I just realized, in BOTW, pulling the Master Sword out isn't just a story element, it's an actual test of courage for the player. As you hold down the A button, you watch your health get drained, your first instinct is to let go of the button. You don't just get it for free in a cutscene, you have to EARN it. You have to show your commitment and courage in the face of danger, and hold that button down to the last sliver of the last heart to prove you deserve the sword. That's what we call fucking good game design, kids.

Here's what I think how each cutscene presents the Master Sword based on how the sword works in each game and based its story in each game and its appearance on how Nintendo sees it. A Link to the Past - Its discovery Ocarina of Time - Its legacy and purpose (a.k.a. the game where it became iconic to the series) Wind Waker - Its restoration and death Twilight Princess - Its need in times of darkness Skyward Sword - Its origin story A Link Between Worlds - Its nostalgia? (Don't know, haven't played this game, don't know what its story is.) Hyrule Warriors - Its power and flaw (it has a few flaws in the game that are apparent to gameplay and story, no spoilers though. Figure it out on your own time.) Breath of the Wild - Its worth

Going to leave like a "spoiler tag" for anybody that, even though it's been a month after release, doesn't want to be spoiled on in-game elements (contrary to if you read *other* comments) like the Master Sword because I've got some input on Breath of the Wild's Master Sword and _why_ it is what it currently is in the game. So yeah, the Master Sword "breaks" in the game. It has a base power/strength of 30, but will double to 60 in the presence of Ganon's Malice (i.e. pools of Malice, Guardians, inside Divine Beasts). I like to call it the "evil detector," or "Link's hero senses." But unfortunately the sword _will_ "break" (it "loses power") after some use. It seems like it has better durability when it's powered up in the presence of Malice, but even then it can still break at some point so it's best not to use it unless it's really necessary. It takes 10 minutes in real, *unpaused* time for it to recharge back to it's full durability. But why does it *break*?? Well, you'd have to understand the whole premise of this game during the development process. Nintendo really wanted to change the formula up to making one *GIANT* world instead of places that were basically giant rooms that would fade to white/black every time you entered a new area and the game needed to load in all the assets. They also pushed for this survival element where Link needed to forage to survive, getting/cooking food for hearts, materials and spoils for rupees, and weapons for self-defense. So let's focus on the weapons. All weapons have durability. Fully durability in the game is signified with a little gold sparkle in the upper right-hand corner of their picture in the menus. No sparkle means it's been used to strike something _at least_ once. Red and flashing means it's badly damaged. And when a weapon breaks, it's gone. But for the Master Sword, it's just a slot with a zero-power sword. In case you don't know, pulling the Master Sword makes a new slot for itself among your melee weapons. So the reason why the Master Sword "breaks" is most likely due to a universal algorithm used for all weapons, shields, and bows for when their individual values for durability reaches zero, the item breaks. But the Master Sword has a special case where it doesn't disappear when it breaks and instead is just pretty much a useless placeholder until the sword is of use again. The developers did not want to make the Master Sword unbreakable because it would undermine the utility of the other melee items found in the game; even though 30 power isn't the best, it would be a decent one-handed weapon to use if it had infinite durability and thus would undermine most other one-handed weapons. A personal theory of mine is that they wanted to implement the Master Sword to enter a still-usable, but very weak in power, state rather than have it break; the Master Sword would drop to a power within the single digits while it waited to recharge. But then the problem with this would be that the "universal algorithm" for weapon durability would conflict with this idea, i.e. the game could think the "weak Master Sword" is a brand new sword with it's own durability and thus it could break or get stuck in a loop of needing to repair should the player manage to abuse the weak Master Sword. It would have basically been too complicated to make a never-breaking Master Sword because one route would potentially undermine other melee weapons and the other route would conflict with the game's established logic. But how does the Master Sword "breaking" work in the game overall? It at least teaches the player to use everything at their disposal. It is also used to break the ever-long grip of better weapons undermining the use of other items, something that has plagued the Zelda series since day one (i.e. nobody uses the slingshot after they get the bow). Also it symbolizes the possibility of Link relying on the Master Sword too much in the past which eventually lead to his near-demise during the great Calamity. I haven't finished the game so of course I still have questions like "How did Link even get the Master Sword in the first place? Did he not undergo any trials or tribulations to earn the right to wield it? It can't be just because of fate or because of his apparent skill with the sword."
@jlinkous055 жыл бұрын
They would have done better to require players to get to the start of the second half of the game and then provide an unbreakable weapon. Same with the Hylian Shield, an unbreakable shield acquired somewhere after 2/3 of the game. There are plenty of other weapons and shields which are stronger or have better special effects. I felt really silly walking around with the Master Sword but wielding a Dragonbone Boko Spear.

i absolutely love how, in botw, nearly every musical callback is just a subtle nod to the older games, and the entire game feels kinda lonely as you traverse a broken hyrule. that is, until you pull the master sword, and link is instantly "linked" directly back to all of his predecessors, holding the same exact sword while the exact same melody plays. it feels like the one moment in the game where all of the forgotten time and heroes of the past are brought back to one moment, and in that moment link truly becomes a hero. to me it just feels like the botw version of this cutscene has so much more thematic significance than nearly any of the others, and its really an incredible moment. also, i just noticed that the master sword theme is a slowed down version of the jingle that plays when you get an important item, just given a LOT more emphasis since its such an important item to the story

My favourite was the Twilight Princess one. The wind washing away the clouds like a shockwave. And I preferred the Twilight Princess Link. He looked even more adult and bulky and handsome in that one. I couldn't bear to see the one from Skyward Sword, he was looking like fourteen or such, too young. The one from Breath of the Wild was a bit thin and teenage-looking again when half nude (even if the villagers reactions were funny and priceless). Adult Link from the remake of Ocarina of Time on 3DS came close to the handsome adult I expected, but yeah... I agree on one point though, Link is DEFINITELY a handsome guy. They created a hottie for a Hero especially with each gaming evolution. Breath of the Wild was a masterpiece. The graphics were just endlessly breathtaking me.

I love how the great deku tree mentions Fi when telling Link to respect the sword. Which brings up the question- is Fi conscious in the sword? Can she see the world around her as she waits in silence trapped in the blade? Knowing the answers and knowing she can help the hero but never having the ability to? Or is it the more disturbing possibility, that every one of the reborn spirits of the hero has had to wield the blade of ages... that carries a dead guardian? Has the weight of the master sword only increased, now that it holds the corpse of the goddess' agent?
@hylianro2 жыл бұрын
I don't think you played botw so lemme just tell you, yes fi is active (at least in this game) because her sound effect is in one of the cutscenes (either after trial of the sword or links defeat I can't remember)

A link to the past is a good one. The way they make multiple fakes and how you have to navigate a maze just to find the real one . The wind waker one is good as well and I love how time starts to flow again once link pulls out the sword from the long lost castle/ yenole of hyrulr as ots partly buried beneath the oceans deep waves . Though to be honest they are all amazing scenes and my favorite part of the franchise is when link gets to pull out the master sword.

yes it does! after 10min it will return, it is usless outside of boss fights!
@areallymeanperson7 жыл бұрын
it isn't useless outside boss battles EDIT: it's Very useful both inside and outside boss battles, because when you are near guardians or things controlled by malice (weird black red stuff) , it glows and gains 30 more damage also, it doesn't break, if it did, you wouldn't have it anymore would you? it loses power then you would have to wait 10 minutes
@mikeanthony33007 жыл бұрын
It can still lose power while powered up (when it starts to glow). It happened to me while I was in Hyrule Castle which keeps the Master Sword powered up at all times while Link is within the area.

Lilkxdude4101 Way more than that because near the beginning of BOTW it even says that 10,000 years ago another hero (probably named Link used the master sword to seal Ganon away with the help of the princess of Hyrule (probably names Zelda). So I wouldn't be surprised if the Master Sword was actually around 100,000 years old or even more for that matter.

Everyone wonders why the blade hurts or even kills those who are too weak to hold it but remember that each link who has drawn it is already a hero and is protected by the key items of power that he has claimed beforehand. Edit: it does make me wonder what happened to the mark of the triforce to this link when he died. Perhaps it lies dormant or it was simply so that we could get the proper experience
@lilkxdude56597 жыл бұрын
Why do they hold the sword in the air like that? Because of the link from SS?
@Luigi_is_7 жыл бұрын
If you got a sword like that, wouldn't you want to hold it up in the air? I would! It's a magic blade that can pierce evil, I would feel pretty powerful and want to hold it up in the air like that.
