Just curious - Does anyone think there was a change more significant than putting the engine in the rear? If so, what change and why is it more significant?

Probably to improve handling and to save weight (an engine placed in the front would require the car to have a drive shaft along the length of the car to get the power to the rear wheels, since f1 cars are RWD).

1st is midship engine like you said. 2nd might be carbon fiber structure or side pods.
