I take a look at the evolution of Horace Horsecollar and Clarabelle Cow (Orazio Cavezza e Clarabella Mucca / Karel Paardepoot en Clarabella Koe), Disney's original side characters and the original best friends of Mickey Mouse (Topolino) and Minnie.
We follows them right from their first appearances as plow horse and dairy cow in 1928 and 1929, through their modern appearances.

Ok, video's only been up an hour and already people are asking about this - so let me clear the air. A couple of days ago - before I'd started proper work on this video - I put out a poll asking whether people wanted this as one video or two seperate videos for each character. 2/3 voted for 'seperate'. After researching and writing this piece as two seperates... I instead decided upon a combined video. Here's why: Polls aren't always going to be the be all and end all - they're not to decide a 'public vote', but to give me a good idea of what the audience is thinking. They help me gauge audience interest and help me learn about viewing patterns and behaviours. But at the end of the day - as the creator, it's simply my job to take that information on board and then make the best decision for the particular video and story I am trying to tell. As I said in my video - Horace and Clarabelle are great characters in their own right, but their story is so in intimately intertwined that it needed to be told as one. This is something that I only learned once I started researching and writing. Sometimes... most of the time... the video takes shape as you're writing or creating, not before. And as you're writing things change constantly. As I mentioned, I'd started writing this as two seperate pieces. If I'd told this story in two seperate videos, they would almost be the exact same video with a few differences. In the past, people have been annoyed when I so much as repeat the same line in multiple videos, I couldn't imagine how they'd be if I uploaded two of the same video with a few differences here and there. Also, combining these characters means I can get onto MORE characters even quicker, without mucking around making two identical videos. Hope you understand and thanks for watching!

People are annoyed when you repeat the same line? They must really hate this series then. Not a criticism in any way but pretty much every video does end up covering exact same animation journey. Rough version > Finalised look black and white pipe animation > rounder colour stretch animation > end of the classic cartoons > one off specials starting in the late 80’s > 90 and 00’s tv shows > modern flash cartoons. It’s how often the characters were used and how their portrayel changed over time that makes each video different.

@@TheRealProcyon Both of them appeared in most European Disney comics. They weren't as popular as the regular characters but still appeared regularly and had colorful personalities. The Horace I remember was sort of a smarter, more sarcastic Goofy who is intermittently adept in situations while being played for a fool by being too certain of himself.

(My theory is) Clarabelle is cheating on Horace with Goofy, the reason that they disappeared was because clarabelle felt awkward around Horace’s friends because they all hated her for cheating on him. So she spent time away from them, Horace stopped seeing his friends because they all had successful relationships (Mickey and Minnie, Donald and daisy) and so he also stopped seeing them. Years later after neither was friends with them anymore they met up again and started dating. But clarabelle left him for goofy. Torn between them she dated one at a time (on again off again) and made friends with Minnie and daisy again

I remember as a kid, being curious as to who these background characters were. But back in the early 1990s, you didn't have much to go on. They were in childhood books of mine. But it seems that these characters typically only get used if it is necessary to use a lot of characters at once. But they seem to be the go to characters if extra roles need to be fulfilled in a cartoon.

As a swede, I keep forgetting that these characters are forgotten. Since I grew up with both of them through european comics, I've always considered them as relevant and going strong as the rest of the main gang. Then, when i played Epic Mickey for example, it felt weird to see them banished to the Cartoon Wasteland among the others from the rubber hose days.

It's so weird to hear that for American audiences, Horace and Clarabelle basically didn't exist for several decades, because to this day they're still regulars in European comics. Also, in the European comics, Clarabelle is full on dating Horace and there is no romance with Goofy whatsoever, which in my opinion is a good thing.

As a little kid I used to like the idea of Goofy and Clarabelle being together mostly because of "Mickey, Donald, Goofy: The Three Musketeers," but have since then become indifferent towards the couple. I do think her being with Horace make more sense.

In the Dutch comics they live together, but I'm not sure if they are actually married or just engaged. Also, Horace is a mechanic in those comics and his garage is often featured. But this was a nice video and I'm happy you did those two

One of the funniest thing of DuckTales 2017 for me was the reaction of American audience to Fethry Duck. Like... who the hell was it??? Meanwhile, in European Disney comics, he became one of the most recognizable family members of the Duck clan. 😂😂😂

That is, they're more like something a mother or grandmother would buy their very-young child if they've been good, while the very-young child wouldn't exactly follow the story or be disappointed that it wasn't Spider-Man. Most of them just think of Mickey, Donald and Goofy. GRANTED, there *are* teen and adult collectors of Donald Duck comics who do appreciate the stories and history, but it's just kind of not as strong in numbers as in Europe.

I really enjoyed your video a lot! I watched every single Mickey Mouse short from 1928-1995 on the Walt Disney Treasures DVD sets in order, and I also noticed that both Horace and Clarabelle's appearances really started to become a lot less frequent around the time we get to the shorts in Technicolor. While it is sad that they aren't as common in the Mickey Mouse series nowadays, it is interesting that they sometimes appear as walk around characters at Disneyland and Walt Disney World. Clarabelle cow is just one of those people who likes to play around with two different people, dating back-and-forth while keeping relationships from either one separate. Meaning she likes to be with either goofy or Horace, one or separately the other whenever she wishes.

Great video. Clarabelle has been my FAV character forever never replaced her with another character she was my first favorite character and still is. Sad her yellow suit has been removed but I love her Disney Parks suit!

Yes! Clara Cluck is great. It was a shame she didn't show up in Epic Mickey. That and I heard she and Panchito dated in some Disney comics and that just sounds like it is too funny to not see brought up.

I think if they brought back Horace, clarabelle, and Clara that goofy should be Clara’s love interest. Goofy was created to replace Horace, he stole his best friend and girlfriend (not cool dippy, not cool) and daisy replaced Clara. With both clarabelle, and Donald (Clara and goofys love interests) dating other people, that would leave them as the only members of the group with no love interest

I really appreciate you making this video. Horace was always a favorite of my mine since he didn’t seem to get much emphasis or attention. Clarabelle I feel still gets plenty of attention. But I like to root for the underdog so I support Horace all the way. And if Maximum Horsepower was made I know for a fact I would’ve loved it as a kid:)

I know it's not going to happen, but "Maximum Horse Power" could be a really fun episode of Ducktales 2017. A show that loves drawing from the Disney Afternoon's history, diving into a lost piece of it's history could be even more fun. Maybe earn Horace some new fans with a cool premise for his whereabouts that got cut sadly short.

I never felt that Clarabelle ever went truly dormant. While not used as much as Minnie or Daisy, still as the third lady in command, she has had much more prominence and importance in the Disney universe. I know she's definitely featured in a lot more park stuff, she was in practically every episode of House of Mouse, and I just always heard her name more. Horace is one that I completely had no idea about for a long time. Even though I saw him on House of Mouse, I didn't know what or who he was and just had always assumed that he was created just for that show. It wasn't until I really got into Disney history that i learned about him. Since his fame went way down, in the Mickey Mouse/Disney universe, there are so many guys that would take the leading role before Horace. In fact, they didn't even give him a birthday outfit in the parks for Mickey and Minnie's celebration. I really hope that these two, Horace in particular, get more screen time. Maybe throw in Clara Cluck while they're at it.
