To paraphrase the late Rabbi Lord Jonathan Sacks Z"H Science tells us how things work. HaShem tells us what things mean.
@jagnestormskull3178 Жыл бұрын
Science does have limits, in that it can only study what humans and our tools can observe. That does not mean that you can choose not to need air to survive, or choose not to stay on the ground, because the laws of science aren't about choice. Engineering, how we harness the knowledge gained from science, is about choice, whether or not you believe that current theories need to change is a choice, but the laws of science, discovered or undiscovered, are always being followed by the universe and as a part of that universe, we are always following them. The new frontier of science is quantum gravity. There are a number of debates within that subject, and we do not know what the laws of quantum gravity are, but the consensus among the scientific community is that they exist and we just haven't invented the tools to observe them yet. Science has not yet reached its "outer boundary" as you call it. We are still trying to study "WHAT IS," as you call it. As for the distant past, we can observe it and in-fact observe it all the time because of the Cosmic Speed Limit, the speed of light. We observe the formations of "new" stars and "new" planets all the time... except, that happened a long time ago. The origin of species, biology, is the theory of evolution. The theory of the origin and formation of the universe is astrophysics, a theory of formation. In an astrophysical context, "birth," "death," and other such terms are metaphorical. You also didn't cover things like carbon dating, fossils, and the skeletons of other members of the _Homo_ genus. Or genetic mutation in microbes, for that matter. I am a man of Jewish faith, but that does not mean that I force myself to reject science. I don't have to "believe" in scientism, the belief that HaShem can be replaced by science, because humans can use tools to observe things. I understand that science can only study what it can observe, but Darwin's theory of natural selection holds up to that observation.
@Nai61a Жыл бұрын
jagnes etc: I like a lot of what you say, but your reference to "scientism" is unworthy. What do you mean by it? It is usually a term employed by "God"-existence claimants who want to believe that there is some kind of "spirit" dimension, "something out there" or the "supernatural". They want to tell themselves that the physical, material world - and its emergent properties - is not the whole story. I have yet to encouter one such claimant who could defend her/his position seriously. "Gods" are invented. As the young say, they are a "cool story, bro".

Charles Darwin started out attending Seminary, and was preparing to become a minister. He only tried to disprove God's existence, when his young daughter died, and he became mad at God. But to get mad at God, you have to be convinced God is there. A person who is completely convinced there is no God, he spends no time pondering the subject. Scripture says not to worship an Idol. However, if a curious primitive in the middle of a jungle, who sees a soda bottle get thrown out of a small plane, and then, he starts to worship it, God can deal with that, he can work with the still curious, because the guy is looking for God and divine wisdom. God cannot help a religiously brainwashed person whose mind is closed and then he has the gall to worshiping a piece of wood that he carved himself. When Jonah was mad at God, the divine wisdom could still work with that. When Charles Darwin got mad at God, the divine wisdom could work with that too. And the Darwin Theory has spawned much research into whether the divine wisdom exists... But... God can work with that too...

I think everyone is trying to prove what they believe from only one aspect of creation. The first chapter of the first book of the Torah, Bereshit, is a statement that Ha Shem created the universe, nothing else. It does not explain how or why he did it. The Torah is not a book of science. It is up to scientist to discover how Ha Shem physically created the universe, yet this doesn't explain the greatest question of why. The Kabbalah, especially the Zohar, explains both the how and why of creation. This is just an over simplified theory that would take volumes to delve into by men of great learning which I am not. The Torah was given around 3,500 years ago before advanced mathematics, astrophysics, paleontology, geology or advanced science had been discovered. Even today, with all of the advancements in science, man hasn't even scratched the surface of the knowledge needed to start to unravel the mysteries of creation. How could the people living 3,500 years ago begin to understand anything we have discovered recently? I've read that before the world was created, Ha Shem looked first into the Torah as a guide. Since every Hebrew letter has an equivalent numerical value and everything in the physical world has its beginning in mathematics, is it not realistic to say that he used evolution as a part of creation? To think the universe was created on its own is like dumping truckloads of building materials on a job site and thinking a house can be built without first being designed by an architect and built by craftsmen. The universe is too vast, to majestic, too complex to have been created without a creator. I have to run. My chickens are pecking at the door demanding food or my head.

It seems to me that this rabbi puts choice and freedom above trying to understand the real nature of the world, how it works and how can we work more harmoniously WITH the world rather than against it. His ideas are from another, much older time when even Christians had the idea of conquering nature, subduing it to our command. Didn't he observe during the lockdowns over the last 2 years that nature is far more powerful than even the strongest, cleverest humans; we achieve more by working together with nature and we do that by trying to understand her true character; nature always wins, always. When the last human on this earth has departed nature will reclaim what has always belonged to her. Furthermore, the recent vaccines are a product of the discoveries made because of adopting the principles put forward by Charles Darwin so this rabbi can continue to live and give his talks. We are at polar opposite ends of these prepositions.

Ecclesiastes 1:16-18 Though I said to myself, “See, I have greatly increased my wisdom beyond all who were before me in Jerusalem, and my mind has broad experience of wisdom and knowledge,” yet when I applied my mind to know wisdom and knowledge, madness and folly, I learned that this also is a chase after wind. For in much wisdom there is much sorrow; whoever increases knowledge increases grief.

This is just an old man pontificating with ignorance and embarrassing himself. B"H Excellent definitions of words, and their proper usage... but, as science is often dealing with predictions, it often does deal with what is not, and in order not to be misused, it must include the such terms as 'projected', 'hypotheitcal', and 'modeled'. There are limits to the accuracy of the methods of extrapolation and modeling, but when developed by knowledgeable and skilled scientists of integrity and good-will, these methods can save many lives by accurately predicting situations which could/would prove fatal without intervention. In a sense, they are still dealing with what 'is' because the extrapolations and models are built upon existing empirical data describing evidence or sometimes even proof of what has already happened, and existing rules, or laws, of nature, providing that the scientists can accurately identify those laws and discern when and whether those laws always operate, or when/whether there are anomalies, which would be evidence of other laws that exist, which they have not yet identified. But, not to disagree with an excellent talk full of veractiy, science deals a lot with what is not, especially with situations and outcomes which are not, yet, in order to obtain the most desirable outcome. The process of identifying laws of nature and thus modifying outcomes as time goes on is one kind of imitatio Dei, a way in which we seek to be like G-d, because to some degree we can learn to create something out of nothing... but in the end it's all according to His rules, using matter and energy that He provided, and, to some degree, brains that are plugged into His own wisdom, and hoping for a good outcome regarding those factors that appear random, but actually operate according to laws we have not yet discovered, and are under His control. To some degree science deals with that which is not, when experiments are done and technology is developed to deal with a feared threat that has not yet come to pass, and indeed may never come to pass. An example would be to travel to remote places to obtain specimens of a zoonotic virus to experiment on it to see how much manipulation it needs to become transmissible to humans, in order to be prepared with a vaccine lest that virus somehow evolve, in nature, in that remote place, into a pathogen that can be transmitted to humans and cause in us transmissible disease. Such an outbreak never happened, before this series of research projects, and it seems highly unlikely it would, but this type of research was actually done (and, yes, I have met scientists who actually think this way, who are so afraid of unlikely and unrealistic outcomes that they authorize and enforce solutions that are far more dangerous than that hypotheical threat that had never come into actual fultillment) and this is the rationale given when the research on developing that virus into something that can affect humans is done with insufficient safety precautions, and it is this thought of trying to prevent something that does not exist, and doss not have a high chance of ever existing, that serves as a defense for such researchers when it would be very easy for many people who are adversely affected by harm that the research incidentally caused, to consider the research to be deliberate development of a bioweapon, not simply of one country against another, but of a handful of powerful individuals against the rest of humanity. So, scientists get in trouble when they are preoccupied too much with what doesn't exist, and don't indentify and address the harms that really do exist, prevention of which they could learn to achieve. Nevertheless, I do apologize for diseenting, but I do think science is often dealing with what does not exist, and in exactly that way becomes an activity of imitatio Dei, seeking to create something from nothing. Just, when such scientists are misled, they do not project, ultimately, as imitatio Dei, but quite the opposite. The mad scientist becmoes an instrument of harm, and tragically winds up making nothing of something... like those who took Einstein's invention, which he initially worked on in order to be able to provide people in general with free energy so they could be more free from workto follow more G-dly pursuits, against his will, and used it to develop the nuclear bomb. The city called HIroshima was something... and then suddenly was nothing. Heav'n spare us from such scientists, as those who misused what they were given! The war was won due to this? So the history books say, but how many other wars will be shown to have been lost? Like the war to achieve decent behavior, to kill only the guilty when kiling seemed to have become a necessity... Imitatio Dei means to seek to create, not to destroy.

On your veiled references to COVID and the lab-leak theory: SARS developed in the wild, it is not conjecture that another zoonotic virus will exist. You claim that the laws of nature are under control of some Male Entity, when maleness is a attribute of mortal biological organisms. Your model of the nature of laws is founded on a contradiction, and has no evidence for it that could not more easily be due to something far simpler than a sentient non-mortal mortal being.

I mean there is a reason it’s called a “theory.” Just like how the Big Bang THEORY is a theory. Here’s the definition of a theory: a SUPPOSITION or a system of ideas intended to explain something, especially one based on general principles independent of the thing to be explained. Or a set of principles on which the practice of an activity is based. Or an IDEA used to account for a situation or justify a course of action. obviously you’re not educated in common English lexicon, so take your advice. Stop.
@joes56933 жыл бұрын
@@moshe6096 This is just crazy. That’s not what a theory is in science. As in cell theory and atomic theory. A theory contains laws, there is nothing higher in science. Only after a multitude of tests, scrutiny and constant results can something be called Theory. So yes you’re absolutely wrong for using the common vernacular. When someone says it’s just a theory they’re already telling us too much about their level of study and ignorance on the subject. So please correct your errors.

@@joes5693 Actually when attributed to the Big Bang Theory you’re wrong again. The definition of a Scientific Theory includes “In circumstances not amenable to experimental testing, theories are evaluated through principles of abductive reasoning.” Abductive reasoning is not absolute and is circumstantial. The Big Bang theory can not be repeated and evolution also can not. With evolution we can look at fossils and such but again it’s a scientific theory that is not absolute unlike cell theory.
