Where to Find a Fundamental Education in Art

Ive been studying the fundamentals of art for a year now, and I can safely say I wouldnt be at my current skill level if i skipped them. A lot of what i learnt is thanks to channels like this one. No wonder there are people insinuating only a few selected people can become artists because they are "talented". No one is born with the ability to draw, its through learning fundamentals and being MINDFUL about them that are gonna make you better. And if you ever feel like you stop improving, then I would suggest returning to the fundamentals to patch up where you are lacking, where you cant build because there is nothing to build on

YES!! So true! It is so easy to think that we need to learn something more advanced in order to break through the next level, when in reality, what we really need is an advanced understanding of the basic fundamentals. Thanks for sharing! ~ Daniel

I met someone last month who left Art School here in Adelaide because they didn't teach her to draw, just expected her to already know how to do it. My Mum went through that same program, and yes, she could already draw. I applied myself, and to get in you had to show your drawing expertise. I did fine as my Mum had taught me, LOL I actually wanted to get into Art Teaching (which I did) as that's my interest. We did have one particular lecturer that was helpful, but thinking back, a lot of it was how to draw a tree, mark making and the like. There's a place for that, but's it's more at the level of buidling basic dexterity and confidence skills - that yes you can do something with your hands, go exploring beyond that now. As Kevin describes, there's so much fragmentation in the curriculum - this lecturer or that one, learning what they feel is useful, rather than a streamlined plan to build skills... I can tell you, what I recommend is the Evolve Artist program to everyone from tweens to people who have always wanted to paint by never thought they could. That 'talent' myth is strong out there and reinforced on the daily. I talk to people saying it's just skills you can learn, they'll turn around and say "You're so talented", it's quite frustrating actually...

In my Junior year in High School, Independent Study Art...the Teacher taught me how to stretch my own Canvas on frames, so, I did two 30"x40" pieces, primed them 4 layers, then later plopped down a case of Oils and Acrylic Paints with Brushes, then said....now use your imagination, etc. Later years, there was an offer to purchase each pieces at $450 each....didn't do it, then several years later sold at $1000 each. I was an absolute beginner in both Oils and Acrylics in High School.
