This is the classic go to example for evolution in most relevant textbooks and presented in classrooms across the country. The question I would ask is what did the moths become? The simple answer, they are still moths. They started as Biston Betularia (peppered moths) and became , drum roll please.... Biston Betularia. There was no new information. Sure natural selection favored the one over the other but no new features were produced, no new information in the DNA resulted. In fact, Biston Betularia are still the same moths, identical in all respects to those populations studied more than a century ago. Natural selection may be able to explain survival of the fittest but it fails miserably because it can not explain the arrival of the fittest.
@ByRachelTaylor2 жыл бұрын

But how exactly does the moth change its DNA? Still have not seen/heard an explanation for that.
@mountkamu2 жыл бұрын
The actual DNA isn't being changed. All that happened is that there were already two varieties and when the trees turned black, the dark moth was just better adapted so it was eaten less and could reproduce more. Over time most of the population became the dark variety. The opposite happened when the trees looked normal again.
@junodonatus4906 Жыл бұрын
DNA changes in an individual first, through mutations. This creates genetic diversity and physical diversity throughout a population. Natural selection then acts upon this diveristy favoring those better adapted to the environment. Some genes (for traits) die out while others are selected to get passed on. In this way the gene pool of the population changes over time (generations).

Can this happen with humans?
@Schmopit3 ай бұрын
In theory, any species can evolve in pretty much any way, given the right circumstances and enough time. There are reasons that this change could happen so quickly, the main one that moth's have a relatively short life cycle (around a year). This allowed the species to keep up with the rapid change in their environment. So, could humans could rapidly evolve to blend in with a sudden environmental change? First of all, predators do not present a meaningful threat to us as a species. Even if that somehow became the case, we not rely on camouflage as a defence to any substantial extent, so it would mean evolving a whole new trait. Our life cycle is a relatively long one also; it takes a human around 15 years to reach sexual maturity. So if the survival of our species was suddenly made entirely dependant on a significant, rapid change to our phenotype such as this, we would likely face extinction. Humans are highly adaptable, including to rapid change. However, our ability to do so is no longer necessarily dependant on evolution through natural selection. We previously evolved the means to adapt to a wide range of environments and circumstances; our large, uniquely complex brains, and incredibly dexterous hands. When faced with new challenges, we can conceive of, and construct new technologies to allow us to rise to the occasion. If anything, our physical traits have "de-evolved" as we came to rely on them less and less. When compared to other great apes, we are physically weaker. Our skin is thinner and softer, we have less hair, our teeth are smaller, our bite force is lower and so on. What we have instead is clothing to keep us warm and protect our skin, means of preparing food to make it easier to chew and digest, and weapons to fend off attackers and bring down prey. Humans today have successfully adapted to a wide range of environments; high and low, hot and cold, dry and wet etc. We did so by making suitable clothing, figuring out the best ways of harvesting, preparing and preserving food, building structures to protect us from the elements. These technologies and methods are passed down through memetics, or culture, rather than through genetics. Genetic changes did happen, but they are very slight and gradual.

It’s still the same species. Slightly different DNA. The Theory of Evolution makes a jump in logic by believing that a species will evolve into a new species. That involves a chromosomal leap… which is impossible.

What's a chromosomal leap and can you prove evolution requires one?

That is not a proof for evolution but for simple selection of pre existing life forms. Both moths colors existed before that industry factor came in. Then one color dominated because of changed ecosystem conditions. If people back then would have known about the complex chemical processes for changes at molecule level they would not have put up such simple and old theories in the first place. DNA coding, its translation and especially Protein folding, which is also the basis for creating colored moths is much, much harder than is told to people. It is about time to correct and update those old narratives. The moth did not develop suddenly a new color because of changed ecological conditions. In truth the color already existed before hand. The same goes for bacteria, when they survive against radicals. It is because they got that ability of variable properties in the first place. Otherwise they would just die. A common error is also made when simple observations like above are scaled up unconditionally to much more complex organisms with way more dependencies. In truth a human being is clearly not like a bacteria but even more complex. On the basis of modern scientific knowledge, it is a much more satisfying and logical explanation, that Life has been engineered and did not come into existence by chance. The insane amount of needed propabilites coming together by chance to uphold the evolution theory do not make any sense but sound more like science fiction than real science.
@junodonatus49063 жыл бұрын
"The insane amount of needed probabilities coming together by chance to uphold the evolution theory ...." The probability argument assumes a known outcome. When you do this, the probability against that outcome goes up astronomically higher. For example, the probability that I win a lottery drawing tonight vs the probability that someone will win. The first has a slim chance of happening and the latter is certain. Neither we, nor any known life form, had to turn out the way it did (the form it is in today). Therefore, calculating the probability that a human or a whale would come into existence has no bearing. In addition, evolutionary change doesn't happen "by chance." The only aspect that is by chance is genetic mutations (which can increase allele frequency and diversity among a population). Yet, unlike a Powerball drawing, these mutations aren't selected to be passed along by chance. In Powerball, each ball has an equal chance of being chosen. When it comes to the change that a mutation can bring about, THAT is selected for or FAVORED by unique environmental circumstances. So, "chance" is incorrect. Again, if one mutation is selected over another due to it's survival benefit then that is not selection by equal chance. Therefore, your protests are based on misconceptions.
@aladdin86232 жыл бұрын
The point is not about conditions to which one race and species does survive, while the other does not. You don't need evolution theory to observe such a simple fact. But Modern ET goes beyond Darwins simple theories nearly 200 years ago by assuming fantastic self development of total new organs and abilities and genetics of high complexity by a mere chance. Today reality shows, that building new proteins in the needed exact form is impossible to do especially under fast pacing survival conditions. It is impossible for a moth to suddenly adapt and build total new peptide chains for a new color needed to survive. There hasn't been a sudden mutation. Both moths black and white have existed before. There hasn't been a green colored, brown or stone colored moth of exact that species. But there should be according to ET. The lack of billions of tries and errors so to speak are a proof against the ET, as Darwin himself has postulated in his works by the way.

@@ByRachelTaylor I used to be a kind of militant atheist type highschool-early college. I feel embarrassed about it and sometimes engage with religious stuff in an approving way because I feel like I was mean or something. Anyway I found this passage in an old book "Darwin on Trial" which is perfect for this video and my confusion regarding evolution: "Much confusion results from the fact that a single term - "evolution" - is used to designate processes that may have little or nothing in common. A shift in the relative numbers of dark and light moths in a population is called evolution, and so is the creative process that produced the cell, the multicelullar organism, the eye, and the human mind."
