This song is all about money and the pursuit of it. It's about how ignoring your internal warning signals to accumulate wealth is corrupting. '...whispering into my eardrums... telling me that I want more' - pursuit of wealth 'you wake up just head and shoulders in a glass jar' - the car you drive and its reflection of wealth (the side view of a driver through the glass window of a car = head and shoulders in a glass jar) and how there's nothing more to you than the things you own, hence the word 'just'. '...there's something wrong but it's okay if we're still getting paid' - benching morals / concerns in favour of wealth 'you're ravenous you're champing at the bit, just a cog next to a cog next to a pit' - people are ravenous to secure wealth but fail to see the inevitable 'pit' that the constant thirst for wealth leads to. 'Cog next to a cog' is also structured in a machine like way - the organisation of 'cog next to a cog' reflects how cogs actually function in a machine, side by side by side. '... no more solace in arrears' - explicit reference to money; it's not good to be in debt, but being in debt demonstrates that you've spent money, and for the wealth-obsessed there is solace in this fact.

A cop hits you, what do you do, call the cops? '...there's something wrong but it's okay if we're still getting paid' - given up trying to fix the problem, so yo tell yourself alcoholism is a terrible problem, but it is okay if it hasn't affected my job (I've told myself that that lie plenty of times) 'you're ravenous you're champing at the bit, just a cog next to a cog next to a pit' - anxiety will make you pretty ravenous, let me tell ya. Also, when you've drunk yourself into a stupor and you feel nothing, like a zombie or an emotionless cog in a machine. You're basically just going through the motions at this point. '... no more solace in arrears' - debt will make you do anything to forget about how much life sucks 'I'm coming alive" - God it feels that way when you get your next drink. At this point, you're no longer drinking to get drunk; You're doing it to feel normal... like you exist.
