i don't know if this became one of my favorite movies because it was extremely raw on my teenage brain that had been brutalized by neglect and abuse my whole life, or because it was a TRIP to watch it while coming off an antidepressant cold turkey and having one of the worst withdrawal experiences i've ever had.

I always see the scene of laura dern talking to the other women about the man that broke up with one of them as less them discussing a specific character in laura dern's (or nikki's, or sue's) story, but rather her experience of realizing she is becoming victimized - that moment after being victimized where you realize that you've become that thing you always distanced yourself from, that you never thought you'd end up as - the woman who gets raped, or abused, or cheated on, or murdered, or the sex worker (iirc most of the women are either stated or implied to be sex workers) It's like she's suddenly seeing the ghost of all other women who've been victimized and cast aside and realizing she's becoming one of them, and they're welcoming her in. In that moment she's terrified, not necessarily of them, but that she's with them, by the end she's welcomed them as close friends. the locomotion scene i kind of take as being either them showing the potential for community around that shared trauma of being victims of misogynistic violence, or showing the "song and dance" women are expected to perform and be cast aside - or both. their sudden vanishing to me being a statement that it's the traces of the past lingering on into laura's/nikki's/sue's life, rather than them literally being there.

I choose to believe that the special effects aren't like that due to low budget, thats just what ghosts actually look like

Ok I’m back after finally watching the fourth kind (spoilers) and I gotta say while it is a pretty well told story the thing that gets me about the whole thing is the “alien voice” that’s supposedly speaking sumerian just blows it for me. The fact they use an alias for the guy “translating” it means i can’t check his credentials and they don’t specify in the credits what university he’s supposedly working at. The “subtitles” don’t match up to the audio in the same way every single “ghost voice captured!” thing doesn’t and i *appreciate* them casting doubt on her at the end but just in this era where we are far past ancient aliens being obviously ridiculous bringing up ancient astronaut theory with Sumerian art made me so annoyed. Anyway it was a pretty good watch that just pissed me off

The reason flower of flesh and blood really rocks my socks is because uts fkn disgusting and I didn't have to watch any SA. It proves that disturbing exploitative horror gore doesn't have to revolve around SA. 😍

Guts was not disturbing to me, it was shocking sure, but it did not disturbing. The story that really disturbed me was the short about the… child dolls, I don’t remember the name. But that was heartbreaking because it felt so real, like sure someone’s intestine can be sucked out into a pool filter but that’s just a one time freak accident. This other short is an everyday occurrence and it was disturbing because of that. It felt m feeling horrified and just sad

Lynch was very into Transcendental Meditation, and ideas from that are all over IE.
One time me and my best friend were looking for ginger snaps on Tubi, instead we came across “gingerbread man vs evil bong” and neither of us had any idea what it was and we watched it together and laughed at the bullshittery and buffoonery for 45 minutes straight and the entire time we were wondering who the target audience for this was until the end we locked eyes as we came to the devastating realization that we were indeed the target audience.

I watched this video a year ago when you dropped it not knowing anything about David Lynch's film work (aside from twin peaks and dune). Now, I finally watched the film (and his other works) for myself and came back to this video more hyped than I have ever been (and a big fan of the short film he made with this "Rabbits"). David Lynch truly is an artist and a dreamer, he will be missed.
