Between 89 and 92 for me. I did see them once in 94 and James sounded like he did in 92... which was great. Unfortunately I haven't been able to find the 94 Cleveland OH at Blossom concert anywhere on KZbin.

The thing you can notice is how much tighter they became by 1987 to 1999. By 2003, Cocaine addiction combined by his injuries by Lars shows its limits ( not just lack of practice ) all over the place. 2006 is pretty good and inspired. 2007 is okay just James voice tired. But you can't blame any singer for that 2008, pretty solid, when Lars stopped cocaine.. 2009 - 2010 : sounds off, despite a couple of cool fills in 2009. 2011, sounds good.. 2012 , a bit rushed but not bad. 2013 , same , james hitting the hit note of chorus again. 2014, pretty good 2015, pretty consistent 2016 : Same , James voice not very stable off night support wise in begining but good after 2017: Rushed and burn out .. 2018 : pretty solid becoming better again . 2019: progressing again in the right direction , cool fills . 2020 : same 2021: same even James voice a bit goaty but ... Voice is fragile on tour, hours delay, relapse , travelling... 2022 :back in a more professional level from a long time , James voice regaining a bit of thickness.

I thought he had stopped going up on "blinded by me" from the late 90s on and only recently brought the original vocal line back. It was interesting to see he changed the line off and on all throughout the years. Fun to hear the tempo dip in the 90s into the early 2000s only to hear it go back up in the last decade. It did seem like they were kind of coasting at one point, but around Death Magnetic, it's like they started giving a shit again.

How are people saying his voice died in 94? Load/reload album are his best vocals. Still has the raspiness but has the maturity and depth to his voice. S&M 99 is an amazing live performance.
