The thing that makes me play all types of Sonic games is the fact it's not the same thing over and over again, unlike some other gaming characters, Sonic's final bosses are all different about 85% of the time. ( Dark Gaia, Mephlies / Solaris, etc ) It gives the games there own feeling and style to them.

Mephiles and infinite should team up. Mephiles's embodiment of darkness, and infinite's illusions would make them the perfect duo. Since darkness can lead to illusions. Sure, this would mean that solaris would have to be brought back somehow, and a second phantom ruby would need to be found, but it would be awesome to see how sega would team these 2 up if it ever happens.

1:17:06 so, gemrl used the chaos emeralds to become a huge beast of a robot (seems kind of familiar in 2 areas) but only used some of the energy of the emeralds to become that strong, so sonic was able to use the rest of the energy to become super sonic (also seems familiar) also, if i'm spelling gemrl wrong, it's only because he's a very underrated villain. He may not be as iconic as metal sonic is, but he still is one of sonic's strongest rivals, and should definitely appear in another sonic game. In fact, metal and gemrl should team up. Both are on the hunt for sonic and disobeyed eggman just to prove how strong they are. Neither can defeat sonic on their own, so perhaps if they powered up to their strongest form, and then fused, then they could stand more of a chance against sonic.
