The city is based on Kowloon Walled City (a giant labyrinthine, densely built and densely populated cityblock in British Hong Kong, originally a Chinese enclave) that was torn down in 1993-1994 after its 33,000 inhabitants had been evicted (many of which had lived there because rent was cheap as the blcok was basically ungoverned. Thankfully an urban photographer had made detailed photographies of the Walled City prior to that (and published a book about it), and interviewed the people who lived there. Wow, they really nailed cat behaviour, when the bot dressed it with that backpack, that's exactly what I expected to happen (expect it takes a few more days for a cat to "get used to it").
