Thank you for this, a very useful video. I bought the same kit, but mine is different, the part that attaches to the hood no longer has that tiny clip that has to be removed and put back again in order to lock the struts, it is a similar plastic part to the end that sticks to the front pin, so much easier in my case. It works really really well and since our eNiros here in Portugal don't have the heat pump (hot climate) it was even easier to remove the original stand. Perfect, just made an awesome EV even better :)

@@EV-olution It's been very reliable (well apart from the engine seizing shortly after I bought it when it was only 5 years/80,000 miles old so I had to put another in - a 1994 Xantia engine, upgrading to turbo in the process). Since that massive fail it's been very good which is why I still have it. The engine is now almost 200,000 miles and the van 160,000. I'll get a new one within the next couple of years either because someone finally makes a decent-range van or I build one myself.

Thanks for the very helpful video - and the one on the frunk (froot in the UK ?). Removing and replacing the clip looks the safest way , but the instructions do say that fitting the ends does require 'some force'. Perhaps the clip is designed to deflect temporarily as the associated ball end is forced in.
@EV-olution
@EV-olution 2 жыл бұрын
Actually the clip on the ball end is simply to hold it in place. If you ever need to remove them (like I did because I forgot to grease them first) you have to pry the clip up to allow the ball to come out.

Just saw this one (and your quickie update video). I have a 2020 Niro EV, and, unlike yours, mine does not seem to have anything that would interfere if the struts were attached using the "aft" bolt position (the front bolt that is furthest from the front bumper). Do you think that would avoid contact with the hood that you later discovered? Also, in the quickie update, you said you would add a thin rubber strip to the hood, but would placing the rubber strip on the strut have the same effect? Thank you! I agree this is a nice upgrade for not much $$!!
@EV-olution
@EV-olution 8 ай бұрын
Since I no longer have my Niro EV (I moved up to an EV6), I can't go look at the stut bolt positions so I don't know if the other bolt location would interfere/touch, or not. I can tell you that I used a mallet and very slightly flattened the spots on the hood that were touching the struts, and I added some very thin rubber squares to those spots. I never had issues with them. I am glad my videos could be helpful and thanks for taking the time to watch.

How are you now FULLY closing the bonnet, do you have to press down on the bonnet? Before the struts were fitted the bonnet would fully close by dropping it from about 6" away from the catch
@EV-olution
@EV-olution 2 жыл бұрын
I have always brought the bonnet down gently, then pressed to click it shut, like I do in my video. The difference with the struts is that there is a bit more resistance when pressing, but nothing terrible. I have also tried the "slam" test and I can "drop" the bonnet and it will close even with the struts installed, it just takes more effort, hence the reason I use the gentle press instead.

I think, and correct me if I’m wrong the 64kw battery charges up the 12 volt battery so there has to be a inverter to do this. I was told that the 12 volt batteries primary purpose was to switch the isolator that turned on the 64kw battery and that is why the 12 volt battery was so important secondary was the 12 volt lights ect. Those struts are really good value, I bought a Frunk and a set of struts from the same company in Europe the struts were quite a lot more expensive and there was a delivery charge.
@EV-olution
@EV-olution 3 жыл бұрын
I did not want to get into all of the specifics of the 12V battery, this is a very simplified explanation, but yes, there is a DC to DC inverter that maintains the 12V battery by using the power from the high voltage battery. There is also an option in the menus of the instrument cluster to disable the feature, which is completely stupid since that would let the 12V battery go flat.

A few people have been caught out with a flat 12v battery. I just wonder why an EV cant have a small alternator to keep the 12v battery topped up?
@EV-olution
@EV-olution 3 жыл бұрын
Most EVs have a DC to DC inverter that uses power from the high voltage battery to maintain the 12V battery. The Niro EV, Soul EV, Kona Electric and Ioniq Electric have 12V battery maintenance as a feature, so in essence an electric car has an "alternator", it is just a different device. The issue is that, just like a gas car has to be running for the alternator to charge the battery, an electric car has to be turned on for the 12V battery maintenance feature to work. As an added benefit of the EV, the 12V battery maintenance mode also works when the car is plugged in to charge, making it better than a gas car in this respect (one in a list of many advantages).

I wonder about the 12v battery. Instead of having it why not convert the high voltage battery down to 12V and use that. In fact Niro 2020 does exactly that in the utility mode, strangely though you can't drive in that mode so I was thinking that there must be some other reason but I am not clever enough to work out what it is :)
@EV-olution
@EV-olution 3 жыл бұрын
FYI, the 2019 also has Utility Mode, I have used it quite a bit. I think not having a full DC to DC inverter set up comes down to cost savings. Kia used the same 12V system as the "regular" Niros instead of having to create a completely new system with electronics and software required. This is speculation, but makes some sense.

@@daveiwhittle I have a mini booster pack that I bought at Costco (80$) in my car because I have a dual dash cam setup that runs in parking mode, 24/7, and I don't drive often due to COVID; after 5 or 6 days not driving, or starting the car, the 12V goes flat and I have to jump it 🙄 even though I have the battery maintenance mode turned on. Battery maintenance only kicks in when the car is started, or if I remotely activate climate control, or if the car is plugged in. So I am with you on this one more than you know. I think the new EV platform will have a system without 12V, the E-GMP that the new Ioniq 5 will use, as well as all future Hyundai/Kia EVs. At least I hope they delete the 12V battery.

David, I think because of the UVO services and the cellular electronics it would be preferable to have a 12 volt battery. Perhaps in the case of an accident the high voltage battery maybe disabled for safety reasons and the 12 battery allows the cellular UVO service to operate for emergency services and also allows lights and flashers. Although a converter would work, there must be some reason to not remove the 12 v battery.

Can I ask for some information on this engine. Looking to see if the cooling fan runs continuously when the ignition is on or the motor is running? Also does the cooling system get warm like a conventional engine
@EV-olution
@EV-olution 4 ай бұрын
Since the Niro EV is fully electric, and the electric motor does not get as hot as a gas engine, the cooling system does not come on until the components heat up enough to require it. This includes the motor, inverter, reduction gear, battery. In the winter you may never hear the cooling system come on, but you will hear the heat pump. In the summer, even when it is hot and the cooling system kicks in with the fans, it is still relatively quiet, especially as compared to a gas car. I hope this helps and sorry for the late reply.

Thank you very much. Yes, I have a the Canadian SX Touring with LED headlights. I think there is more going on that just the headlight assembly, ie electronics that control it all. Hi there! Good job! I installed the same things on my Kia Niro 2017 HEV, as per your link for Hyundai Ioniq 2016-2019 (short version). I want to warn your potential followers and subscribers about the much more complicated process of installing these pieces. The result is also not as good as yours, they are too strong for a light hood, and therefore closing the hood requires some effort. I'm not saying that the hood itself is somewhat deformed. This fact makes me think about uninstalling these shock absorbers. Please give me a link to your version as much as possible. Thanks in advance!

I bought a pair of similar struts along with an after market frunk, from frunk.at/ and the specific page for the Niro is here: frunk.at/en/pageId9/ . So now when I pull up to a public charger, I simply pop the hood, and I've got my charging cables right there without having to go dig in the boot. I've also put a pair of gloves and my emergency kit in the frunk, as well as reflective vests.

In North America the charging pistol and cable are part of the charging station so we don't have to take anything out of the car when it is time to charge. I always thought the Frunk was a great idea but I never saw the need for it since there is plenty of storage in the Niro, but now that I have read your comment I realize that you need to take out the charging cable from your car every time you want to charge! If I was in Europe I would definitely have a Frunk for the cable.

@@EV-olution Correct, on fast and rapid chargers, there is a cable attached to it, but for a slow charger (level 1 or level 2) at a shop or office, or at a friend's house, you'll have to bring your own cable.

Good job; unrelated question: is it possible on the eNiro to deactivate the rain sensor on the front windshield, so as to be able to run the interval wiping in manual mode with regard to the speed settings. Thanks to anyone for a helpful answer.

Thank you, I appreciate it. My 2019 does not have a rain sensor for the front wipers and I was not aware that the 2020 e-Niro had one.

I just learnt something new. Auto front wipers is an option that is not on all versions sold. My 2019 top trim has everything, but that! Here is what the 2020 e-Niro manual says: The rain sensor (A) located on the upper end of the windshield glass senses the amount of rainfall and controls the wiping cycle for the proper interval. The more it rains, the faster the wiper operates. When the rain stops, the wiper stops. To vary the speed setting, turn the speed control knob (1). If the wiper switch is set in AUTO mode when the POWER button is in the ON position, the wiper will operate once to perform a self-check of the system. Set the wiper to OFF (O) position when the wiper is not in use

@@EV-olution well, mine (2020) has it, so I’m trying to find a way to deactivate it. Thanks anyway!

@@maesc2001 yes, and that is why my last post has the instructions from the manual for the 2020 to let you know how to turn it off. If you set the wipers to the off position, according to the manual instructions above, the wipers will not turn on. If you set it to speeds 1, or 2 they will only go at the desired speed. See section 5 page 98 and 99 of the 2020 PDF version of the 2020 e-Niro English manual. That is where I copied and pasted the information from in my last post to you above.

The week I made this video was a rough one. I made so many mistakes when making this video, including forgetting to change the filter on the lens of my Canon, which made 95% of the outside footage so dark that the preview in my video editor is black. I was able to salvage it, but the video quality of this one is pretty bad. Oh well, live and learn... don't make a video when you are burnt 🙂

Sorry you don't like me, my style can't please everyone. As for why... in the winter at -20C when I need to fill the washer fluid (several times per winter) this is a very useful upgrade. Also, for those in Europe where the L2 charging stations do not have the cable attached, people store the cable in a frunk that can be added to the Niro. Very useful for many people, but if you don't have a use for it that is fine because you get to save 40$ and 15 minutes. Thanks for watching.

Hi from Ontario! It's interesting that my 2019 Kia Niro Hybrid SX Touring does not have a 12V battery, but it does have a spare tire under the trunk space. I was considering getting the Niro EX PHEV and wonder if I should have but I still love my car.

Thank you for the comment. I did not know that the Niro HEV did not use a traditional 12V lead acid battery. After a bit of research I found that you have a small litium ion battery under your seat. Here is the text from the article linked below. "instead of using a regular 12-volt battery for starting the car and powering the accessories, Kia decided to install a small lithium-ion battery underneath the rear seat, alongside the hybrid system’s 1.56-kWh battery pack. If the small battery runs out of juice, the owner can simply press on a dash-mounted button labeled BATT RESET, and the bigger battery will transfer a portion of its energy to the smaller one." www.guideautoweb.com/en/articles/41669/2017-kia-niro-the-troublemaker/
