2:44 Shadow actually does have an unintentional relation to Sonic. His creator based him and the biolizard prototype off of a mural he studied that prophesied the fight between Super Sonic and Perfect Chaos, it's also why his quills stand up like Super Sonic's.

I hate to be a nerd emoji on this but while Shadow was most likely based off a mural that prophesized Super Sonic, the mural mural depicted Super Sonic fighting (or rather chasing) Eggman. There is a Chaos mural, but it seems to be unrelated, even with Project Shadow as a whole since the connections between the Biolizard and Perfect Chaos are much less prominent than the 2 hedgehogs.

Nah you're right those wires got completely mixed in my head, I still think the Biolizard and Chaos have that connection when you consider the Master Emerald shrine they had replicated on the Ark, plus all the Artificial Chaos experiments that were still left over.

Praise for mentioning Dark Pit from Kid Icarus Uprising, my favorite Nintendo game of all time and my favorite take on a dark counterpart. obviously, Pittoo isn’t actually evil, but since he’s so busy on trying to prove himself better than Pit and fight him, it takes him a while to figure this out. i love how he is almost as heroic as Pit is, just in a different way.

I do love the idea of counterparts. These dark mirrors to the protagonist that can show opposite traits or traits the hero keeps deep inside. They don't even need to be evil, just the opposite. My favourite is probably Metal Sonic not only cause he's really cool but also because of Sonic Heroes where he's so mad he's an inferior copy, he goes to extreme lengths to get the main hedgehog out of the picture so that he can be Sonic. Warikyuun feels like a very insired take on what your antithesis (so glad I'm not the only one who has trouble with that word) would be.

omg i ADORE this design!! love the backstory too ahaha one of my favorite evil counterparts is protoman from the megaman series just because he’s kinda a blend between the two types of counterparts you mentioned! he wasn’t created to mimic megaman, instead being the prototype robot for all the humanoid robots, (in a sense megaman is HIS counterpart lol) like the 2nd type, but later he ends up becoming the evil counterpart of megaman due to manipulation from dr. wily, so in another sense he WAS created because of megaman like the 1st type, but only the evil side of him. although, later in the series protoman does change his ways and becomes more of a help to megaman, like knuckles in sonic

I love these type of videos! This one in particular strikes a pretty great balance of video essay, a little bit of Mari lore, and a fun art prompt! I feel like there's not much else out there like this, and if there is, then you just do it exceptionally well!

Dark counterparts to heroes can be fun if done well, and this video is a pretty decent showcase of the types of dark counterparts there are. There's actually another kind that technically counts that wasn't mentioned at all in the video; they're the kinds that are kinda similar to rivals that mirror the hero, but are only potentially linked to them in a symbolical way reflective of the hero's own dark thoughts and, in some cases, even trauma. A perfect example I can give is the final boss of Klonoa 2: Lunatea's Veil; I won't say their name since they're basically a walking spoiler, but if you know the context of the first game and put the pieces together... yeah.

I wish I was my 15 year old self so THIS kind of content would nurture me earlier in my life! I’ve had so many of the ideas you mentioned on the video when I was younger and looking for more direction on art (the one time I got into an art course they put me to draw fruit baskets and that was NOT what I was looking for), but never got anyone to talk about them! I've seen shadow as a hero than an anti hero. In sa2 shadow was mostly evil just beacuse of altered memories, but after he rememberes what Maria trully wanted he Instantly turned good. Cool art btw

Really liking how this turned out! You got a great hook and used both fantastic music and sound design alongside a well-segmented script to keep things interesting. If you've ever seen Paracosm Party, your stuff feels like it could be formatted in a similar way for future videos, but for theme reasons instead of gameplay or biology reasons. Your art felt like it fit in really well this time around, and led into your own counterpart's art and personal story too. This is a hit of a video. Damn good job. Really excited to see more. To add onto more evil counterparts are two characters who I think fit in foil or mirror. These are outside of video games but I thought it be cool to mention them In 2002, Japan aired a battle royal like show known as Kamen Rider Ryuki, part of the Kamen Rider franchise. Our protagonist who I’ll just call Ryuki(his “hero name”), can be seen as your classic youthful(at the time), happy to go Protagonist. Through out the series we see various characters who become allies or obstacles for Ryuki like Kamen Rider Ouja and all. Later on in the series and the movie we are met with mirror world counterparts, only one and that’s the Black Mirror Dragon Kamen Rider Ryuga. A menace to the characters as a whole, stopping Ouja’s large fusion monster known as Genocider, and stopping Ryuki in his tracks, this mirror clone was a powerful force and a favorite of mine with his appearance still being up to date. Watch Kamen Rider Ryuki if you can, then the movie so you can see Ryuga’s power. His current debut is in past year’s winter movie Kamen Rider Geats x Revice Battle Royal In terms of Foil, Kamen Rider Genm of 2016’s Kamen Rider Ex-aid may be the best pick I can think of. He follows a bit of the shadow role in terms of looks but shines with his character as a whole. A fan favorite towards character and actor, or its just me. Genm, unlike Ryuga’s minor appearance of the main series, has a whole story for him from Villain to anti hero…to villain again. The character is such a oddity but gotta love him for that. Base form is a purple and black color scheme with Fleetway Sonic Red eyes conpared to Ex-Aid’s(the main character) Lively pink and green with silver touches and a cartoonish orangish eyes. This theme continues on for most of his transformation except for his own unique form known as Dangerous Zombie, making him immortal for a while. Again like Ryuga, check out the series. This time you’ll have more content of Genm. Appearances are as strong as Ryuga’s, being his recent was during the spin off series Kamen Rider Outsiders and it’s still going Hope this was some fun bits of info to learn and enjoy the show if you do try checking it out

Maybe Warikyuun missed Calamari, so she made a robot of some sort in response to that? Now I'm really invested with this idea! And I actually like this type of idea, you sounds like you have so much fun doing this and it's great! Also could it be that Wari and Calamari parted ways because she didn't align well with the magical girl power? (in some magical girl story, they used these concept of “corruption”/“fallen” where they're like the counterpart of magical girl. So an antagonist. So Warikyuun could also fall under these categories.) Maybe she wanted to understand emotions, and in order to do so, she did a bunch of experiment to people. (Pushing them to their limits, make them have a mental breakdown and etc), the existence of Calamari and magic also made her re-learn a lot of things. Making her able to create the “love potions”

My evil counterpart would be called "Nalyd". His story is that I actually drew him back in to the early-mid 00's when everyone was making their own dark edgy oc's. He'd grown in sketch magic power ever since, to the point where'd he'd become a multiversal threat that seeks to erase existence and redraw it in his own image.

Honestly… this reminds me of something similar I’ve done on the past with some of my characters, because I made a few mirror villains (aka basically perfect copy’s just evil) And then eventually moved on to make real villains that just contrast the characters weaknesses and exploiting everything they can rather than my characters use of only fighting with what they found out on the battlefield What I’m saying is, good job!❤ and thank you, you’ve reminded me of something important I forgot about long ago when making characters

Em actually, there is one other dark mirror counterpart. 🤓☝️ This is completely separate from the mainline Sonic series, but in the Archie books, Sonic had an evil counterpart named Scourge (aka Evil Sonic aka Anti-Sonic). He lives in the anti-Mobius called, "Moebius" and wants to have more attention than Sonic by ruining his day as much as possible.

Another example of a mirror villain would be scourge the hedgehog. In the archie comics (not cannon) he was an evil version of sonic from another dimension. And he was basically the opposite of sonic but at the same time the same. Sonic protected his world scourge ruled it with an iron fist. Sonic protected and loved his friends and scourge treated his friends like crap. But at the same time they were both arogant and cocky. An example of a foil catagory villain would be surge and kit. Surge the tenric and kitsuname the fenic were normal people who were seemingly kidnapped and manipulated by dr starline in the IDW comics. Dr starline them her believe thier only purpose was to destroy sonic. Until they rebeled. They are the opisite of sonic and tails but at the same time the same almost like scourge so they kinda are a mix between the foil catagory and the mirror category. Either way surge was arogant like sonic but also too cocky to the point of kinda bullying her sidekick kit. Kit is smart like tails but a bit too reliant on surge. They represent sonic and tails and are kinda identical but mostly represent thier flaws. Oh i just realized i kinda made a long comment and as you can tell im a sonic fan. Either way thats all

I would honestly think that Warikyuun parted ways with their magical girl powers due to them focusing on their degree rather than helping out others because they want to be happy. However after finding out that Marikyuun is not only happy but also successful she is now obsessed with capturing the squid to create her "love" potion. Or at least that's my head cannon.
