Evolution of Penny in Nintendo Games (2006-2021)

Back in the days of Smooth Moves, and even up until Game and Wario, Penny wasn't really too notable. Basically like a "Oh, another inventor character. Go figure" type of deal. However, Gold onward saw a remarkable transformation in which Penny became a bit more quirky and started taking her popstar dream a bit more seriously (according to a Japanese blog, her popstar dreams actually go all the way back to Smooth Moves believe it or not). As such, she now stuck out from the crowd. Get it Together only made Penny even better than she already became. She invented a water jetpack, she's very kawaii when in the game, she has a microgame mix all to herself, and most importantly, she has her own song now, and I think a few of us can agree that it's the new best Warioware song. What this tells us is that we've been underappreciating Penny all this time, and that it'd be wise to give her the love she truly deserves. In short, she went from just being generic to becoming best girl, and it only took 15 years to do it.

I feel like with the way her stage ended in Smooth Moves, it was kinda obvious she at least had an affiliation with music. But I agree with everything else (except for "generic" but then again I'm biased because I did like her in Smooth Moves already and thought she was entertaining in DIY as the one teaching lessons and getting Wario back in line lol).

Out of all the WarioWare characters Penny seems to get the most design changes like in the Thumbnail it showed the Smooth Moves and Game & Wario designs together and she looked noticeably older which most of the other returning characters had the same designs just with different eyes

That’s why I have so much respect for this series. Nintendo could’ve easily said “Oh, a Wario game, let’s make it ugly!”, and to be fair it does do that during the microgames sometimes. But the overall general artstyle they chose is one of the most expressive and unique in the Nintendo library imo. Like, if I knew nothing about this series and you told me these colors, designs, and characters were for a game starring Wario, I probably wouldn’t believe you.

Practically the entire cast is charismatic, bar Wario himself and maybe Dr Crygor who is more on the weird side or Orbulon who is, well, alien (which is kinda the point lol). I think it's clear the character designer likes their job and the resulting characters, they initially didn't want to use Wario because they didn't design him, and only accepted when he was allowed to design a new outfit for him (which's why Ware almost never features Wario in his traditional overalls).

Penny has actually quite some personality in Warioware D.I.Y during the tutorials (which is a shame that haven’t been included in the video). I mean, she’s the classic “you’re doing great” tutorial character, but her interactions with wario are also pretty funny.

Her pop-star aspirations weren't that obvious until Gold, and then weren't really fleshed out until Get it Together with her song. She does stick out the least compared to the rest of the cast (aside from maybe Cricket, who's also pretty typical personality wise), but I wouldn't call her forgettable. Her design is at least cute, and her being a "go-getter" in terms of failing and getting back up again is something, I suppose.
