I love whenever a stage production includes the Enchantress. I saw one where every time a petal fell, it was actually her pulling it and at first, she was super into it and dancing, but as time went on, she got more reluctant to do it as she saw how close the Beast was to learning his lesson.

😲I find this is actually to actually be a really powerful decision. It makes the Enchantress a more human character. Even though I do not like everything from the 2017 live-action film, one of the decisions I like is how the Enchantress becomes a character of her own and her motives are more understandable as we see how she is mistreated by society for not fitting in and by the end of the movie she truly wants to help them. Her expression even is genuinely moved after Belle says "I love you". So it'd be really nice to see this stage production including her as a character you said.

I will never forget when the Beast started to transform in front of me when I met him. His paw was slightly off, showing the actor's arm a bit. I pointed it out and, while the Beast and Cast Members panicked at first, I just laughed it off and the Cast Members just said he was prematurely trying to change. The Beast asked to keep it a secret from Belle and I agreed. One of my favorite moments from going to Walt Disney World.

I was fortunate enough to very temporarily work in the Dutch musical version of Beauty and the Beast. What they did is they loosened the wig and removed almost all of Beast's make-up before his big fighting scene, which was done mostly in the dark in a sort of silhouette challenge. Also, his horns, nose, fangs, paws and feet were attached to his cape with strings before this scene. After dying, the actor was then lifted into the sky, where the cape was whisked away with magic in the dark, and in the dark his facial beastly features would follow. The actor who did it did describe the experience like: being waxed every night.

A bit of trivia from an ice skating nerd: The 1996 ice skating show starred famous Russian skaters Alexei Petrenko and Ekaterina Gordeeva. Even though he looks younger, he was 27 at the time and she was 25. Normally, she would have been skating with her husband and lifelong skating partner, Sergei Grinkov, but he had died suddenly of a heart attack while skating the year before. This show was Ekaterina's first skating show since his death.

As someone who has seen "Beauty and the Beast" on Broadway, the Beast's transformation in the end of the show is actually pretty good. The strange thing is that there is another actor who portrays the Young Prince in the beginning of the show. Of course during the transformation in the beginning of the show, they pretty much changed actors (the Young Prince actor to the actor portraying the Beast). And according to an interview with Terrence Mann, the actor who played the Beast is also the same actor who plays the Prince in the end.

Linda Woolverton, the writer for Beauty and the Beast, is my husband's second (third?) cousin. In October 1992 we met her at a family reunion. I introduced my 11-year-old daughter to her, explaining that Laine was to be Belle for Halloween. Linda said, "Belle in her yellow dress?" And Laine, puzzled, looked at her and rather indignantly said, "No, ma'am! Belle with her basket of books!" 'Cause that' s how this family of nerds rolls. Also, we did the show a few year ago and I gotta say our transformation sequence was pretty damn good. Backtracking a bit, we had a skrim on stage and had the intro story mimed out behind the narrator with lights and shadows....and then it came back for the finale and scenes were re-posed from the beginning/intro with flashes of light and in between the light flashes, our stage manger and director were helping our Beast rip off his wig and horns and wipe his face with makeup remover.....it was actually really clever. We also had the rise be an actual actress who danced across the stage and gah. It was actually really really well done for community theatre in a church gym....haha.

Here's an additional fun fact: for the 2017 live action remake they had originally shot a different transformation where the magic of the enchantress basically covered the injured Beast in rose petals and then the Prince emerged from those rose petals. It was all very dramatic. The Prince was shirtless during this scene so Dan Stevens, the actor who plays Beast, had worked out for months to look jacked during that scene. However, when test audiences saw it some of the parents/moms were concerned that the Prince looked too naked. So they reshot the scene to make it look more similar to the animated movie. It's a pity because while it might sound a bit weird, it could have been a very different, original version of the transformation. (Source: some interview with Dan Stevens that I saw online)

FUN FACT: In the Broadway show, the Young Prince at the beginning is actually played by a member of the Ensemble. When the Enchantress throws the fireball and transforms the Prince into the Beast, there's a blackout. The Ensemble playing the "Young Prince" runs off and the main "Beast" takes over. Also, one of the show's original cast members the Late Merwin Foard actually wrote a special backstage song that the Ensemble would sing for fun while waiting in the wings dressed in their finale costumes. It's actually really funny. Basically it would go..... HIS LEFT ARM'S OUT HIS RIGHT ARM'S OUT HE THROWS THE BEAST MASK UPSTAGE AND THEN HE TURNS AROUND AND HE'S TURNING INTO JESUS, AND HE'S TURNING INTO JESUS, AND HE'S TURNING INTO JESUS, AND HE'S TURNING INTO JESUS, AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHH!!!! Also if the transformation cherry picker is broken, the actor playing The Beast actually does a modern dance which was created by Terrence Mann. It has has happened several times on Broadway and in some of the international productions.

I was the Beast double in a community theater production about 10 years ago. In our production, the transformation at the beginning - Prince to Beast - was achieved by the Double, me, hiding in a specially built corner of the set, and emerging at a specific light and pyro cue, while the Prince actor disappeared in the same manner. I also fought Gaston up until the death scene and, thanks to how the set was built, was hooked to the fly rig over an obscured trap door, and then was hoisted and spun and “sold” the illusion. I was finally lowered through the same trap door while smoke and lights and perfect timing allowed the Prince to reveal himself. The audience bought it EVERY SINGLE TIME. I never went out for curtain calls or to meet the audience after, so we never gave the illusion away.

This brings back memories for me but I was a part of an amateur youth theatre production of Beauty and the Beast (the Broadway musical) and like on Broadway, we had a body double for the fight scene with Gaston but that body double continued on to do the death scene too as our actual Beast was offstage in his prince gear saying the lines and when it came time for the transformation, a smoke machine started creating this technicolor haze so the body double could rush off and the prince come on and dash into the place instead. It was a good idea in some cases but then again, some audience members could see him running on 😂

Dan is the only man I think could play both beast and prince.

I am allergic to scented candles but I just have to say I really respect how extra the ads have been in the last few videos.

When I saw the Broadway musical as it was staged here in Buenos Aires the 2nd time, the effect of the transformation floored me, I had no idea how it was done, it was amazing. I can't believe this movie turns 30 this year, it remains my absolute favorite still, thank you for providing content for it, it seems Disney isn't doing much of that so far, maybe they do something later on. Also, that Tokyo ride is absolutely fantastic, can't wait to see what they do in the DisneySea expansion!

I did Beauty and the Beast in high-school so I have a real soft spot for the rougher transformations. LOL! Great video, Dan!

I absolutely adore the transformation music in Beauty and the Beast. To this day I cannot think of of a more triumphant and beautiful sound for that moment.

The Beauty and the Beast ride in Tokyo's transformation scene actually has the Prince animatronic on stage with Belle after the Beast pepper's ghost goes away ;) when the beast starts spinning, prince pops up through a trap door/ elevator in the floor, with his movement covered by the pepper's ghost illusion :)

On Disney On Ice, when Gaston gets exploded on the Disneyland castle, it's just the star and pixie dust at the beginning of every Disney movie!🤣🤣🤣
