You people that don’t get him , It makes me happy that you don’t get him . He chose this path that everyone told him would never work. He painted a 2 story house to get enough money to buy his first fender strat as a young fellow. Now his Strats are Made by Fender with his Name. Oh , and the Marshalls , they have his name on them also. Yup he will never make it playing classical violin notes , on a guitar . I’m glad the haters are still around to watch. 🎸.

interesting to see all the positive comments. the parts he plays, he mostly plays quite well, I was impressed at the fast interlude. But a whole bunch of licks are missing, and it's the harder (and cooler) ones. Where's the descending lick at the start that he just paused for?

I love how he just clangs that Strat right on the ground when his guitar tech is running out for the hot-swap

Yngwie has lost nothing technically in 40 years, but he doesn't seem to have gained anything, either. (I'll avoid the obvious, cheap joke.) If you like the neoclassical style, there's still nobody better: but that's because it's a virtuosic dead end, artistically. As a result, you really only need one Yngwie recording to hear everything he has ever done; live performances are just coarser versions of the records. He had his moment in the early 80s, and he undoubtedly raised the benchmark for certain kinds of technical ability. It's a shame that he never partnered with a really good songwriter or vocalist, or led a great band. That's the downside of ego.

But Yngwie has a lot of great albums and songs, not many can say that.

Great summary, I love how credit is given to YM for being a virtuoso in the comments, but when does anyone ever chill with one of his records?yeah ego can really stifle one’s musical creativity.

@@migzz7976 - in the 80's and 90's a lot of people chilled with his albums, but metal/rock isn't as popular as it was 30 years ago. That doesn't take anything away from his greatness. Just for the record... nobody gave Yngwie credit, he earned it. He is a virtuoso.

This guy leaves me cold. All flash and no substance. And what's with that huge bank of amps? Do you really have to turn it up to eleven to get your point (if there is one) across?

There's more soul in his vibrato than your comment. And he's a pompous ass, even.

I know what you mean, but gawd damn if he isn't the absolute king of all speed, flash, and no substance! The wall of Marshalls is just venerable rock tradition. Some guys still pray at that altar.

Even though Yngwie plays fast much of the time there's still a lot of substance behind what he plays. His critics often overlook his vibrato and bending, both are top notch. If you get a chance checkout songs like Crying, Brothers, Icarus Dream Suite, Overture 1383, Black Star, and Marching Out just to name a few. You'll see Yngwie plays with a lot of heart and feeling. Those songs are the epitome of inspiration.

@@epic103 Thanks for your reply. I will check out those tunes you listed. I am a huge fan of the guitar and love the fact that some people are so adept at it that they can transcend merely playing notes and get to something deep, soulful, and heartfelt. I am obsessed with Buckethead right now, and have been for the past year since I discovered him (what rock was I living under?). I must admit that I haven't heard much of Yngwie's stuff (again, what rock?) and your post has inspired me to do so. If you love acoustic guitar, check out "All in the Waiting" by Buckethead and then listen to "Sketches of Spain" from the same album. In "Sketches" the way he slides seamlessly from acoustic to electric is sublime.

@@David-dl4vh they're stacked humbuckers. Yngwie hasn't used single coils since the Dimarzio FS-1 in the early 80s. Since then it's always been humbuckers.
