In this video, I bring to you the evolution of one of the most devastating moves in Mortal Kombat. Noob's tele-slam can be very unpredictable because it is very fast and can be performed from very far distances. It has been Noob's signature move since Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 (1995) until MK11 (2019).

MKT: This is how one of my favourite moves in all of MK is born. Gameplay-wise, all versions of this move are easy to pull off and costs a good amount of damage to the opponent. In terms of presentation, Noob gets sent upwards, fitting for his select screen pose, leaves behind him a black shadowy trail making him look like he is slowly crawling upwards, which gives off a bit of a creepy feeling, and he surproses from behind, drags you to Hell with him and reappears using physics to inflict damage on you. This great for 2 reasons. 1) It catches you off-guard. Oh, Noob's going upwards, do he'll gome down from upwa-oh, shit, he's behind me, he'll com-oh, he takes me down, guess we'll reappear from the other side, either from above or from be-oh, we're reappearing from above the spot we were, is there no limit to where this guy can go? 2) It feels creative and strategic. Noob not only uses his sourroundings and his abilities, but also manages to deliver that sebds not only his opponent, but also himself flying backwards, meaning that not only did Noob use strategy and skill to deliver a move more powerful than anything he could have normally thrown, but that this was also something he himsrlf couldn't fully control, yet he still finds his footing instantly. All this fits with Noob's character in this game as a conniving manipulative deceptive bastard who picks carefully his approach and takes it to the fullest. Add to all that a good hit sound effect, a great camera shake and a good scream of pain from the opponent, and we've got one superb grappling move in our hands. The only things that are kind of weird are the fact that, just like with Kung Lao, Noob passes right next to the ground when he goes down (but that is understandable and excused because of Arcade limitations the team had back then) and that Noob dragging the opponent causes as much health loss as the final slam, which kind of makes the final slam less impactful. Teleporting in and of itself causing health loss was something that I always found weird, but it was something I could accept as a gameplay mechanic, but it feels more right to me that teleporting the opponent should in general cause a small health loss and definitely not sn equal amount to what is ultimately one of the most impactful moves in the entire gameplay of the game. MK4: Noob no longer has a shadow effect after him, but that is understandable due to the technological limitations of the time the team had to deal with. For starters, this version has the final slam cause more damage than the grab, so that's a good start. The health loss however is very small when compared to the bigger MK4 healthbars and that is quite a shame because, unlike nowadays, there are no other moves with this level of conceptual impact in the game, so the move ends up feeling weaker. That if the pathetic sound effect and the the absense of a yell from the opponentas well as the way too small and way too quick bounce of the opponent didn't make the move look pathetic already. The opponent's weapons falling off actually does add some good impact to the attack, although you can argue that gameplay-wise it makes the move over-powered (maybe the snaller health exists to balance that out). Overall, the move animation-wise follows the same principles as the MKT version, but then we get to the recovery animation and it now turned into a summersault. Not conceptually a step backwards (although not a decision I particularly care for), you could argue that it adds a bit of a threat level to Noob with him playfully revovering from getting sent flying, but MK4's already janky animation and cartoonishly over-the-top aesthetic, coupled with the fact that the summersault itself feels so overanimated, makes it difficult to look cool and instead looks ridiculous. Armageddon: Now the healthbar goes down by Noob grabbing the opponent before they hit the ground and the final slam takes no health. How lovely. This is where the move gets turned into a german suplex. German suplexes are awesome, so no complaints for that. Plus, the 3D arena does wonders at allowing the move to be fully showcased. This time, the after effect is smoke and that just does not fit Noob, but at least it adds a nice sense of impact when it also gets used as an effect for the opponent hitting the floor. The final summersault this time actually works better, thanks a bit to the 3D aesthetic and a big part to the impact and power it adds to the final slam, but also because it fits with Noob's character in the game. In MKT, Noob's little bounce with him almost instantly getting into a fighting stance yet again fits with a careful scheming servant of Shinnok. In Armageddon, Noob's ambitions have significantly grown, so his summersault feels more like a power display on his behalf. The sound effect for the hit is just alright, but the gibberish are very much appreciated. The "To die!" is my preferred because gibberish are better when my mind makes something out of them and because the delivery fits Noob more and vibes more with me. Still, multiple gibberish means more variety and spamming the move feels more entertaining. A flawed but good recreation. MK9: Oh. This. Well. Let's start with the good things first. It follows the healthbar logic of MK4 and the not that big healthdrop is now OK because there are some bigger stronger moves available now, the bone-crunchind sound effect for the final slam is excellent on its own, albeit it does not feel that it properly potrays of the attack (presumably the attack doesn't seem to go that much above the camera's height, but I feel that it still needed a stronger soynd effect to accompany the bone crunch), the Noob roll and the opponent falling on the ground after the move flow well enough, I appreciate the subtle camera shake and the two equally fitting and fun gibberish aaaaand that's it. Everything else about this move sucks. Noob gets launched into the air as if he's a fucking Kryptonian with a purple energy trail behind him that feels way too bright for someone who's supposed to be pitch black and ultra threatening. Now it looks like Noob leaves pixie dust behind him. The effect isn't even that well animated. And not only all that but apparently he can fly super fast now, because he comes out of the portal, gets launched outside of the camera's POV and comes crashing down with the same speed. Yes, the idea is that he is doing a german suplex, but it doesn't look like, it looks more like a mid-air dive. And it does not fit a character like Noob. Noob feels too strong while the attack feels too weak. Instead of Noob manipulating his sourroundings and the laws of physics to his will, it feels like Noob is just a generic capeshit flying brick who's just that fast and strong and the move acts predictably and follows what you'd expect. He instantly grabs you, not even letting you guess what he'll do and he goes above and comes down from above as you'd expect. The fact that the opponent's body doesn't react at getting slammed, the absense of a yell, Noob and the opponent being missing for like a second from the screen, which isn't that much, but it messes with the move's pacing and the fact that the enhanced version doesn't have an enhanced sound effect nor a bigger health loss at the final slam really don't help at how weak the move feels (althougg the last argument is not that bothersome because admittedly it's just minor and not fully necessary details, plus you could argue that this would make the move too overpowered). It feels like it implies that "ooooooh, Noob didn't even need to use 10% of his power, ooooooh". Sure, you vould argue that the opponent's body couldn't move because Noob is holding it, but that was never a thing that mattered before, BECAUSE NOOB WAS BOUNCING ALONGISE HIS OPPONENT! Also, you could at the very least have the opponent's arms and legs react to the slam. Noob is presented as too strong and too restrained by the laws of physics and the move is presented as too weak. The enhanced version feels like another version of an additional version that ends up overshadowing the original version and making it look pointless. I appreciate that it does give a bit more of a feeling that Noob is in full control of the move and the fact you can move from your position to another goves a bit of a freedom and better ganeplay pacing and that the move tries to fresh itself up visually and build up impact in general is good, but it ends up looking a bit visually repetitive and not fast enough to accomplish that. (The MK11 version os analysed in the replies.)

MK11: This is one is an interesting one to look at. Not only it fixes some of the issues with the MK9 version, but it also manages to turn on their heads some things about MK11 that bug me. The move itself is a continuation of the MK9 version, so for starters, internal consistency, but it now includes Noob's reaping hooks, so it also included Noob's newer additions in this story. These hooks not only make the move feel more visible given the very far away camera, but they also give Noob the ability to have more control and usage of his sourroundings, fitting for a manipulative opportunist like him, thus allowing the hit to not only be significantly more impactful, but also visually more unique and surprising. The extended versions of the move do make the original (and the final version makes all the others) look inferior and unnecessary to exist, but due to MK11's feel of freedom in regards to move exploration and the nature of the move itself, it does add to the feeling of unpredictability and manipulation that suits this move, plus, each enhanced version feels more like the original move + an addition rather than just a longer version of the original move, so the original moves still feels important. Additionally, the additional parts in the enhanced versions are quick enough to not overstay their welcome and to provide a good build-up for the final slam. It's a pity that we can't move from one position to another, it was one of the better things about the MK9 version, but the move happens too quickly for that to matter a lot, so I'm not complaining. The final hit is delivered with a pretty dynamic set of poses by Noob - even the static feet don't distract because Noob performs the move mid-air - and there is a good bounce on the ground, followed by a good hit sound effect and a good yell by the opponent and passing through the portals has a nice sound too, although the fact that the final hit gets drowned out by all the other sounds in the move, especially in the enhanced versions is a legitimate issue. The biggest issue with the sound design, and the move in general, is the two hook stabs. There is a well-done metallic sound for each...it's just that this sound only makes sense against cyborgs or armored opponents (and yes, the Terminator is often described as a cyborg), but Noob has it for everyone. I mean, was it that hard to at least copy paste one of the stabby sound effects in Baraka's Chop Chop special move above both of Noob's stabs in this move? A small quick stab sound effect would even fit the speed of Noob going up better and it wouldn't feel needlessly impactful. Speaking of going up, the camera follows up Noob as he gets launched upwards allowing us to experience the move to its fullest, which also fixes some of the issues with the MK9 version, and there is a good pause for Noob to stab the opponent with the second hood and begin the process of slamming them to the ground and it just...adds...impact. Also, the move leads to a pretty good Brutality. It's creative, the animation of the opponent falling so fast that they turn into a static blurr is a cool and well-executed concept, this Brutality fits Noob's sadistic nature and it's cool that we get a Brutality that pulled off the same feel as all the other with no need of blood, gore or even the death of the opponent. More of that please! Well done, MK11. You gave us the second best version of this awesome move. Bravo!
