Olá!! Thank you for watching my Evolution of José! I'm aware my pronunciation of some things may be a little off in this video. Firstly, it's difficult for most English speakers who are not fluent in another language to struggle with pronunciation - add on top of that my strong Australian accent, which makes it twice as hard. I've done my absolute best to pronounce everything as best as I possibly can, and have turned to the original films to help me along the way. In some cases, I understand the films may be incorrect too (funnily enough, in early films he pronounces his name Jo-se, in later shows he pronounces it Ho-Say. Though I understand the correct pronunciation in Portuguese is Jo-Se). I've done this video out of love for this beautiful culture and character and wish to do nothing but show respect and admiration. I didn't tackle this one lightly, as I wanted to do it complete justice. I hope I've done an okay job and you all enjoy the video!!

I'm not the who gets super upset on how people pronounce foreign words, one of the biggest barriers of people learning new languages is people mocking or harassing you for incorrectly pronouncing words. Pronunciation is important, but as long as your trying your best that's what matters. I know this because I have a speech impediment and stutter so it's kinda hard for me to say a lot of the words the "Correct way." Obrigado!

In Portuguese, the letter "s" when in the middle of a word assumes the sound of "z", as in "Brasil". When the word needs the sound of truly "s" used "ss", as in "pássaro" (bird). "José" is read "Jozé", so the diminutive is written "Zé", otherwise it would sound like "Sé".

Dessert... had two S but it sounds like Z. Many native speakers wrongly pronounce like S. Ps: even with a Z sound, it doesn't sound like desert, because of different stressed syllables. A fun thing about him: his original Voice Actor, José Oliveira, was from São Paulo. NOT from Rio. There is also the case of a forgotten Disney character, Fethry Duck, who is more popular in Brazil than in his homeland, in the USA. In Brazil Fethry Duck is called "Peninha" and has had his own comic book for years. His height of popularity was in the 70s, where his sloppy manner found echo in hippie culture. Interestingly, Fethry Duck originally satirized Beatnik culture.

José "Zé" Carioca is without a doubt the most beloved Disney character in Brazil. In comic books produced in Brazil (Editora Abril) from the 60s to the 90s, Zé Carioca is portrayed as a friendly and good rogue, who lives in a neighborhood in Rio de Janeiro called Vila Xurupita. He has a girfriend called Rosinha, and his best friends are Nestor,Pedrão and Afonsinho. His father-in-law is the fearsome Mr Rocha Vaz.José loves soccer, samba and feijoada,(black beans stu). And based on this argument, several comic books were published in Brazil with great humor and success. And by the way,on some of these brazilian comic books, there was a Carioca's version of him as a Super Hero called "Morcego Verde'(Green Bat),inspired on Batman.

Zé Carioca was named after José Carlos Brito da Cunha, an incredibly popular cartunist and illustrator from Rio de Janeiro (his artwork is considered the poster image of Rio's art deco era) who signed as J.Carlos. Disney was so impressed with his art that he offered Carlos a job in his studio, but the artist declined it in order to continue working here and staying with his family. That said, your video is incredible (as usual). I loved reading Zé's comics during the 90's and it amazes me how on point Los Tres Caballeros and Saludos Amigos are when it comes to some aspects of Samba as a rhytm. They managed to be less stereotypical than a lot of official turistic material made by our government during the years.

Something ironic about his surname is that it means native of Rio de Janeiro, but his original VA was and had an accent from São Paulo. And every other VA after him who speaks in Portuguese had a "Paulista" accent too. In fact, I think Marco Antônio was the first and so far only José was voiced with a real Carioca accent.

The character is certainly a lot more recognizable to Arabic speaking viewers like myself than he is in the US as the Three Caballeros feature was quite popular in that region like here in Egypt to the point that for a period of time Egyptian Channel 2 used to show some of the musical segments from the feature in between different programs airing on the channel during the 90s and the comic strip where he was the main character was widely published in the Arabic translated Disney digest books at the time.

We italians were very lucky to have the possibility to read Jose Carioca's stories inside of the disney magazine "Mega Almanacco" throughout the 80s and 90s and even further. In Italy is character was actually popular and I didn't knew that people in the US never saw his evolution over the years
@micycles12005 жыл бұрын
Even though I actually haven't seen Saludos Amigos or Three Caballeros, I enjoy Jose. Of course, Panchito shouldn't be kept out either, so I'll include him in this too. The first time I ever saw Panchito or Jose was in the Soundsational Parade at Disneyland. I remember thinking to myself "what the hell are those things?" I was really confused as to why 1) these two random bird characters were just in Disneyland, and 2) why they were featured alongside Donald in a Latin-American themed segment. To me, not only did Jose and Panchito look out of place at the park, but Donald - the All American, red white and blue blooded, US Navy veteran, duck - did not look right amongst them, especially in a sombrero. Eventually I learned that these two were, in fact, Disney characters who came from these movies and starred alongside Donald Duck. Once I learned that, I really started to enjoy seeing them pop up. I love when Disney acknowledges classic characters. Not just classic movie characters, but classic Mickey Mouse Universe characters. Even though Panchito and Jose were never in any classic shorts, they're definitely canon in the Mickey universe. I wish we could see more of them, and more of other characters, Horace Horsecollar, Clara Cluck, Pete, Ludwig Von Drake, Scrooge McDuck, Mortie and Ferdie, Max, or even Oswald. But even just Jose and Panchito getting their time in the sun is awesome. Given the huge Latino comminuty over here in the Southern California area, I'm glad that we see them in events at Disneyland throughout the year. I really hope now that the Soundsational Parade is over, and Magic Happens debuts with its Coco float, that Disneyland doesn't completely give up on Jose and Panchito as the Latino representation to focus solely on Coco. Not because I don't like Coco or don't think it shouldn't be represented, but because it would be incredibly short-sided to do so. Coco focuses on a pretty Mexican-only thing. Jose and Panchito focus on all Latin-American people. Panchito, even though he's from Mexico, is allowed to blend in with other cultures and other countries because his focus is not on just Mexico. Also, Jose is Brazilian. He speaks Portugese. To lump all the Latino stuff in with Coco really screws over the Brazilians for that reason, and again, doesn't offer much for other countries besides Mexico. Anyways, that went a little off-topic, but I hope that someone at Disney or someone who can speak directly to Disney is listening because we still do love those two characters out here. Anyways, Jose, I'm glad your spotlight is beginning to shine again. Hopefully with the 3 Caballero series finally coming to the American market, we will only see your popularity grow.

Jose is a pretty cool guy. I honestly didn't knew he wasn't as popular here as he was in Brazil.

"The name Carioca is for the word given to the natives and culture of Brazil" (4.08). Well, you got this wrong. Carioca is the traditional name given to the natives of Río de Janeiro. In José Carioca´s first appearance, in "Saludos, Amigos", he is very proud of Río and its culture, in a very specific way. Only until the following year, with "The Three Caballeros", José began to be shown as more representative of Brazil in general, and not so specifically of Río. By the way, I had always seen José Carioca in his classic outfit as an elegant and sophisticated South American gentleman, and had never seen the modern representations of him with the shirt and baseball cap thrown back as a vulgar teenager. How awful!

Hey! These are neat videos! I’d like to add that in 1980 the Dutch Donald Duck weekly started publishing the old newpaper comics drawn by Paul Murry, and in the years that followed the Netherlands started producing its own stories with the character. They are generally written in the Netherlands and the drawing is usually outsourced to Spanish artists, though sometimes they are drawn within the Netherlands as well. So with him appearing maybe every other month or so it’s nothing compared with Brazil (over 2000 stories, with over 200 in the Netherlands), but he does continue to appear to this day. It is worth noting that the Dutch comics are really basedon the old newspaper run rather than any of the animated or modern appearances, so hestill has the character traits and look of that version. And of course, here’s hoping that The Legend of the Three Caballeros will get more seasons as it was originally intended... Another note: The images of the early incarnations of the characters in your video thumbnails for both Donald and José are actually fan drawings I did a few years ago... but I did try to capture that classic look!

It's surprising that Disney doesn't have more regional characters for different countries considering the huge success of José Carioca in Latin America. Sesame Street did it, with different countries having their own characters alongside the international known muppets.

Disney+ should make educational series using all these classic characters: A Spanish language learning series staring Jose Carioca and Panchito Pistoles. A travel/culture series narrated by Jiminy Cricket. A music learning series taught by Professor Owl. A history series taught by Knowsmore. A science series taught by Ludwig Von Drake. A wildlife series narrated by Kangaroomouse Jake.

Pls dont toss Zé on a spanish speaking series, even as a joke... it's already bad that they have ONE character for the whole of spanish-speaking central/south america. Dont do my son Zé like that... it's so easy to lump us down south in one big bundle and it's rather upsetting. I bet people from different USA states wouldnt like that we see them as pretty much one blob of people without defining characteristics, which yea, we do (but usa is a country and we're several so).

Awesome video! I'll readily admit Zé Carioca is not my favourite character, but I always thought he was full of personality and love his design. I like especially how he has flexible morals to put it nicely, like that friend you know deep down has a good heart, but you shouldn't trust him 100% of the time hahahaha Of course, I think most people in Brazil know who he is, but I'd still say the main Disney characters like Mickey, Donald, Goofy, Minnie, Daisy, etc... are way more popular. I remember Disney comic books being somewhat popular, but as a kid they were significantly overshadowed by the Turma da Mônica comic series which, to be fair, has had an almost practical monopoly in comic books to this day due to their immense neverending popularity Not to dimish on the parrot's popularity though, it clearly has a lot of love by seeing the other comments. I just wanted to put into context where he sits popularity wise in Brazil. Now I wonder if my small nephews know him as he did fade into obscurity more and more as time passed, it's a shame since he's honestly a really great character. I think the problem might be that Disney limits him too much by making him a Brazilian stereotype, I think his popularity in Brazil kept on for far longer mainly because he gets to be a regular character over there, but in the US he's always "that Brazilian character"

This is it. Probably won't do Max, as he doesn't have much history, many appearances or much of an 'evolution' to cover.

Dave Lee Down Under I would argue he kinda does. The fact that Goofy JR existed in the old shorts, each of his major appearances had him grow up each time, kid, teen, young adult, and how his personality and relationship with goofy changed But I understand and respect your decision (hopefully he appears in the new Ducktales since Goofy is confirmed)
