What I really loved about the games pre-Syndicate is that when there was an update to the parkour it felt natural (in most ways). It seems like with the newer titles Ubisoft basically made the best system (in their eyes) and has decided to not even try to evolve

There is no real parkour in the newer systems. Whereas in the old systems you had control over your movements and what to grab onto, the newer ones are just "push and hold the run button". It's not fun, but neither is it bad. It just removes parkour from the playable side of things and leaves it up to animations.

I think Unity was the peak of the animations being fluid, dynamic, entertaining and unique. But the earlier games 1, and the Ezio trilogy had my favourite parkour system, where just a bit more thought and planning had to go into scaling structures, with platforming being an entire puzzle mechanic for example with the hidden tombs in AC2 where you had to figure out how to climb around to reach your goal. It also used to make getting to viewpoints and diving off them feel that bit more rewarding and exciting. While all this is kinda gone from AC3 onwards, you can just sorta hold the run button down and go in any direction and the game will sort itself out for you almost automatically.

I think something that's probably harder to keep track of but equally important is how much the game's narrative interacts with the parkour system as well. AC2 was the one that really made me think about it most because there was an important upgrade you only get something like 60% into the game (the glove that lets you jump while climbing) and there's a whole mission with cutscenes to address it. There's also the Assassin Tombs which are just there to showcase the parkour. As the series goes on, the game's narrative engages less and less with it as it also adds in many more systems like going through sewers or sailing boats or riding horses, and the parkour is just how the character gets around. There used to be a whole dynamic of rooftops being a separate world for assassins on the lam from guards, but most of the games now barely take place in cities

When you say until unity do you mean the games after unity didn't offer improvements? I never particularly liked unity but the parkour system in that game was such a vast improvement and the games after that haven't felt nearly as great. It lead to some of the coolest moments I've experienced in an assassin's Creed from a gameplay perspective. The ones after however I would agree are a step back and don't offer the same level of satisfaction for me personally.

It’s one of these reasons that it’s sometimes easy to fall out of love with video games. Now games have to look pretty, their mechanics simple and a bigger open world is the focus rather perfecting the craft that they previously created; I have to agree with you that Unity really has a good parkour system unique to itself, and it’s sad to see that we’ll see it honed and improved upon.

Imo the settings make a great deal of difference. The devs have to create cities and locations that have the perfect balance of historical accuracy and gameplay favourability. France was a great location due to its city architecture and the fact that it's the home of parkour. You cannot create a similar setting in, say, Ancient Egypt or Ancient Greece so I'd say Origins and Odyssey do good enough with what they have.

it definitely makes me feel hella guilty bc the simple mechanics that old time fans are frustrated by are the exact reason i love the rpg trio, im just so bad at complex gameplay wish ubisoft made the rpg trio their own series and continued assassins creed with refining the parts that made the og games so beloved instead of trying to bring in people like me, but unfortunately that would be. a massive financial hit for ubisoft. they would effectively be making two games of the same caliber but for two different audiences, splitting the current audience in two. meaning same profit of one game but with the work of making two games

I think it's important for Ubisoft to switch up how the parkour works in each game. I know it kinda sucks taking away abilities when moving onto the next game but the fact is someone like Evior is not gonna have the finesse and precision as someone like Arno because of the era they're from. It was kind of unfortunate for Syndicate since they had the most modern era and at that point in time it was all about streamlining society and making buildings as tall and monolithic as possible. Hopefully with Codename Red we can get a bit more of that Arno finesse since we'll be playing as a shinobi assassin.

I actually find the Ezio trilogy (and the first game) even more fluid than some of the other titles. Maybe it was due to the precise jump thingy, but from Revelations backwards Ezio and Altair will land where you control them to, whilst in later games sometime the MC moves in places...The Ezio Trilogy does that too especially with the higher ledges grabs or getting in hiding places, but way less often and rarely mid-parkour. Thank you so much for covering these mechanics with such depth! It means so much to us for you to bring detailed moves to hundreds of fans who have never seen them. Here are a few more that eluded you, particularly in the Kenway saga since I haven't seen them mentioned in other comments: Beginning in AC3 there are now two different types of jumps: The precision jump, which you already know about, and the long jump, which is done by holding jump while approaching an edge or tapping it at any time. This will completely ignore the safety restrictions put in place by the precision jump, allowing you to clear that gap that was giving you trouble at the risk of hurting yourself. Looks like you did exactly this by accident in a later clip? Not sure what's going on there You can rope swing in Black Flag by approaching the vertical ropes at the edge of the ship. Any other swinging objects are repurposed from that mechanic Rogue has another unique descent object: a bright red flag you can tear and ride to the base of the pole one time only before it's destroyed All the Kenway games also have a fast edge descent with varying behavior depending on what kind of surface it start on and when you queue up the action. These will also take you all the way down no matter how high you are, making them just as potentially dangerous at long jumps. They're done by running or precision jumping to an edge and holding block, which also has a chance to cause an accidental air tackle, particularly in Rogue since you can target civilians. See my video Controlled Descents in New York for some examples

What you missed in AC Brotherhood is that horse riding inside Rome has got a new feature. In AC II, riding a horse started with a trot when only moving the stick, holding RB or R1 will make the horse gallop and holding X or A will make the horse sprint. In AC Brotherhood riding inside Rome does not allow you to sprint. However, holding A or X will make Ezio get ready to jump off when you release the button. This is a very useful technique to get of the horse faster and start climbing immideately. The cool thing about this is, when you ride towards a wooden beam and jump towards it (I think you have to press the hold button for Ezio to cling to it), Ezio will grab the beam with his hands and with his momentum flip upwards and stand on this beam he just held onto. If there are two beams, ezio will hold on the first beam and with the momemtum of riding the will swing and land with a backflip on the second beam. Its a little tricky and rare move you can do and not that useful actually, but very impressive and fun move to do.

I don't know about that. It was not necessarely more realistic. Parkour felt slow in ac1 and ezio games in my opinion. Slow does not necessarely mean more realistic. Its like reloading in fps games. Taking 5 secs to take out a fresh magazine does not make it more realistic, a well trained soldier in real life could literally reload a weapon in a second. There are videos and stuff of them doing it. Same thing goes for parkour. In unity its way more realistic and smoother, if you are hanging from somewhere and you take so long from jump to jump like in the older games you are gonna get tired pretty quick and as a result you will fall. My personnal favorite AC parkour system will always be Ezio's trilogy. AC2 is simply the best. Brotherhood is a bit clunky though, compare to AC2 and Revelations. Kenway's saga is the worst. The one button system is terrible. That way, your caracter will automatically have to choose between at least 3 options and will almost never take the right one, which made me mad a lot of times. That makes your caracter really clunky. AC4's parkour is a bit less bad than AC3 and Rogue though. Unity for me was clunky as well, but not that terrible. Syndicate is great but too simple. RPG series are ok but nothing special. I'm not counting Valhalla though, i just dislike that game so much that i hardly played. All of your explanations about AC parkour are really accurate! Agree completely. I went from Revelations to BF and almost didn't recognize the game. I can climb ANYTHING fluidly, as long as the game recognizes my predetermined route... No skill. No grab, sprint, jump, roll inputs. No leaving the designated track. Man I think BF is a cool GAME, just not an AC game. Combat was just spamming rather than specific counters for different classes of enemies. I really like the idea of the story. Being slowly wooed over by becoming exposed to the bad side of the templars. I loved that you had to lose everyone important to you before you were willing to admit the error of you ways. Fantastic game. Just feels like they took everything that made AC special and Old Yellered it.

I understand that not everyone will like the grapple launcher in syndicate, but I sort of felt it was a thing that was somewhat needed, in that era. With streets becoming incredibly wide, and the way London has its infrastructure, the traditional methods for parkour would just look out of place and stupid, so your only option would be a lift or just climb straight up. Also the roads are so much wider since they had to adapt to the carriages, which means there are usually very few crossings on the rooftops, and they could be 100s of meters apart, which would really stagnate missions. I personally quite like the rope launcher in syndicate but I would only ever want it in London, because of what I said. Plus I guess the assassin's need to evolve too in some ways.

And dont use the "have you played any other assassin's Creed games?" on me, i have played the older games (up until AC4) about 3-4 times and the newer games atleast twice, and im actually in the middle of the doing an AC marathon right now and when you play these games back to back the difference is crystal clear on how superior the older games are in terms of parkour (and also story-telling but that's beside the point)

2 and 3 are my favorites easily

I just want to thank you for bringing justice de the AC 1 Parkour System, it's the slowest in the series and the most imprecise at times, but it's the most complex and rewarding hands down.

Unity was my fav of all time. Being able to play online with others and do missions was great alongside seeing each and everyone's different outfits and weapon loadouts. I wish Ubisoft made another game like Unity. Sure the solo play is fun but when together with friends or randoms it makes the experience 10x better.

AC Unity and AC 3 are great to look at, the intensity and speed feeling of AC3 and the wide range of possibilities in AC unity, others feels floaty on AC RPGs era or clunky on AC4 BF outside of AC 1 to AC revelation which feels just great and simple.

Y'know, I wasn't sure what exactly I hated about 3's parkour, but you got it in one. It feels like I don't have any control over Connor at all. I feel a very similar way about Odyssey and especially Valhalla. The parkour is almost slower than the older games, and playing feels like Eivor or Kassandra will do whatever they want.

Great analysis video! As someone who's been looking into playing the AC games for the first time, this has given me an idea of where to start. Also, I couldn't help but notice the bit of music at the beginning whose title rhymes with "Pool of the Crates". Love the video!

Oh my, such a detailed and informative video. As an old AC series fan, I really enjoyed every second. Very well done.

6:56...I agree. Ezio had the best parkour. Whilst not as fast/flashy as later systems, it was the most responsive. Ezio did what you told him to. As the animations got better/more involved, I found the games tried doing what it thought I meant to, not what I wanted it to do.

I really miss the walk, to jog, to run system. Even though it was limited I felt like I had more control. Hell the buttons were labeled with limbs in mind. 😁

I really do love how you see Ezio really evolve in his skills and how free running gets easier with him in time and he learns more things. (Even if they say later on it makes him much more sore than it used to lol.)

no one mentioned how big of a leap in changes to revelations it was, i truly loved the hook blade, gave more uses than just parkour, rolling over enemy and even hooking them just to throw them at other enemies. in mirage that seem to be set in a similar location I NEED the hookblade back.

Well, its no surprise that (honestly and objectively speaking) unity has the best parkour. They just absolutely nailed the gameplay and I love it (cant wait for that one ezio fanboy to come tell me otherwise lmao). And IMO black flag is the second best one. Good video man 👍.

I mean mechanically, 2nd best to ac1 to revelations but visually I'd say it is the best

@@z-chan946 Found the Ezio Fanboy. No but really, I'm only joking, I respect everyone's favourite AC parkour system, (as long as it's not from the RPG era) because they all have their pro's and cons.

Looking back on some of the older games and seeing that new system come in around AC 3, they pretty much went back to that same old clunkiness of parkour. Switching between just the three new games alone feels like such a drag because each game has its quirks to the point where going from Origins to Odyssey feels like learning a whole new skill set and a whole new way of getting frustrated at the mechanics and lag in actions or the character not going where you want or climbing up a completely different wall. I've noticed in Valhalla it's a lot worse to the point you have to be pin-point accurate as to where you want to start climbing or when you want to jump off otherwise Eivor will climb a wall six feet away or just slide off an object that you were trying to vault off of. Sometimes I have to spam the buttons to get off or on things and most of the time you can't move the stick to change direction, just the camera and point Eivor where you want to go. Please note, I have only played Origins through to Valhalla as I am still relatively new to the series and this is just my view as a new gamer looking back on old games that i'll never get to play myself.

You made me realise what that little thing that's been bugging me about these rpg AC games, massiveRPG gamer, so Ireally enjoyed the games for that aspect. But there was some element on which I couldn't put my finger... it's the parkour system. Ever since Unity it was that one thing missing. So glad I saw this video. Unity's parkour system is definitely my favourite. Even the game had it's faults, the parkour was the selling point of that game
@richardvanimpelen8052 жыл бұрын
Origins actually does have a system that allows you to grab a handhold on the way down if you make a wrong jump. Hold cross or A depending on the system and aim with the left stick. Could you call that a grab back system? Don't know if it's the same for odyssey/ Valhalla, haven't tested it
@richardvanimpelen8052 жыл бұрын
@Telleva thinking about it, doesn't seem like odyssey has it since there's no fall damage anyway and you get kinda locked into this no-fall-damage-jump-animation. Valhalla might have it.

While I appreciate and recognize the freedom of the system from the earlier games, Unity is unmatched. The amount of options and player control paired with the gorgeous presentation and the beautiful jam-packed map of Paris just makes it unparalleled, even if you don't look at it in-depth it just _feels_ amazing, easily the best in the franchise. Excellent video, simple video footage for those who want a simple quick comparison and an in-depth explanation for those who like to delve deeper into these things. My only criticism would be to position the subtitles in the center and higher up on the screen, the current position is a bit hard to read.

You lost me when you said "player control" for Unity. It has anything but. Far too many people praise the parkour in Unity because of the improvements in ANIMATIONS, when the MECHANICS have actually taken a dive, since so many of them remove player freedom. Free climbing down removes all player choice and is much more automated. In other areas, the game's AI attempts to guess where the player wants to jump to or climb, resulting in a LOT of unintended leaps. Arno often performs extremely odd jumps where he'll jump MUCH HIGHER than usual BECAUSE of said AI. He'll float right through the air simply because you jumped in a specific direction and the game thought you meant to jump to a light, ledge, or something else that was just a bit higher than what you were ACTUALLY trying to jump to. This leads into unpredictability. With the Ezio collection, manual jumps and precise input were required to parkour. For me (and many others who don't glaze over the parkour KZbin shorts that don't actually show anything other than animations, since mechanics are an actual FELT thing), Unity does not represent the best parkour when it comes to gameplay. Visually? Sure, it looks the best.
