Kelly Slater Pro Surfer felt so good to play. I think surfing games in terms of graphics are a decade behind or more. Just look at the snowboarding and skate games similar style gameplay much better graphics.

well its hard to give life to fluid waves built by swell frequency and breaks and the entire game is made of collision the guy that can master a surfing game graphics is the king of talent in industry

fixed levels compared to a dynamic water level, yeah it's harder to do than one might think

I tried to simulate real waves using Computational Fluid Dynamics software in real time but computers still aren't fast enough (2025). "Other" approaches are needed but I think this is a solvable problem...

tran world surf xbox is the best for ever ! We need a v2 with more realistic wave, faster ,and more random. So we can paddle read ocean and waves like real life. Edit : you are missing one on dreamcast which was really fun.

I came here to see this video because I heard rumours that in GTA 6 they will make a surf mechanic and I was curious how well developed were surfing games.

GTA 6's surfing will most likely be like Kelly Slater's surfing game (it's kind of / sort of like Tony Hawk, but on water) mixed with arcade style surfing like Surf's Up. It definitely won't be like Barton Lynch's Pro Surfing (that game came out on Playstation 5 last year and is more of a very realistic competition style simulation, placing emphasis on gaining Olympic style points from judges through very heavily simulated realistic competition which includes penalties and other strict rules that have to be followed. Something like that wouldn't make sense for GTA 6 for several reasons. So... I'm going with GTA 6's surfing being a fusion of Kelly Slater (a game which encourages players to hit other characters and also aggressively splash water on other characters, like Windsurfers, that are in their path. You get points for doing that in Kelly Slater. If you do that in the simulation heavy Barton Lynch you get disqualified. LOL. Kelly Slater also had other crazy stuff that was fun. You can do some really crazy tricks in Kelly Slater. Some of it may not be the most realistic of moves, but they do look cool and are lots of fun to do) with some of Surf's Up arcade style gameplay thrown in. In other words, more on the arcade / casual style of surfing, which is a lot of fun.

The biggest hurdle (or wave) towards making a great surfing game is to create realistic water simulation. There are so many variables in play to simulate accurate fluid hydrodynamics. Add to that the computer power needed to do it.
