Evil Dead Rise made me care about the main cast the same way Hellraiser 2022 made me care about the main cast, then it forces you to watch them get deaded awfully. Such a good movie. Excellent video, May!

Same here, along with the 2019 adaption of The Color Out Of Space with Nicholas Cage. I wasn't expecting to care about the family of characters as much as I did so it was extra terrible when Stuff Started Happening.

I love the change of setting. The characters talking about what they’re gonna be doing stuff the next day and they have to start packing, then one thing goes wrong and the domino effect ruins everything. I guess it shows how bad an abusive family unit can completely ruin your normal day-to-day life.

There was a missed opportunity for them to do a Texas Chain Saw Massacre-esque dinner scene with the deadite family and the remaining human family members, but other than that this movie was so slay

+100 on your take, I loved EDR and it was exactly because they introduce actual emotional stakes. I also appreciated that, while not being super super funny, it had more humor in it than Evil Dead 2013, which seems part of the equation for nailing an Evil Dead.

When Evil Dead 2 came out in 1987, my dad and my brother rented it. I walked in on the part with Deadite Linda dancing with her own severed head and lost my goddamned mind. I was 7 years old and it scared the living shit out of me haha. As an adult, the scene that really spooked me in Evil Dead (1981) was the card reading scene.

As always, I love your perspective! Thanks for putting this up, May. Honestly, I hadn't read that deep into the new one, but everything you're saying is totally there, in retrospect. As a fan of the franchise since I was like 12, this movie felt really great. I hope they carry the personal stuff forward into the franchise. You probably know this, but they're making a cartoon version of Ash vs Evil Dead, so the Ash, Kelly, and Pablo stuff will continue developing. I'm super stoked for it.

I love this thoughtful take and the metaphors are on point, but also OMG it was so beautifully gory. Like, all of the absolute worst physical pains we can imagine happening, happen. SPOILER ALERT SPOILER ALERT. tattoo gun to the eye? Check. Cheese grater to the thigh? Check. Persons in a wood chipper? Check. Plus much more. It’s ALL there. I adored it.

Preferred this to the remake. It's got more energy, the characters are a touch more memorable and the Mumite put in a great performance. The violence is more creative aswell, and has just a tiny bit more of that Evil Dead splatstick without undermining the horror.

Just got back from seeing it yesterday. And to me probably made me the most disturted out of all of them, could be because I saw it on the big screen. But it was really good on how disturbing it was, seeing this innocent family get torn apart by the evil, was quite the experience to see. Also I like the idea of the book of the dead being anywhere, it doesn’t have to take place in a cabin, the book could show up in any kind of place really.

This movie was way better than I expected. My roommate forced me to watch after we watched A Serbian Film and I actually was surprised by my reaction to both of those movies. They were both movies that were horrific at face value and also had metaphorical depth that made them worthy watches through a metaphorical lens.

I made a script that combines Evil dead and Spider man. The Green goblin is basically a composted deadite, after he dies the green goblin gas in a sentient manner follows Peter Parker and causes all the bad luck he has in 2 and 3. The green gas ( the invisible force from evil dead) can even change the properties of matter and weakened the effectiveness of that rare material that Doctor Octavius used for his fusion reactor, thus causing a explosion strong enough to bring venom to earth. Also Ash, who was working at that theater in Spiderman 2 or 3 gets a job a Stark industrys. Then the necronomicon combines with venom and then Ash gets a awesome spider arm and helps Iorn man and Spiderman. Spider Ash

The only bit I didn’t like was the hallways scene, the biting the eye and shooting into someone’s mouth would be funny in a. Film that keeps up the silliness but this one like the 2013 remake was pretty dark with sarcastic humour. I also wish the mum had popped the eye with the tattoo needle, I was expecting it to go rlly hard with the disturbing horror with the way people were talking about it. Other than that I loved it 8/10

Did not catch the family toxicity analogy in the movie but that a) I guess speaks well of my family, and b) makes me appreciate it more. Everyone I've talked to about the movie (which I saw today), I've had to explain that the movie isn't horror-comedy, and they are dismayed by that. I think it has more than a few ridiculous horror moments in it that someone with a macabre sense of humor, or is pretty desensitized to horror can grip onto and laugh at it. The movie does not wait a lot of time to tell you exactly how things is gonna be - an evil dead is gonna get done - but does it in a way that you might make you chuckle if you've stepped outside the story a bit. It's absolutely an Evil Dead movie, it knows what trappings to wear, but wants to do something more than kill a bunch of morons in a cabin. Think I'm gonna recommend it despite it being far from Raimi's original horror-camp-comedy roots. ETA: Oh, also want to add that it's immensely rare that a sequel for a franchise tightens the scope of the action rather than ballooning it out. Excellent choice.

i’m going to watch it in theater tonight so i’ll have to revisit this later !!!!!! almost more excited for the new may leitz review akskskdbfbdbhaaaaaaaaaaa !!!!!!!!!! EDIT: good movie!!! really very good movie!!! i liked it a lot!!! before the movie started i was really scared i was in the wrong theater because there was a family with small children a couple seats down, but nope, they were there to see it too. it seems kinda super fucked up to take your kids out to see an evil dead movie in my opinion. i think morgan davies is my first ever celebrity crush. although he looks an awful lot like a coworker of mine, so thats kinda weird.

I thought this one was okay. I wish they did more with the bank vault/priest back story. The neighbors were literal canon fodder no names. And what really gets me is the youngest child told a story about a ghost that haunts you if you carry change around. I thought that story would come back to something but it's meaningless overall.

Finally got to watch it so I can come watch some of the videos about it! Over all, I agree with pretty much everything here. I honestly think it's my favorite Evil Dead movie so far. Like I enjoy the gore and the blood and the things horror movies tend to offer. But a horror movie was a great story and great characters will always Trump that for me. And luckily, this movie had both! Also, I have a lot of trauma revolving around my family, and haven't talked to my dad or step mom in 12 years. So maybe that helped. I was also really happy in that it didn't hold back. I saw the kids and figured the kids probably wouldn't get it too bad. Most movies don't want to kill kids. But then I saw one of them get their arms ripped off, and saw that that was not a problem for them. So while I'm not necesarily into watching kids die, it's also refreshing to see a horror movie with kids where we just know that the kids are gonna be fine no matter what happens.

Totally agreed, really loved this film and had such an excellent time in the theater. SPOILER CRITIQUES One sincere, one silly, one from a film bro asshole type: 1. Just like the remake I wish they would spend less time on the lore but it wasn’t too bad 2. When mommy is like “I want ur soul” then goes to her sis tummy and is like “two souls!!” I’m like that is some pro life shit :/ 3. We have the scene where the priest is talking about how he tried everything to kill the demons and even says something like “I lit them aflame but they only reveled and danced in the fire” and in the next scene lil bro lights sis on fire and she collapses :/

America and American movies are really weird with how taboo they consider kids getting killed or hurt in horror movies. Like it's super rare and when it does happen it's almost always off-screen. Was quite refreshing to have the kids go through exactly the same as the adults and onscreen.

Yeah, I think CGI almost always just looks weird and bad. I MUCH prefer practical effects. Like practical effects are at least entertaining and fun even if they're bad. I'm not against the use of CGI if it legitimately can enhance something or if it is the only way to achieve something, but it's very lazy and overused.
