I tried my hand at data visualization, by following the great tutorial by Cary from Abacaba and Cube Roll. Code is pretty much copy pasted from his. I didn't change much things as visual design is definitely not my forte.
So big thanks to him for this tutorial!
/ @abacaba
This video shows the top 25 songs Metallica played the most live, displaying the day by day evolution. Note that there are 126 setlists up to 1993 that are missing.
All data were scrapped from Metallica's official website.
There will be quite a few more videos using these data following up. :)
UPDATE : Here's the same video for songs from after the Black Album:
• Most played post-Black...

That's actually 590 and 900 respectively with the shows with unknown setlists that are not included in the on screen count ^^ But indeed, I've prepared a moving count of the number of shows for a 3 year period, and they peaked at about 320 shows between 1991 and 1994

That’s was a great thing though because during the 80s they were obviously more focused on writing and recording new albums. The shows were a 2nd thought. Just compare their shows during the 80s. When The Black Album came around the material dropped in quality but their shows became so tight and well performed.

What's crazy is that from the start of the Damaged Justice tour in September of '88 to the end of the Nowhere Else to Roam tour in July of '93 they played something like 550 shows. That's one show every three days for five years. Those dudes were always on the road.

Great job! Here's a few things that I find interesting: 1) Whiplash was a staple until early 00s when it was almost completely forgotten. Why? 2) Blackened was played fewer times than The Unforgiven. How is it possible? 3) Ride the Lightning and Metallica each contains three of their most played songs. Who knew that RtL would age so well? 4) Fuel was the last new song to rise to the top. 5) King Nothing is the only Load song to be played after the promotional tour was over. 6) The Memory Remains has been played more times than two songs from Master of Puppets album. That's crazy! 7) Ride the Lightning made an astonishing comeback in late 00s and early 10s.

Memory has played more than 3 MOP songs.. forgot about Orion (didn't make the chart). Also, bleeding me, outlaw torn, and until it sleeps have all been played long after the Load tour was over. Even wasting my hate a few times. And whiplash was played heavily during world magnetic and worldwired tours.

RTL is their best album in my opinion. It's the perfect mix of their youthful energy and more mature writing. The tipping point if you will. And I also think MOP is probably their best writing. Their prime. But RTL edges it in rawness.

Yeah but it's also clear that getting an early lead helps a lot, As evidenced by Seek and Destroy taking so long to be overtaken, And then Creeping Death taking so long to be overtaken by MoP, And probably the earlier songs' headstart that keeps Enter Sandman from being top of this list. I'm sure there's plenty demand for modern era songs that just gets overshadowed by the seniority of the classic albums

I can understand the logic of older songs getting a headstart but if you look at other bands like Iron Maiden, Judas Priest and Megadeth, their 15 most played songs would contain almost nothing from their 1st 3 albums or so. Its crazy that they have 8 songs played over a thousand times live. 3 almost total 5k... Seen them twice, both shows production was perfect. 1997 load tour, loudest show Id ever seen. 2018, ACL festival. Deftones had sound issues right before. Met- was crisp, clear and 💯% from first note. Top 10 live act OAT. No question.

I actually did not know that Creeping Death rose to #1 most played! It's interesting to see how so many people today reject God, but they accept a song about the Angel of Death in Exodus wiping out Egypt. (because that's what the song is about) It was also fun to see Through The Never pop in and out.

Really thought it would be Seeak & Destroy... I know they play Creeping death and Puppets at practically every gig but I figured S&D being the oldest song which is also played nearly every gig would be top.

The most amazing thing I noticed here was that they played relatively few shows early on in their career, at least compared to later tours when they were huge. At the release of KEA they had only played 36 shows, and by RTL this was up to 74 shows. I mean that’s a lot for any “local garage band” but still surprising by Metallica standards - especially considering how legendary those albums have become
@Poutrel

true but there's also 126 shows up until 1993 (mostly from the 80s) that have missing setlist, and thus are not displayed in the count in the video

From the top of my head: 5 from Load, 7 from ReLoad, ~5 from St. Anger, 5 from Lulu, 2 from Hardwired...To Self-Destruct, 6 from 72 Seasons and 1 non-album song (We Did It Again) So about 30 from a total of 146.

I figured One or Enter Sandman would be the take the top spot. I should have know Master of Puppets and Seek and Destroy would be higher. They haven't played Damage, Inc. nearly enough. The older I get, the more and more that song becomes my favorite off Master of Puppets. Probably their last true thrash song.

If I understand the chart correctly, Seek & destroy was no 1 for a very long time until creeping death overtook it in mid 90's. I am a little bit confused, isn't seek destroy a mandatory set list? If Creeping death could surpass it then there were a lot of times when Seek & Destroy was out of set list, quite many actually.

I wonder if Metallica has anything big planned for their 2000th concert. Would be awesome if they went Live on KZbin, Facebook, etc. and did like a massive 5 hour show or something. How Historic would THAT be? Do like 2 1/2 hours, then take a break of however long, then come back for another 2-3 hours. People would be talking bout it for. Long time! They are the only band to play on all 7 continents! They really should pursue this distinction of becoming the first band to play "here," or "there.". Think about it! The first band to play in space! They can do that now by taking one of those planes up into the edge of space. Or how about, the first band to play underwater? There's buildings that are underwater now, so they can do that now if they wanted. Or, the first band to play play a show at the highest altitude. There are many, MANY ideas out there! Whatever they do for their 2000th show, I'm just glad they are still rocking us fans in this very difficult world!
