Evita 1980 Tony Award Wins Patti LuPone Mandy Patinkin Harold Prince Tim Rice Andrew Lloyd Webber

A friend of mine sent this for me to post, because they know I am the laziest person on earth and would never have taken the time to put it together myself. :-) It is a compilation of all the Evita wins from the 1980 Tony's. Their original video didn't feature Hal Prince's win, so I added that bit at the beginning, in case you notice that that bit looks slightly different. The rest of the wins are from a different copy of the 1980 Tony's. The video features Gilda Radner, Hal Prince, Dudley Moore, Tim Rice, Andrew 'Rat' Webber, Lynn Redgrave, Mandy Patinkin, Faye Dunaway, Patti LuPone, Mary Tyler Moore, Dick Van Dyke, Robert Stiawood and Jason Robards. I'm glad you like it! I had never seen all the clips together. To be honest, I had only ever watched Mandy's win, Patti's win and the performance, so it was interesting for me to see them all together, as well. :-)

You can see how nervous Patti was before they announced the winner and how overwhelmed she got. When she started her thank you's I could almost see her on the balcony preparing to sing Dont Cry for me Argentina.

Thanks so much for this! My God, everybody's so young! This is from my first year attending the Broadway theatre (now I'm old too). My first show was 'Oklahoma!' and I remember meeting Harry Groener afterwards. Now he's playing King Lear! Wish I'd seen every show that year, there used to be such an assortment of riches. Great memories!

Evita remains ALW's masterpiece by a long way. You can tell by the other nominations (Sugar Babies??) and the intro and exit musical numbers how radical and transformational it was and is. Only one attempt at a revival took place and it flopped because now one can come close to LuPone. Funny Girl and Streisand come to mind as a comparison or Callas and Norma

Do you have the full episode of Austin City Limits from 1980? Featuring Ralph Stanley and Uncle Walt's Band. It has the slate and countdown at the beginning, The Southwest Texas Public Broadcasting Council logo, Austin City Limits Season 5 opening sequence, as well as Lickona's introduction, and the closing credits with "London Homesick Blues". After that, Lickona reads the funding credits, and the 1971 PBS logo.
