@broadway3313 жыл бұрын
Muppets Most Wanted had some of my favorite Piggy outfits. They’re all inspired by the city she’s in. That Vivienne Westwood wedding dress? Stunning! It’s interesting that you didn’t mention that Piggy’s gotten more blonde over the years (with the exception of the brunette phase). Her 1970s hair is much more of a natural honey blonde. She tends to have more of a platinum blonde nowadays.
@tornadodee1483 жыл бұрын
this reflects Barbie and how she got blonder over the years too. Remember Miss Piggy is a sort off parody of that.

Miss Piggy’s 70s Farrah Fawcett waves will always be my favorite. Her outfits in The Muppet Movie were stunning and I loved the part she played in it. The jump from the 70s feathered wavy hair to the early 80s perm in Muppets Most Wanted was the most striking to me and the most fun.
@AikoSilver3 жыл бұрын

OMG Emmett Otter's Jug Band Christmas is weird too! Not just to see moments with a full body Kermit riding a bike, but also of Ma and Emmett Otter walking down the street showing their legs and feet and it's sooooo weird watching it because you can see they're being puppeted with marionette strings, and you'll see the legs moving and the body just floats along-- it's just, it gives me the willies! I know I keep using the word _"weird"_ , but really that's the word that just comes to mind when talking about Muppet legs! 👑🐷 I consulted on the build of Miss Piggy in pre production for The Muppets. Jason Siegel and James Bobin wanted to get the characters looking closer to their halcyon days, and Piggy in particular needed a lot of work. She’d slipped into a very preschool looking build, with cheap wigs and very unfocused, flat eyes. The eye construction was a major focus of my consultation, as well as wig placement to give her a bit more forehead. I also painted the portrait of her that’s seen at the end of Kermit’s Pictures In My Head song.

Great video! And always wonderful to see this truly iconic character getting her due✨💖✨ I consulted on the fresh build of Miss Piggy for 2011’s The Muppets, working with the production designer and director to get her looking more in line with her glory days. I also painted the prop portrait of her that Kermit gazes at in the Pictures In My Head number, and I consulted on the sculpt of the Diamond Select Piggy action figure. Needless to say, I know my stuff re La Pig, and I really appreciate well informed accounts of her legacy. Overall this was SO good, but there were some inaccuracies I’ll list below. Let me be super clear before I go into detail… I LOVE this character. She was one of my earliest childhood obsessions and remains one of my all time favourites so, as I get critical below, just know it’s all because I want Miss Piggy to shine on forever! I’m gonna go into a LOT of detail, so get ready for a full Piggy TED Talk 🐷💬 One small thing is that Moidonna isn’t pronounced “Moydonna” but is pronounced “MWAHdonna” after Piggy’s key use of the French for me: Moi. Also the pic you had on screen for that moment is her in mermaid costume which is a visual reference to Bette Midler’s mermaid look she’d worn for her own stage show since 1978. I love that you shouted out to the genius of Bonnie Erickson for designing Piggy. But it would’ve been cool if you’d mentioned illustrator and designer Michael K Frith too, who was absolutely key in designing and defining her ultra glam looks during the highest height of her popularity in the late 70s and 80s. More importantly though, Miss Piggy’s head, face and ears were never covered in Antron fleece (though her body has always been). In her earliest forms she was, as you said, hand carved from foam rubber (so roughly early on that the inside of her mouth split to reveal Richard Hunt’s hand during the Muppet Glee Club sketch!), but her peach fuzz look was always the result of flocking. The technique was simply refined and perfected over the years, and when they began sculpting her in clay to make a mold that was used to cast her in liquid foam latex, the surface became so smooth and uniform that the flocking just sat better on it, creating her iconic fuzzy but flawless complexion. I would’ve loved to see you go into more depth on her aesthetic development. I love that you talk about her evolving looks reflecting and parodying our relationship to fashion and glamour, but her look also went through the tonal and textural transformation most of The Muppets did, from deeper, heavier 70s colour schemes to lighter more vivid hues in the 80s and beyond. Her flocking and airbrushing reflect this, with her 70s look, even at its most perfected, using longer flock, stronger airbrushing and a pinker complexion, then evolving to the smoother shorter flock with less airbrushing and a more pale orange hued peachy skin tone. Her overall size has changed over the years too. Not only in terms of her level of plumpness, but her actual scale. Part of the visual humour of she and Kermit’s relationaship came from how much she dominated him in size, but she has by now been scaled down slightly to seem less imposing. This has not only diminished the optics of her comedy value but it created a problem once Eric Jacobson began performing her, that I’ll describe in more detail a few points down… Another issue has been the way her clothing went from flowing and voluminous in the 70 and 80s to more tailored and rigid in the 90s and beyond. Jim Henson would talk about how key it was for muppet characters to have what he called “secondary movement”. Think Gonzo’s feathery head tufts, Kermit’s floppy hands and Piggy’s wonderfully expressive hair and dynamically flowing clothes. There were occasions where she wore tighter outfits in the 70s and 80s, but she always had the high quality voluminous and dynamic hair to give her this secondary movement. Unfortunately for many appearances across the 90s, 2000s and beyond, she lacked movement in both her hair and costumes. A karate chop, dramatic turn or a tantrum isn’t quite the same without the swishing follow through from her wig and outfit, and the way her hair gets thrown messily over her face. On the issue of her hair, her wigs have also gone through transformations beyond just different hairstyles. They also went from gorgeous real hair wigs in the 70s and early 80s, that could be hot curled and styled professionally, to depressingly cheap shake-and-go synthetic wigs that produced these hot spots of shine under lights and barely moved, even when they were longer. I’m definitely not a fan of her flat straight hair looks, especially when the cheap wigs are too short to move at all. Thankfully she’s now mostly in higher quality wigs, though still synthetic, since that was a major change I advised for The Muppets film in 2011. Major too is the evolution (or, in my opinion, somewhat devolution) of her eye build. Your coverage of her early eyes was excellent and I’m glad you mentioned at least one of her “sat-on” moments in the late 80s/early 90s! But her eye design peaked way back in The Great Muppet Caper, and has never been as good since then. It’s had some much improved moments, but never bettered that design. There have been times when her lids have been too thinly skinned, her lash line too straight, and when her eyes have lacked any focus (getting that blank stare that Jim Henson would never have allowed because he and his builders always insisted on the slightly cross-eyed “Henson Triangle” to give the Muppets their amazingly engaging eye focus)… But the biggest problem has been that her eyelashes have been angled backwards, making her eyes look doll like and flat. In her best moments her eyelashes angled forwards, giving her eyes a sultry heavy look, and making them appear very 3D looking with an amazingly directional gaze. I insisted this be amended for The Muppets film, and it was corrected, so I’m glad to see that since 2011 her eyes have often looked better, but the Piggy puppets wear out much more often than other characters due to the foam losing elasticity and tearing along her complex stress points, and the flocking wearing off from dynamic movement, and this means that they also get rebuilt often… so the eyes are sometimes better and sometimes they slip back into the build errors I mentioned. Which brings me to a final point about her changing looks. She went through a stage between 2000 and 2010 where her head sculpts varied quite a lot, with some fuller faces, some much too small faces, as well as some lacking a forehead or having a too rectangular snout in profile. As you know during this time the franchise was in flux in terms of who owned it, so these hiccups in her build were no doubt the result of too many cooks. Most of those issues have been resolved, but I still think her head sculpt is too small overall, and the proof of this is noticeable in the way the heal of Eric Jacobson’s thumb visibly bulges in her chin area, distorting her lower face and schewing it to her left. Once you see this detail you can never unsee it! And it frustrates me as a designer because a slightly larger head sculpt, and piggy build overall, would rectify both this problem and her relative scale to Kermit. A company in New Jersey called Puppet Heap have built the Muppets for many years now, and they do a mostly great job. But, as listed above, there have been quiiiiite a few shortfalls and inconsistencies in the way the characters look, with Piggy suffering these most because her construction is one of the most complex. I often wish the brilliant Bonnie Erickson was overseeing her builds, or that the great Michael K Frith was once again designing her looks! Or that Jim was still here for quality control. But until then it’s up to us, the devoted fans and designers who grew up with these iconic characters, to help ensure they look their best. Can I just say, excellent singing, Dan! This was excellent. Miss Piggy is not only a fashionista she is also one hell of a actress! Btw, I would love to see a Distory on the White Rabbit from Alice in Wonderland.

I recently watched the original muppet show for the first time and, although most of the characters look pretty much the same, I was not prepared for how different Miss Piggy looked to how I knew her

That early 90's Piggy was really a bit of trial-and-error in terms of her evolving into new looks for a new decade. She ended up looking beautiful but, just like in the clips you've shown, there are versions of Piggy where it looks like the eyes are about to fall off lol
