It'd already be hard to fathom even how far it had already developed in the 40's, 50's, and especially the 60's

This is also a reason why there's some huge generational gaps in Korea. My grandmother was born in an agrarian society that was also a colony, learned japanese in school, and her city was just south of the border before the war but ended up being in the north afterwards, and during the war she is the only one that made it to the South, got married later, had 5 friggin children, and raised them alone after my grandfather died when my mom was still a teenager My dad was also born uber privilegd in this society as my grandfather was a doctor, but even then the polio vaccine wasn't available to them, and he got polio as a kid in the 60s. And then both of his parents died, went to an orphanage etc. I grew up comfortably middle class in a fast growing society, on the cusps of becoming a "developed" country in the 90s, and moved to the US in the early 2000s. The last 20 yrs also have been surreal in terms of how much KOrea is on the global stage, like even 10-15 yrs ago lol nobody other than a small subset of people knew what the hell kpop was

The biggest givers to the third world is overwhelmingly China, in the USA our role is to limit progress abroad, not support it. But regarding the pandemic the biggest donators were ironically and remarkably the sanctioned Cuba (bringing aid to Europe) and Russia (aid to Italy). Wealthy EU by contrast provided no aid. We cut Cuba off with sanctions yet they did all they could to held Europe when the pandemic was at its very worst, and hardly discussed in the media.

My country, Sweden, went through similar developments like South Korea. Mid 1920s, Sweden was amongst the poorest countries in the world. We had one of the greatest emigrations in Europe (to the US) where approximately 1,4 million Swedes emigrated (estimated population in Sweden back then was 5-6 million people), only beaten by the Irish if I am not mistaken. By 1950 this was all changed due to many and heavy reforms carried out by our government. Nowadays, Sweden is one of the richest and most developed countries in the world, alongside with South Korea. However, what I actually want to say is: I love the Korean culture and modesty, the inventive and educative spirit. Not to forget the Korean food which is the best in the world. Also the clean and on-spot design and architecture, even that quite similar to the Scandinavian one with all its differences. Keep up the good work, Korea!

It's mind boggling to see the development after the war& to realize so many of the people we're seeing were carrying inner hurt over being separated from family members. My mother lost her parents in that war and, at 8, cared for 3 younger siblings. After she came to America in 1976, she lost touch with her Korean siblings. Nowadays, when I see her focused on the distance in contemplation, I know what she's thinking of. She thinks of her childhood in Korea before the war broke her family and of her home country before she left it in '76 to an entirely different disaster. She's almost 80 and its heartbreaking she never got a break in life 💔
