In my humble opinion, 1977 was their best year in terms of performing: they played the tracks faster than the album, but it wasn't like a locomotion rushing and Joey wasn't running out of air constantly.

Yeah, I know that Johnny had decided to play the songs faster and faster in concert to keep up with the Metal bands. But some songs lose their essence when played too fast. This was clearly the case when you listen to their live stuff in the 90s

I had a friend who dismissed The Ramones as a band that only played three chords. Despite that being a simplistic view, A) That’s the point. B) It’s always been the point. And C) It will always be the point. Thank God for that. I always viewed their sound as urban surf music and have 14 of their albums. They should have had multiple chart hits and the fact they’re bigger posthumously than they ever were when alive proves there is no God.

They were way out of the mainstream back in the mid 70s, so its understandable that you missed them. Never too late to become a fan. I started listening to them in 1976 after reading a review in some rock magazine. Maybe Cream? Said something about them sounding like a buzzsaw or a subway screaming down the tracks.That got my attention. Most enjoyable concert I ever saw was seeing them in a small club in Ocean City Md in the 70s. And I have seen most of the big bands like the Rolling Stones, Pink Floyd etc.

The Ramones did branch out a bit but really not that much. I mean hell the reason why they made end of the century was for air play. The story of the Ramones is that they were always with their original concept and branching out very little but not much.

People who say they never changed or that there wasn't any evolution... they need to listen to the albums. Happy rock'n'roll-driven punk rock they did during the '70s sounds way different than the darker and sadder stuff they did from the mid '80s on, with solos and a more distorted guitar tone, heavier songs, more serious. You can tell they weren't having a good time in the band anymore, at least between them. But the video shows them playing songs from the '70s in the '90s, that doesn't show the evolution they actually made. Songs like Take the Pain Away or Cabbies on Crack, compare that to Cretin Hop and tell me how they never changed. Not to mention the early '80s era.
@zerpumpkins9790
@zerpumpkins9790 5 жыл бұрын
Not to mention, their album Animal Boy is so different from their first album, it's definitely very 80's pop-like in some songs like "She Belongs To Me." And Joey's voice has gotten slowly deeper through out the years.
@tonyajm8289
@tonyajm8289 5 жыл бұрын
They aren't fans of the band. I'd argue they got better, less consitent, but tighter and they did progress. "Poison Heart", "Pet Semetary", "Howling at The Moon", even " Danny Says" etc. They've always had punk pop love songs. Even later stuff "Tomorrow she goes Away", "I believe in miracles" are better hard rock/punk tracks than the original. The ramones, still underated. Only namechecked by hipsters.

Mientras tanto..

Glenn Atkinson on the one hand yeah, they got faster, but the quality of the songs really diminished by 96. Joeys voice sounds like it’s severely stressed and they are just playing so fast that some of them totally lose their identity. I bet in any room it was nice to see them because it was so loud and intense that you didn’t care...I just wish they wouldn’t have put so much emphasis on speed in the later years

Really cool idea, though begs to have the audio remastered. This would work well for a lot of bands especially someone like Radiohead whose music completely evolves from record to record.

A lot of people blame Marky for the fast tempos on the later shows, but that was actually a result of every single show being a little bit faster than the previous one throughout their whole career.
