GreatNorthernDad IDK Brett is a lot better at sight reading :/ as I’ve said many a times they are at a similar skill level. So, I'm learning guitar. I was recently reading about the key of D. Apparently the set up of the violin strings (G, D, A, E) lends it to playing and composing in D because it allows you to use open strings comfortably. This is why so much violin music is in that key.

@jackdomanski67585 жыл бұрын
GreatNorthernDad What an exceedingly ignorant comment. The Second Viennese School, including Webern, did not want to upend any tradition for the sake of it. You are simply regurgitating century-old propaganda about the decadent boogie-man Atonalism. Read Schoenberg’s own words. He was a conservative (with a messiah complex) who revered the Austro-German musical heritage. He called himself a Romantic. Berg was much the same. Listen to the heart-on-sleeve emotionalism and romanticism of the Violin Concerto. The music is not far removed from the late style of Mahler.

Alban Berg's method is dodecaphony, avoiding the rules of conventional harmony. The notes relate only to each other, not confined to any key. If you want to get the hang of it, start listening to partly tonal composers such as Bartok and Stravinsky, then move on to Shoenberg and Berg. To make the process less painful, listen to the same piece over and over again until your ear becomes accustomed. In no time you will no longer be an "uncultured swine". Enjoy.

I really want Brett and Eddy to make a video about modern "classical" music. Concertos and symphonies composed within like the last 20 years. They could explore what it means for music to be considered "Classical" and highlight some of the more renowned composers of our own lifetimes. Nobody seems to do that. Everyone always focuses on works by long dead composers, and it can feel dismissive and condescending of our current generation at times. As if we are no longer capable of composing music worth playing.

Well I'd wager that's because modern classical music pales in comparison to stuff that's far older. Like honestly when I go to the symphony and they have some modern stuff before they play Tchaikovsky or Beethoven or whomever the crowds have really come to see, it just doesn't really compare, it's almost to the point that I don't mind being late if it means I can skip the modern piece. Some modern stuff is good, but most of it is overwhelmingly unpleasant, for whatever reason they've decided to go the route of "atonal" music and what not despite us having centuries of works that don't even approach such a thing because by it's very nature it's unpleasant.
