After a lot of research, modeling, animation and editing work this video is finally here! I want to transform this type of video into a real format, it will be tiring, but at the same time it will be really interesting.
For the future of the channel I have quite a few ideas in mind and some support wouldn't hurt, so I leave you my Patreon page. For subscribers there are 3 types of subscriptions that you can make, each with various benefits!

I remind you that this video doesn't want to be a "Before the dinosaurs were much cooler". Absolutely not, this video was made to show the progress paleontology has made over the years. I probably missed some details, but please understand that all this work was done by one person. That said, thanks for the support!

I remember seeing that in the 80s. I think it might be better to say when that was definitive, as the 70s and 80s was a revolutionary time for paleontology, when dinosaurs were first being thought of as more an 'in between' for reptiles and birds then purely reptilian.

For those who don't know, they were originally designed with 3 claws on each hand because a more complete skeleton wasn't discovered yet. So, they had to estimate based off other dinosaurs like the Allosaurus, which had 3 claws.

@catpoke9557
@catpoke9557 Жыл бұрын
@@Dragonstorm62190 Probably not, actually. Large ground based predators need camouflage, in general, to catch their prey. Dinosaurs are also able to see in full color, which makes it even more important for something that HUNTS dinosaurs to not have bright colors, unlike modern birds. Birds strike from above so camo isn't as important. They also usually hunt animals with limited color vision. Basically, bright colors are viable on small fast animals that can fly or hide under brush. It's not viable for large predators. Though herbivores of all sizes can be bright. Herbivores just need to be fast enough or strong enough to escape a predator. Camo is optional

Thank you for not using the JP T. rex in the 90s section lol. Jurassic Park did revolutionize Dinosaurs for a ton of people. But it still wasn't paleoart. This was a nice watch, seeing the way our perception of these animals changes throughout the years will never get old to me. Especially because it likely won't ever stop. I might have problems with the way dinosaurs are handled in pop culture. But i have deep respect for early paleoart. And speaking of. Well, like i said. Jurassic Park was accurate for its time, and revolutionized dinosaurs for a lot of people which i happened more now a days in dinosaur movies. But, Jurassic Park's Tyrannosaur still wasn't our perception of the animal itself in the 90s. Paleontologists didn't see Jurassic Park's Tyrannosaurus as teh definitive T .rex.

Again, i'm not criticizing the jurassic park design. But it was not the definitive portrayal of the animal. You can even see pictures of other 90s depictions behind the 90s T. rex model. Which itself isn't the JP rex. Yes, it was iconic. But it wasn't the only or most up to date T. rex at the time.

It always looked like an animal! Even the first one! What the hell makes the others less like an animal to you? They all look equally realistic. People like you are so pretentious and condescending! What does an animal have to have in order to resemble an animal? An animal can have exposed teeth, and animal can have a dragging tail, and animal can be lean with a big head, and an animal can have osteoderms. The only thing close to not being realistically animal-like is the shrink-wrapping on the 90s Rex, but that is easily fixable. Just remove the bone protrusions and it's realistic!

@william3100
@william3100 2 ай бұрын
@simbiotesnus1013 real T. Rex that we know of. Back then, we thought these depictions were real T. Rex, and I guarantee you what we know now isn't the full real T. Rex in what it truly looked like in life. "Real T. Rex" is kinda subjective here. Separating what we know now, most of the other depictions work well as being T. Rex designs, but in a different way. I look at it like the many depictions of fictional creatures like Godzilla in terms of design. Many designs have different aesthetics, shapes, and feels that all still feel like Godzilla, but in different ways. Some or beefier, some are slimmer, some look scary, some look kinda "cute." When looking at it through a purely artistic way, there is no singular correct way to design a T. Rex.
@simbiotesnus1013
@simbiotesnus1013 2 ай бұрын
@@william3100 But modern reconstructions are closer to reality than others. Now we know that T.Rex didn't have three-fingered arms and a frog-like face, we know that it didn't stand like a kangaroo, we know that it probably wasn't that skinny and couldn't pronate its wrists, and we know that it had neither osteoderms nor feathers, so all these past reconstructions are delusional. T.Rex was a real animal and is actually quite well studied, so its reconstructions should be judged on accuracy rather than design.
@william3100
@william3100 2 ай бұрын
@simbiotesnus1013 I wasn't talking from a scientific accuracy standpoint. Also, T. Rex, in its basic form, is most well known for small, two fingered arms, a big head, not dragging its tail, and was a bit hefty. You can do whatever you want from there in fiction. Remember what I said earlier? I am looking at it through the lens of adapting a fictional creature. Yes, T. Rex was a real animal, but you can do whatever you want in fiction. For example, just because the disney's dinosaur carnotaurus is far from the real animal, doesn't mean it's inferior to the appearance that we know of of the real animal, nor does that make it look less like a "real animal" which is a subjective term thrown around a lot. It also doesn't matter how well studied and understood T. Rex is. There is still so much we don't know about it. Including its real-life appearance. The depiction of T. Rex now will be outdated in the next 30 to 50 years. Also, just because past reconstructions are outdated now, DOES NOT MEAN THEY ARE DELUSIONAL!! Delusional implies being very wrong about the known reality despite it being there to see. Past reconstructions didn't know nor could've known what T. Rex exactly looked like at the time, based on what we know of now, which still isn't even the whole story! Back then, what we knew WAS reality. Even the depiction of the animal back then still could be a real animal in terms of appearance, ignoring what it's known to be now, or it at least looked like a real, breathing animal with features that look closer to reality that pure fiction. If you can believe the appearance of a kangaroo or a platypus can pass off as the appearance of a real animal, then almost anything can, depending on how you design it.

We actually added feathers to T. rex for a good reason. Basically we discovered that coelurosaurs were feathered animals, and at the time, every coelurosaur we were finding with integument had feathers. This changed after a bit of course with us discovering nothing but scales on tyrannosaurids. But at the time, it seemed feathers were universal for coelurosaurs. So our best bet, given that we were just guessing with T. rex, was to make it at least partially feathered.

It's incredible to see how much perception have changed - In the early days of Paleontology, prehistoric animals were seen as antediluvian monsters, almost sort of a novelty with a retro touch. Nowadays, they're reconstructed much like true living animals. Even more impressive would be doing the same kind of video with some Dromaeosaurid, in nowadays' most up-to-date reconstructions they truly almost look like toothed birds with claws sticking out the wings and a longer tail. But yet, almost birds.

@@AgroAcro all coelurosaurs had feathers as they were ancestral to all dinosaurs. 1. the 2017 skin impression paper never outright ruled feathered rex entirely, just ruled out the idea of it being super fluffy 2. the skin impressions are far too small on a 40ft animal to even guess much, they were already found on regions where we knew they were featherless.
@AgroAcro

@@ashprice1123 Some fair points, but I have some responses 1. We have skin impressions from all over the body, including many areas that would probably have feathers if the T.rex did. 2. Large animals like Elephants and Whales had ancestors that were covered in fur, but now have barely any hair at all
@ashprice1123
@ashprice1123 5 ай бұрын
@@AgroAcro 1. those skin impressions are tiny, like im talking penny sized skin impressions 2. feathers and fur not only act as two completely different things (fur only heats up an animal while feathers serve as a heating, coolant, display feature ETC) but theropods have different air sacs, metabolism + body build ETC which means that theropods did not produce as much heat thus t rex wouldn't overheat with feathers. THE THEROPOD VS LARGE MAMMAL COMPARISON IS THEREFORE REDUDANT.

As seen in the the earlier postures of T.rex, they were originally envisioned in the tripod posture, which is the standard posture of Godzilla (Gojira).

I’ve heard that only some t rexes in colder climates had feathers. But without knowing that, this video kind of implies that we thought they had feathers in 2016 but the took that back. I feel like a couple of footnotes talking about what type of new discoveries were made for that year would have gone a long way. Other than that I thoroughly enjoyed the work put in, thank you .

What came up that made us ditch the feathered concept for the T rex? especially since it seems more and more likely that raptors definitely had feathers? Was something new found or realized? I get some of the other advancements like fixing the "shrinkwrapping" we accidently did to earlier models (conforming too close to the skeleton and not considering fat or other bulk)

T.rex didn't have feathers. We discovered that some non-avian dinosaurs had fearhers and some people went a bit overboard and assumed all did, which is wrong. We have skin impressions of T.rex showing it wasn't covered in feathers.

@william3100
@william3100 9 ай бұрын
How does it feel more calculating? What nonsense is that? That feel is deluded by the fact that's not intelligent to calculate. It also looks more weird and goofy. T. Rex WAS an aggressive scary beast, so the look of a scary beast is more fitting and foreboding. Stop being a contrarian and realize why the scary appearance logically makes people psychologically more unsettled.
