This video details both thermostat replacement procedures (cutting the cowling and not cutting) and discusses the pros and cons of each. The Evinrude Johnson OMC V4 Bubble back is one of the most difficult thermostat jobs but we show you the easy quick way.
This is a true do it yourself video!
As an added bonus we will also share a word of encouragement with you about what the Lord has done for you and I.

So good to see and hear someone using the gifts God has given them to share the message of Christ's love and sacrifice and only means to the father and eternal life. God has not only saved me spiritually but physically through a Heart Transplant 36 yrs. ago. As far as repairs to a motor is concerned, I have a 115 Johnson that cut out on the lake the other day. Was completely dead till a number of minutes later when it turned over. Not sure if it was overheating or not since the alarm didn't sound. Will test dry doc to see if the heads are heating up and go from there. Like the idea of boring a couple of holes rather than cut a chunk out of the motor.

Thank you for this video. My 1988 90hp evinrude was never in salt water so that really helped, but I just replaced the exact same thermostat kit without removing anything but the three bolts and hoses. I had to use quality angled 7/16 12pt box end wrench to work the bolt out and once the box end started to get trapped at the curve of the motor housing, I used a very small open end wrench to get it the rest of the way out. I had about an 8th inch before the bolt touched the housing and it was free. Got it all out. When I put the new parts in place and bypass springs in the motor and ready I used tape to hold the parts loosely on the face of the plastic spacer and and thermostat housing to keep them from falling off while worming it onto the long springs. With some pressing force I started the three bolts in reverse order and before the thermostat gap was closed I pulled the tape out. I know this is not everyone's answer to this stupid design, but it can be done if the bolts aren't corroded and you are patient. But if they are corroded this is really the only answer. IMHO.

I have a 94/ 88 Evinrude SPL and my mechanic just replaced my thermostats and poppets without drilling or cutting my cowling. He removed the bottom cowling and then removed the 2 outside bolts on the thermostat housing. He said he had to modify a wrench but no cutting or drilling on my motor was involved. He thought he would have to remove the power head at first, but he said he did not have to do it.

You use the cork gasket for thermostats?
@JimTMcDaniels1

Thank you sharing how you have found to make this job doable. Let me add: ONCE AGAIN, a Video involving the possibility of BREAKING Bolts Fails to mention that when you are dealing with such bolts that you must remove: : If the bolt feels like it may break, they are full of corrosion crud. So you must give it patience and slight back and forth movement to work it out: So try to tighten it just something of a move, then try to looses in just something. Then repeat and repeat and repeat. So a rocking motion of back and forth without putting too much force in either direction where it may over stress the bolt and break it off. As you continue, if your observant enough, you may even see little sands of corrosion dropping out of bottom of the bolt as you do this. And that the bolt is able to move more than it did. Now you can't loose once you have some movement. Because if you are patient and keep only rocking the bolt back and forth back and forth, more corrosion will come out and the bolt will move even more from tight to loose. Of course also spray penetrating oil into the threads as you can and walk away and come back after soaking.

Would it have been possible to drill holes in front of the screws so the screws could be retracted? Then the holes could be covered with rubber hole plugs. Or is it needed to cut the big hole to be able to remove the thermo stat?

Thank you so much for the great video and your testimony. We need more folks like you. My only concern is that the sinners prayer is not anywhere in the Bible. We have to stick to the New Testament only, not add to or take away from it. We are to hear, believe, repent, confess and be baptized for salvation. No where in the NT do we see examples of people praying Jesus into there lives. This is an addition from men and not from God. Lets build one another up to good works and keep studying God's plan for us. Take Care.

It does say it in the New Testament. Romans 10:9-10. John 3:16-17. Furthermore we need to be born again John 3:3. The sinners prayer is an acknowledgement of ones sin and need for Jesus Christ.

I tried to take the cowling bolts out instead of cutting and you were right about the chance of the bolts snapping. The back right screw snapped off. After getting all the bolts out, the cowling only dropped about a 1/4". I ended up cutting the back out because the bolts holding the thermostats are frozen and even with the back cut out I still can't break them loose. oh well, I'll keep trying.

It takes about 1 hour to do this job with no cutting. Engine is lifted off the midsection using an engine lift, lifted from the flywheel. Use Evinrude's $40 lifting ring. The only thing you need is the thermostat kit and the midsection gasket, which now doubles as another PM you completed by replacing that gasket. Drop it back down and re-torque. If you're doing a water pump, its just as easy. Drop the lower unit off before proceeding with the powerhead lift. I've done a ton these. Tricks the shops won't share. Take care and God bless, read God's word daily. James 1:13

Thanks Doug, I figured the way to do it by the book would either require lifting the power head or dropping the cowling down. When I tried just backing out the bolts they hit the back of the cowling before threading all the way out. It is an old motor so for me cosmetically I am ok with the the cut removable cover. I am sure some people would opt for keeping it pretty on the back. Seems you would have to lift the power head pretty high to scrape all the old gasket off?? Thanks for share your technique and God bless.
