What is truly amazing about Japan's Shinkansen is not the technology of the trains, but the number of trains in operation. At the most frequent times, there are more than 10 trains departing from Tokyo Station within an hour on the same line. As a Japanese, I am amazed at the fact that the Shinkansen operates with such a large number of trains without any accidents and almost no delays, and I have a lot of respect for the people involved in the operation.

Now during rush hour for Tohoku, Joetsu and Hokuriku Shinkansen at Tokyo station, they schedule departures for every 4 minutes meaning there is either a train leaving or coming in every 2 minutes. Something worth noting is that the Shinkansen shown from 13:09 to 13:20 isn't actually an E5, but rather one of the four very similar H5 sets. The main difference between the two types is that the H5 has improved heating equipment, extra protection for electronics and other measures to combat the colder conditions along the Hokkaido Shinkansen lines. The main way to tell them apart at a glance is the stripe between the green and white. On the E5 the stripe is pink, whereas on the H5 it's purple.

@@rexracer2852 Depends on what you mean by "better". The E5/H5 series has a higher top speed and is the newer model but the Tohoku Shinkansen has a much lower load and was built later than the Tokaido Shinkansen so that effects how fast the trains can go. Interesting thing about the 0 series: The first 0 series were replaced by newer 0 series in the 80s since JNR did not have the money to design a completely new rolling stock. No trainsets ran for the entire period from 1964 to 2008. The Tōkaidō 0 series retired in 1999.

@@PrograError There are many variations of the 0 series and as time went on Central and West even started to combine different model 0 series cars to create new sets with designations like 0+1000 witch means some parts of an original 0 series set, mated to newly manufactured series 0-1000 cars to form a set that would have the formation classification of “NH”. 0 series is a slippery slope of model designations, formation numbers, and some sets are even one off unique formations that no others have. The last 0 series that were running where designated 0-7000 series which operated Kodama service on the Sanyo Shinkansen. Toward the end they wore a grey and green livery called “fresh green” but later on the remainder were repainted in the old JNR colors before there retirement in 2008.

Well, then there are lots to mention. The CRH2A is not too different from E2, while CRH2C just with just slightly more technological domestication to raise the speed to 300km/h. AFAIK the mainland Chinese authorities also wanted the 700/800 series initially but the NipSha doesn't export technologies, thus Beijing instead chose Kawasaki. It worth mentioning that although high-speed trains has been evolved very fast (2C&3C, 380ABCD, CR400ABF) in mainland China, higher-speed train no so, thus 2A has kept domaninant the 200km/h orders for 10 years until two years ago CR300AF/BF enters the service. Neither the development of CRH3A nor older CRH1&CRH5 managed to shake 2A's market dominance.

I live in Nagano, the Joetsu Shinkansen was newly opened for the 1998 olympics with the E2 train. Special interior features included luggage storage for skis and snowboards, and the trains were all-wheel drive (first in the world at the time I believe) to allow for the steep grades and possibility of ice and snow on the run through the mountains. It's also why the speed is limited on that particular route. The E2's on that line were 100% replaced by the E7 when the line was extended out to Kanazawa.

Not sure what type of Eurostar you mean but it might be quite unfair: the older Eurostars (Class 373) derived from the TGV have two power cars (literally permanently coupled locomotives) like the TGV and ICE 1/2 (these have power cars with 4.8 MW each), 373 has around 6 MW each and these 12 MW (deployed onto 12 axles, so 1 MW per axle) have to move up to 815 tons. On the other hand all Shinkansen series including your N700A have distributed traction, so no power cars, much more axles/bogies haves motors (and only around 300 kW) the particular N700s have in summary up to 16 Megawatts. If you want to fairly compare them you have to do with the newer Eurostar 320/Class 374 from the Siemens Velaro family (ICE 3) that also has distributed traction and 16 MW.

This is the best video detailing the rolling stock of the Shinkansen series. I personally like the 0 Series the best. Their classic “bullet nose” really stands out to me, and is undoubtedly one of the most famous icons of the Japanese. That said, there’s a few thing I’d like to mention. First off, there are variants of 200 Series with the 100 Series nose instead of the “bullet nose”. Secondly, a variant of the 700 Series, the 700-7000, also known as Rail Star, remains in service with JR West. The variant has a different livery from the JR East version in having grey and yellow bands. Thirdly, I’d like to mention that there were even earlier experimental units, such as the Type 1000 and WIN350, as well as older “Doctor Yellows” derived from the 0 Series . There were all withdrawn of course. Put aside those stuffs, this is a very good video! Hope to see more of your content.

4. Additionally, the N700 series are limited to 260 km/h in Kyushu, the same speed as the 800 series. They only operate at 300 km/h in the San'yo Shinkansen. 5. With the E4 series now retired, the Joetsu Shinkansen speed has been raised to 275 km/h. 6. The Hokuriku Shinkansen's top speed of 260 km/h is limited by the steep grades due to a vast majority of the route going through mountainous terrain. 7. E5/H5 routing north of Aomori to Hakodate in Hokkaido had been left out in the video completely. 8. Nishi-Kyushu Shinkansen has been introduced in 2022 September with N700S rolling stock in a white over red paint scheme and a large black spot surrounding the cockpit window. The top speed is 260 km/h.

@@iPlayOnSpica slight correction for 6: The top speed is 260 because it is required by law, as it is part of the shinkansen basic plan. Kyushu, Nishi Kyushu, Hokuriku and Hokaido are all built under this framework. This is no coincidence that their top speed are all 260.

@iPlayOnSpica Жыл бұрын
@@sbeve7445 While I understand where they've come up with the 260 km/h limit, I wanted to also convey the geographical justification for Hokuriku's speed limit specifically. It is one of the longer routes, after all, comparable to Tokaido and San'yo, so people would wonder why the trains don't go faster there. Speaking of Tokaido, its 285 km/h limit is caused by the curves due to it being the oldest route passing through myriad coastal cities of central Japan rather than opting for a straighter mountainous route between Tokyo, Nagoya, and Osaka. There's not much incentive to raise the speed limit there because of the construction of the Chuo maglev shinkansen.

I second what @route55qatar said, your videos are well researched and quite accurate, thank you for your videos. As I write from my residence in Japan, I wanted to point out two pieces of information. Yes, the 500-series trains ran on the Tokaido track to Tokyo but were not JR Central (Tokai/Tokaido-sen) trains. The 500-series trains belong to JRWest Sanyo Shinkansen. While I am sure Railways Explained has explained this in previous videos I will quickly explain again. When JNR (Japan National Rail) broke up, it created several companies. Each company received a local train network and a Shinkansen line. As the video showed, south of Tokyo there were two segments, those segments are connected which allow passengers to hop on a shinkansen in Tokyo and disembark in Hakata w/o needing to transfer. Trains departing Tokyo station and ending at Shin-Osaka are JR Tokai trains. Trains departing Tokyo and bound for points beyond Shin-Osaka are usually Sanyo Shinkansen (JR West) trains. JR West buys access on the JR Tokai Shinkansen line to get their rail passengers to and from Tokyo. That is why one would observe a 500-series train on JR Tokai's rail bound for or depart from Tokyo Station but it was not a JR Tokyo train. As the video said, it's no longer used on the JR Tokai section anymore however, JR West's N700 still trains are. While JR Tokai and JR East terminals are Tokyo Station, their tracks are separate and do not cross at any point, so travelling between JR Tokai and JR East Shinkansens require a transfer at Tokyo Station. Each company has their own train R&D Technology divisions (except, JR West and JR Hokkaido...they are the poorest of the JR companies) and they design their own trains and systems as well as export the technology and construct Shinkansen systems overseas. JR Tokai is the most successful, as you see they bid for & won the TX project, bid for the California project but lost out, built the Taiwan system and are building the mega-lev central line in Japan on their own w/o the government's assistance. JR East has begun to step up in recent years but I am unaware of any projects outside of Japan. The recently listed JR Kyushu is quite famous in Japan for their local commuter train designs (would love to see a video highlighting their rolling stock). Their Shinkansen looks rather basic on the outside but the interior is quite famous for being made with local wood from Kyushu forest. Final point, there is perhaps a reason for JR East and JR West (Sanyo) to jointly design and build rolling stock. The next segment of the Nagano, Kanazawa Shinkansen is scheduled to open up in a year or two and connect to Fukui before completing a circuit ending at Shin-Osaka. This will allow JR East to get its trains to Osaka w/o being connected to JR Tokai.

The "Series 600" trains are missing from the three-digit series that started with Series 0. The reason for this is that Series E1 was positioned as Series 600 in the design stage. Also, since there were no other series in the Shinkansen until the Series 100 debuted, the Series 0 was simply called "Shinkansen cars".

Fun fact: The prototype 0 series train was called the 1000 series from the start tho! It ran from 1962 and was converted to the 992 series after the introduction of the Tokaido Shinkansen

The dimension of 500 series is slightly smaller, so the seats capacity also reduced. That's why JR Central stopped allowing the 500 series on the Tokaido Shinkansen. but in my opinion, 500 series has the most unique body design because of its cylindrical shape. It stands out between other JR Central-West boring-shaped shinkansen trains...
@popozz
@popozz 3 жыл бұрын
No, the seating capacity of the 500 series is being one more than the 700 and N700 series. (500 Series 1,324 seats, 700 & N700 Series 1,323 seats) The reason why the 500 series was disliked by JR Tokai is because there is only one door in cars 1 and 16, which takes time to get on and off and causes delays. Also, it is expensive to manufacture, there is no need to go 300km/h on the Tokaido Shinkansen section, and they wanted all the cars to be common.

The few 200 series that were fitted for 275km/h operation reached their speeds by rolling downhill by gravity in a tunnel in order to compete with the TGV’s speed. Btw the E4 series will make its final run on October 17th Also the Genbi shinkansen retired last December

If I may add a little, at 12:50, the E5 Series Shinkansen (green body with pink lines) owned by JR East will appear. And at 13:12, the H5 Series Shinkansen (lavender colored line) owned by JR Hokkaido appears. There is no big difference on the outside, but the interior is different. I'd like to see the video you introduce when the linear Shinkansen from Tokyo to Nagoya appears, I'm looking forward to it!

Thanks for another informative and entertaining video - and I was really happy to see the Genbi Shinkansen, as it is a favourite of mine. Each car has a unique interior as well as exterior - like a series of art galleries really. In terms of standard Shinkansen types, although the N700 trains are awesome and I am yet to get back to Japan to try the new N700S...I prefer the types that JR East run - simply because of the variety they offer in terms of styling and livery. I think JR Central and JR West could try getting a bit mroe creative :)

Just to add something: The 200 Series' 275km/h should be only for the tunnel parts going towards Niigata of the Joetsu Shinkansen, and there was a 200-2000 which looked almost identical to the 100 Series, with double decker cars too and (I think?) 245km/h.

Also Alfa-X has recently reached higher speeds than 382 km/h. E7/W7 Sets are not able to reach 320 km/h (text mistake) either they have a design speed of 275 km/h

"Also Alfa-X has recently reached higher speeds than 382 km/h." It's not even a more recent thing. The 382 km/h figure appears in headlines because that was the speed reached when members of the media were invited aboard. Those articles mention in their bodies that 400 km/h had already been achieved prior to that media run.

Although it's 3 years since you first comment this, thanks for letting me know that the E7/W7 was the rolling stock offered for Malaysia-Singapore HSR. As i've been interested into Shinkansen in the last few months, i was curious which shinkansen were they'll be used if JR East stayed in participating the project. Personally, i do love the idea of E7/W7 being used on Malaysia-Singapore HSR, but i also would love if E5/H5 were used on that route (N700A/S would be the nice third option, but probably the least interested out of three, imo). With that being said, the recent news may suggested that the project will probably use European or Chinese HSR if proceed. Which is alright as long as it does its job, but it's a bit shame as i love shinkansen for HSR. At least i could only dream that the local HSR line uses E7/W7 or E5/H5 for the services.
