog Day, something he regretted deeply after his once long time friend passed away.

@TenTonNuke

All other external factors were removed and Phil was still miserable. Which means it wasn't others that made him so depressed, it was himself. Who are you going to blame for hating everything when we freezeframe your life and the only thing in it is you? He had to learn to love himself ("I don't even like myself!") before he could move on. And all the stuff he tried at first - money, sex, food, lawlessness - didn't make him happy. Turns out that helping others made him happy, something he was not doing in his former life.

To be fair, apart from a few unknown movies, this is one of the first. Certainly the first mainstream movie to do it. And so all others, from Edge of Tomorrow to Source Code to Palm Springs, were basically paying homage to Groundhog Day. It's kind of like when people watch Halloween and say, "Not this old trope again!" without realizing that Halloween created the trope.

While this is a great movie, I disagree on great writing. Things would not be the same outside when he is walking out slowly from his apartment and when he is running from the apartment. He would arrive at places at different times, so everything would be completely different. Not to mention that his own change in behavior would change stream of thoughts of everyone around him, so they would not act and talk in the same way every time. But of course, you are supposed to just relax and have fun with this one, without giving it too much thought

He was granted a new life. It took however long required, to cast off the old life and create a much better, kinder more caring individual. I heard it could have been a thousand years of repeated days for this to happen. I love this movie. It's awesome seeing the progression of his character. I've seen it many times, but I always tune in to people reacting to it for the first time. To a person every one I've ever watched absolutely hates his character and winds up enjoying what he becomes. Produced, directed and co-wrote by the late great Harold Ramis. RIP. If you haven't seen it, he even stars along with Bill Murray in Ghostbusters. Great reaction. Do get well soon. Waiting on more of your reviews. As we say in Texas; y'all be safe.

I love that you realized what a creepy person Phil is at first. I’ve seen a few people watch this movie and just kind of pass over that detail, but it’s so important, especially when he’s save scumming his dates with Nancy and Rita (and probably everyone else in town based on him knowing everyone at the diner). It takes him seeing the depths of himself before he can start building a better person in the world, which is he message I took from it. Be a good person and good to those around you, not for personal gain or to curry favor with someone, but because it’s the best way to be. Groundhog Day happens to be my birthday and one of my favorite movies ever made. It’s such an uplifting story despite the suicides in the middle of it. Glad you enjoyed it.

Jungian philosophy teaches that we need to see our shadow-self, the things we fear and hide about ourselves. Only then can we assimilate those things we despise and try to hide from others and be who we really are. Phil needs to see his shadow, come to terms with himself and forgive. Then he can get out of his ever-repeating day. It's a wholesome family treatise on self-analysis.

Fun movie. Enjoyed your reaction and analysis. To bad you weren't feeling well during recording. Phil shouldn't be tricking Rita and at first he probably only wanted to sleep with her. However it's not weird that Phil says I love you to Rita because he's been repeating the same day for years at that point. So he actually fell in love with her. My favorite part is Phil's transformation from a selfish jerk to a guy going out of his way to help people. He goes through dark self destructive times, but it leads to his real transformation. That begins after he stops trying to trick Rita or harm himself, but starts doing and learning things to improve himself and helps others. Eventually Rita was impressed by his attitude and behavior changes. Especially how he's being genuinely kind to others. At that point there was no need for him to trick Rita. She willingly chooses Phil on her own and buys a night with him at the charity bachelor auction. It took many years, but in the end Phil literally became a better person.

Belated thanks for this excellent reaction to a fun movie. I love this, and every time I see it I pick up something new. For a first timer, you get it better than I did in my first half dozen times seeing it. I really empathise with Phil, even at the start. I'm just as grumpy, (although I don't say those things out loud) and I can see myself going through his early reactions. I love the way he got so frantic that he kept getting slapped, and then just gave up. After trying everything to break the spell, I'd do what Phil did and pick up a whole bunch of skills, read everything in the town library, and every house I could break into. Hell, with enough time, even I might learn to play an instrument. I hope that I would see my way to becoming as selfless as he did. Being unable to save the old man would be devastating, though. That's a powerful message that there are some things you just cannot change no matter what. Not so sure about the romantic attraction, though. McDowell is as cute as a button, but that syrupy sweetness would get cloying in five minutes flat, so I guess I'd be trapped in the loop forever.

On the surface, it seems like he broke the cycle by being nice or falling in love. But I think what really did it was saying "Whatever happens tomorrow, I'm happy now." He had power, knowledge, even true love the penultimate night, but none of those things broke the cycle because in his words, "I don't even like myself." He was seeking happiness in external pursuits, which made his monotonous lifestyle feel like the same day repeating itself. But once he became happy with who he was inside, he could truly enjoy the next day as well. Until then, the curse was really a blessing preventing him from wasting his life away in misery.

I heard someone say that the moral to this uplifting fable is...."If you don't grow, you are doomed to relive the same day". We saw Phil grow from a taker to a giver, so that makes a lot of sense. Now that you saw this movie you are ready for a less laid-back Groundhog Day on steroids > "The Edge of Tomorrow", the heroine in that movie is also named Rita (I think that was an ohmage to this film). Actually, in 2009 Ramis (the film's co-writer and director) revised his estimate to "between 30 and 40 years" saying that just based on Phil's piano-playing ability, many accomplished pianists had told him that there was no way Phil could learn to play that well in just 10 years. THEIR best guesstimate for the playing ability he demonstrated was about 15-20 years for a talented child growing up learning the piano from scratch. To adjust that to Phil's situation (Well into his 30s and say, average to slightly above average talent), their best guess was between 30-40 years.... so THAT is the figure Ramis now gives everyone.

Glad that you picked up early on that Phil is not a protagonist that we should be rooting for in the first part of the film. If Phil was already a good person at the start of the movie then there would be no point for God/fate/whatever to put him into this loop so he could change and become a better person. There's another movie with a similar time loop - Happy Death Day - where the protagonist is not a nice person and is rude to pretty much everyone, but as the film goes on and she tries to solve the mystery of her murder (it's a horror/comedy) she realizes how bad of a person she is and tries to become better.

Andy MacDowell is the kindest, sweetest, prettiest person. Once while on a late night show, discussing politics, she advocated a mob marching on the US Capitol and killing all of the Republicans. So sweet.

Phil’s punishment is very much due to karma done by the universe I think. It changed not after that initial good day with Rita because it only had to do with her. Once that was done, he decided to become selfless instead of selfish and only then did the universe release him. There were a lot of rewrites and debates about how this movie was gonna go - originally they were gonna have the story start in the middle of Phil’s predicament and the audience would have to figure out why he knew everything. Also, this would be the last movie this director and Murray worked together on because of many various tensions arising while filming. Only when Ramis was on his death bed, did Murray come to him and reconcile

People below recommending other Bill Murray movies, but I want to recommend a really good Andie McDowell (Rita) movie called Four Weddings and a Funeral, also from the early '90s, a wonderful and witty mix of romance and real life. I can't find any reactions to it, you could be the first!

The producers have said that he was there for 10,000 years. So that would be 3650000 days. I've often wondered if each of these days branched off into its own alternate universe that continued down that day's trajectory. So there's a universe where the psycho weatherman jumped off the building and killed himself.

That was from an earlier draft, and what Stephen Tobolowski said Harold Ramos has said, but in interviews, Harold Ramis has said that the character was trapped for around 30-40 years. Now, a lot of people have accepted that it was actually around 34 years.

Laid back one? I wish more reactors were laid back. It's funny when you make a face or look over into the camera. I get it. Some reactors just talk too much; they talk over the dialogue in the movie, so I don't know if you feel you're not talking too much, but I enjoyed the faces and looks. It worked. Ever talk to a friend and something happens where you're standing? You can look at each other and convey a feeling with no words. So again, I enjoyed the reaction a lot.

You said you only knew about Groundhog Day from the expression, but did you know that the expression comes from _this_ _movie_ ? Before this film, Groundhog Day was just an obscure minor holiday celebrated in the U.S. and Canada!

37:23 - it's not really a good ending. From Phil's perspective he's known her for over 30 years. From Rita's perspective she's known him for a day and he's suggesting they move in together?

Why did the old man always recognize him? Wht did he die in different ways? Why did phil call him dad and pop? Why does the bartender seem to know something? Some math foljs on the net seem to calculate, for him to get good at everything he did, plus know people's histories, he was in this loop 33 years. I say, 2 things had to happen. 1. A completely unselfish and happy day. 2. Rita had to give all she had, because she wanted to be with him. Christmas vacation guy has been in slmost all Bill movies, since Caddyshack. He's Bill's brother!!
