A hilt? It is called a cross guard. The hilt is more commonly known as the handle of the weapon. On a lightsaber, if you didn't have a hilt, you would be holding just the plasma blade, and you would vaporize your hand, unless you used the force to handle it. And also, you need the hilt to project the blade.

Obi-Wan does speak the truth about the cross-guard. Its less effective. More risky to use. And is restricting of movement. You can't really apply a realistic perspective (a.k.a martial arts perspective) with this convoluted saber by doing any flurries or anything else interesting. I feel the fights in the next three movies will stink since they dont have that amazing choreography which made the prequel fights just insane! Clearly they don't have another Ray Park or some other experienced martial artist or stunt coordinator.

+John Titor I personally felt like how it was only used to burn Finns shoulder kinda ruined the whole mysterious cross guard he has. Like I was expecting it to be there to actually have defensive techniques but it was used for the obvious reason of pure attacking purposes. its also like a double edged blade where it can damage the wielder if Finn proved to clash back harder at the sword lock. I just hope episode 8 cleans up what was not explained in this episode. I certainly do not want to read a book that will no longer be cannon again in the future. my points may seem invalid but I guess I was expecting so much more from an awaited sequel to a movie from 30 years ago. it still does look cool though but very hard to twirl with like he did in the movies

hikingbird42 Hang on. If you expected it to function defensively, shouldn't you be surprised that it was used offensively? You really can't call something ''obvious'' if you didn't expect it... I thought pretty much everyone had the same reaction. When we first saw the design, everyone was talking about how it would stop his hands being chopped off during a duel, but the movie surprises us..and I think most had that ''ohhh makes sense'' moment. I don't know, I'm glad they decided to be bold and make a new design, It has already become iconic. lol Ya I can't wait to see SW8 too. A lot of questions left unanswered. I hope it's just as good as good or better than 7.
