Fun fact: Sally the Witch, the very first magical girl anime ever, was inspired by the western sitcom Bewitched, which is very popular in Japan and received some remakes there, such as the anime Okusama wa Majo. Thus making a western work being a major inspiration on the entire genre

I grew up on sailor moon before I really understood what anime was. I met a friend who liked anime and I was trying to relate to her so I said I liked sailor moon and she just replied, "you know there are more, right?" My response was mind blown. There were MORE? I fell deep into everything magical girl along with all the other anime I picked up along the way. This whole video is really nostalgic :) what a beautiful compilation and I'm excited to watch the ones here that I have yet to.

Ya know? Even if you have no interest in the genre, there's something weirdly fascinating about watching this just because of the TIME changes involved. Like, seeing how the animation/drawing style changes, and the clothes and hairstyles on the characters, and how the theme songs update to the most popular style of the time (anybody notice how DISCO the 1978 one suddenly sounded?!), and when certain visual tropes/gags started coming in... Of course, I was also waiting for Sailor Moon specifically 'cos that's not only my first Magical Girl anime, but my (official) gateway series to anime as a whole. (I say "officially" 'cos there was a LOT of heavily anime-influenced/technically a western cartoon but drawn in Japan stuff among the '80s Saturday Morning shows I watched as a little kid.) But I found this whole video interesting in general. Like, just from an animation and music buff alone, never mind the other stuff. And if you ARE a Magical Girl conoussieur it'd be even better! But even if you're not--just seeing how this aspect of pop culture morphs and evolves over the years, what comes in when, etc. is just fascinating. :)

As the Precure seasons got closer together, the magical girl anime started producing less and less. It’s pretty weird how in the 2000s magical girls were a defining part of anime, and now all of them are known as edgy and disregarded. Precure is one of the few franchises that still is going on strong.

A lot of that can be blamed on Madoka Magica (not a slam on it, though). In a lot of ways, you can make the comparison of Madoka Magica to a western product; Watchmen. Both of them completely flipped the tropes of their respective genres (magical girl anime for Madoka Magica and superhero comics for Watchmen) on their heads and became inspirational in their own right... but the copycats COMPLETELY miss the point of what made the originals such beloved classics (like, you know... great writing). Which is how you you get stuff like 90's Image Comics as well as things like Magical Girl Site.

I've noticed that the anime art style had changed in the 90's and most of the old animes songs have similar music tones. Aside from Sailor Moon and Card Captor Sakura, I love Magic Knight Rayearth (12:19), Ojamajo Doremi (18:14), Petite Princess Yucie (24:00), Mai-HIME (28:19), Gakuen Alice (29:42), Onegai My Melody (30:46), Demashita! Powerpuff Girls Z (34:37), The World God Only Knows (47:05), Mahou Shoujo Lalabel (4:24) and Pichi pichi Pitch. Lalabel looks a lot like Charlotte (Wakakusa no Charlotte) I really thought it's Miku for a second in Mahou Shoujo Pretty Sammy at 13:12 Thank you VirgoX Flow for your effort in compiling these anime into a one video I appreciated it. It takes me back at my childhood days. Sorry for my long comment I'm just happy that's why. :)

my experience with Magical Girl Anime: First watched: Minky Momo What made me a fan: Symphogear Series Current Favorite: -Symphogear Series -Yuusha de aru Series -Nanoha Series -Madoka -Revue Starlight(?) anyway, the when I saw Utena shows up, I thought Shoujo Kageki Revue Starlight's gonna show up in the video as well since some people kinda "similiarized" it with Utena (I myself haven't seen Utena tho so dunno what is it about), but it turns out it didn't show up. Is it because it's not "magical" enough?
