The first galaxy game always had the scariest ending with the feeling that death is coming and everything in the entire universe is crumbling apart. Well in New Super Mario Bros. (DS), it did in the first fight with him, as it reduced him to his skeleton form and walked as the undead. In Super Mario Galaxy, his fight consisted of having him slam down onto one of the glass lava pads, where he'll destroy them but it'll hurt him as his tail will be on fire and he'll start running around until he'll eventually put it out. This whole "if Bowser is immune to lava/fire himself" thing seems to be quite inconsistent, seeing of how he always resides in it. Maybe it's just of how powerful the lava/fire itself is to where he wouldn't handle it or something.

Probably depends on how hot the lava is. Some lava is much cooler than other lava, and Bowzer's resistant to heat, but not completely immune to it. Incidentally, a star does not count as lava, and is hotter.
