It’s so heartbreaking that Disney had the entire original cast, John Williams, and three stories by George Lucas and they completely blew it. That was a once in a lifetime opportunity and they just blew it.

Lucas gave a peak at the original 1978 or so ideas to a few people back in the day. I remember Han was supposed to die in ep 5 or 6 leaving Luke and Leia (not his sister) together. Luke kills Vader at end of original trilogy. Luke's sister was not Leia. Luke was to learn of her and seek her out and train her in ep VII. Leia ends up leading her people (Survivors of Alderaan) The Emperor and other Sith at his command are the primary villains. Luke and sister confront and kill emperor. Spidey the mandalorian uses some elements from the original trilogy like Jabba’s door camera eye, Boba Fett, Ig88, the creature that assaulted c3po, and the western theme to the show. +Matt Otter I think the original trilogy, indiana jones and this deal with disney is a testament to him knowing EXACTLY what he's doing. Despite whether we enjoy it or not, the prequels were his ideas, his stories. Granted, he could've done something much different like spread out more creative control, not directed it himself, etc, but he did. Lessons were learned, he certainly learned them that thats not what his fans wanted from him or his stories, and now we have disney doling out star wars instead of Lucas. And Lucas could've been a nasty fuck and told disney to go fuck themselves, but he knew exactly what he was doing, what he wanted from the deal and sold it. Movies are a form of art, they're a representation of what the creator sees and is trying to convey to us. The prequels were a testament to the fact thatnot everyone understands the definition of art as well as that not all artists know how to properly convey their artistic views (overuse of CGI, terrible directing, horrible script, etc. etc.) Lucas knows exactly what he's doing, and what he's done.
@VoLCoMzYaDiGG9 жыл бұрын
But thats coming from a directorial, producer angle. He's a terrible director, a terrible script writer, etc. His ideas are pretty much all represented, the originals were a space opera, the new ones are space operas, t's literally following his plans. Not to the T but still loosely based on the EU. There are sons involved, fathers, daughters, wives, etc. It's all there. Except instead of it encompassing a bunch of characters, shady dealings, backdoor meetings, or things like that, it's focused on a small group of people. And thats one major issue the majority of people dislike regarding the prequels. He directed A New Hope and everyone loves that film. It's what started the craze to begin with.
@Core11389 жыл бұрын
+John Doe A New Hope was a disaster and was only saved in the editing room. Everything that had always been great about Star Wars has been because of others; George Lucas can only truly be credited with the germ of the idea.

And I don't mind the special editions. The only change I ever really had issues with was the Hayden Christiansen Force Ghost. Most of the changes don't last long, and MANY actually improve the movies. The x-wing effects are better for instance. If you're pissed about the availability of the Original versions for purchase, GO BUY THE LIMITED EDITION DVDS! They have the special edition and the theatrical version of the movies. @THEAP19958 жыл бұрын
+Joshua Foley I'm not saying that the Special editions are better. They ultimately are unnecessary, but the fact is that THEY DONT RUIN THE FILMS! They are still Star Wars and if you think Greedo shooting first ruins Star Wars, You are the problem. Not Lucas. No he didn't need to change anything, but he did because he wanted to make his original visions of certain scenes and improve certain effects. No, they don't always work, but never ONCE did I watch the Jabba palace dance and think "WELL STAR WARS IS RUINED!" And attacking a man for expanding on his own material is petty and stupid. Mans it's not like you can't buy the originals. Like I said, go on Amazon and buy the limited edition DVDs and just toss out the special editions if you're that against them, but at this point where the originals are readily available and you still hate the guy for the special editions and Prequels, you are just bitching.

At the end of the day, The Force Awakens is just a rehash of A New Hope. It's a very well done rehash, but it's a rehash nonetheless. If George Lucas would've written it, or at least had a hand in writing it, I have a feeling it would've turned out completely different. He's the type of guy who likes to move forward and explore new ideas, whether that be for better or for worse. The minds behind Force Awakens on the other hand, played it safe. Everyone loved the first Star Wars, so they'd surely love this one too. So even though The Force Awakens turned out to be pretty great, I can't help but wonder what it could have been like with Lucas at the helm. The first two prequels may have been a mess (the third was actually very well done in my opinion), but that doesn't necessarily mean the same would have been true for his latest installment.

@TheGreatGodPan7 жыл бұрын
They really aren't, people only seemed to suddenly decide they were awful a couple of years or so ago when it became trendy to whine about jar jar and watto being "racist stereotypes"... The main problems of the prequels really is the CGI, cheesy dialogue and the odd silly plot part (and the "all out monster battle" bit at the end of ep. II). Even the CGI though impresses a lot of the time, it's more the excessive reliance on it for portraying aliens that gets tiresome (the new ones are no better in that respect)

That was until I saw the commercial to Episode 1. It looked AMAZING, and I had to see it. I heard that it was a prequel, which means even though I didn't have to see the originals to understand what was going on, Episode 1 still made me want to see them first. So I did, and I've been a fan ever since. If it weren't for the prequels, then I would never have become a Star Wars fan, so I will never be a Lucas hater as so many have become, and I'm sure I'm not the only one who feels that way. I loved the prequels. I saw them as a kid and remember learning from them. There were stark images of children being thrown into situations they can't truly understand the complexity of, but still being subject to the judgment of adults. Still being subject to the selfish desires of those adults too. It had a lot to it. I thought Jar-jar was crazy and showed that skilled people being led around by a sort of fool can be problematic. It showed the sensitivity of cultural differences, and different groups attempting to bargain with each-other. Yes, he employed a massive amount of CGI, but he did it well, in my opinion. I believe he responded to a need in the market. The CGI was top notch at the time. As a kid, the pacing felt fine. I suppose as an adult, it can be too much. Watching Annakin transition from a hero to a villain was interesting too. I guess I'm saying that it felt more appropriate for kids, and he secured a generation of fans from that point forward.

I can't believe how many people are hating on his prequels just because George took the Star Wars franchise into a different direction by introducing many new worlds, cultures, peoples, and characters. While many hate the effects, I think it's done pretty damn nicely. It was the 2000s FFS of course these effects were not up to par with those of later movies. Besides, never have we seen ground battles (attack of the clones) in such grand scale in the prequels. Yes, I did hope George would use more practical effects in the prequels but the special effects were no where near abysmal, like many "fans" claimed. Again, he did Star Wars so much justice that I do not believe his work should be disregarded so hastily.
@tomnorton42777 жыл бұрын
George used plenty of practical effects in the prequels. They were just blended into the CGI and pretty damn well too, considering most people can't tell what's CGI and what's practical in the prequels.

The CGI was very good for its time and was needed to help create new worlds and creatures. Also without the techniques George Lucas and his team developed, CGI wouldn't have advanced to the level it's at now. Just ask filmmakers like James Cameron. Besides many of the effects in the OT don't hold up particularly well and in some cases they're actually worse - puppet Yoda for example has nowhere near the same range of movement or expression as CGI Yoda and the space worm in TESB looked and moved like a giant sock puppet - but because they're in the OT, people don't complain about them.

The biggest problem of the prequels is the writting, which is credited for. It's bland, dull, and with little sense of direction or emotion. He did not understand how emotions work or how to portrait the motives of the characters. Often in the prequels, characters will say their emotions out loud, or wrestle with which emotions are appropriate to the situation. Anakins outburst after he buries his mother is one those moments. We are meant to see heartbreak and anger, but Lucas chose to direct Hayden into a more whiny and misunderstood. These are good actors as well. Samuel L Jackson is such an exciting actor and is given one of the dullest characters in Stat Wars. I would forgive the CGI if it wasn't for the horrible script and boring direction.

If Lucas wrote TFA, it could have been about the New Republic and the New Jedi Order duking it out against what's left of the Empire and Palpatine's Inquisitors. Now THAT would have been a sequel, not this A New Hope clone we got that ruined everything our heros have done in the originals. The prequels are better than TFA and TLJ. At least episode 1 and 3 are. TFA and TLJ aren't even actual Star Wars films IMO. They're just some space saga with the name "Star Wars" slapped on the front. See this guy on this island? Yeah, that's Luke Skywalker, I promise you he is because I named him that. Sure he doesn't act like Luke Skywalker at all. Sure, Mark Hamill said he completely disagreed with what Disney did to Luke, but yeah that's Luke Skywalker. I promise. See his name tag?

No the TFA and TLJ aren't Star Wars films at all. They're cash grabbing space sagas with the name Star Wars slapped on the front. They're entirely different universes.

Funny thing how my boyfriend for the first time saw all the 6 Star Wars movies before going to see The Force Awakens, and without knowing much about the movies and the HATE the prequels get, we saw the blu-ray versions and he was impressed of how awesome the old ones looked, but he adored more the prequels. He said Episode I was like a copy of A New Hope, since in both a Jedi Master die and there's a space battle at the end where something is destroyed, and funny thing that then The Force Awakens is very much like A New Hope too. Anyway, after he saw the first 6, he said that both episode II and III were his favorites 'cause they had more action and had more tension and intensity in the scenes. And that people, is called an opinion without nostalgia and it's an unbiased opinion. If he saw the movies 20 years ago, and then the prequels 10 years later while reading the internet, he could have gotten his brain washed by the internet and haters. But no, he liked the prequels more, and to be honest, I like them more too, 'cause the first ones are mostly only about Luke, but the prequels are more about the whole Star Wars universe, I liked all that stuff about the Republic, the Senate, and so many aliens, planets and stuff, it felt like a huge universe I wanted to explore and be part of it, it was not only about a boy and his daddy issues. But yeah, funny how many of us like the prequels more since we don't care about nostalgia, but the hate is so disgusting, if I was George, I would have not sold SW and I would have made the next 3 episode however I wanted, I don't understand, you don't tell a singer how to sing, or a musician how or what to play, or a painter what to paint, yet these haters want George Lucas to do his creation the way THEY think it should be, ungrateful idiots!

When I watched it for the first time I had the same reaction as your boyfriend. But when re-watching it, I noticed some silent and magical atmosphere in the first three 4-6. And have come to appreciate them more for their depth and philosophical critique against tyranny. I think this was another part of Lucas his genius: the newer movies, the prequels, represent exactly the world it is in: advanced, densely populated and very active. Much like our society: work, work, action, family, daily life of a ruling class and shallowness. Whereas the originals had that quiet, suppressed feeling. Like a generation born in North Korea. Combined with the longing to old suppressed beliefs, meaning.

Now, if he really wanted to make changes, he should have released the theatrical versions simultaneously.
@connernickerson55098 жыл бұрын
He should never have given up star wars. He should have made episode 7 as a thirty year continuation from episode 6. All of the crusty cynics on the internet might hate me for it, but I honestly believe that the New Jedi Order, a story about a massive, hostile alien invasion rife with action set piece potential, is exactly the kind of story that Star Wars fans could have latched onto. In addition, the 2 billion that The Farce Awakens made could easily have been equaled with an action oriented apocalyptic take on Star Wars, and I think that Rogue One will vindicate my views on this. If it makes a tone of money (and it will) that will prove that the public is willing to go to a star wars movie that is primarily focused on the grit of warfare and strife...

@connernickerson55098 жыл бұрын
JD Marshall Persuasive argument, except for one thing...the Farce Awakens was most certainly NOT a great film. A great paperweight...sure, but its hamfisted plot, pedantic and shallow characters, laughably unintimidating villains, abolition of the canon, blatant and entirely inexplicable and unexplainable violations of the laws of physics (even by science fiction standards) as well as a slough of pathetic cameos makes it the worst film in the franchise, while the pulse-pounding action, beautifully resurrected cgi characters, heartbreaking ending, and creatively evocative score make Rogue One the single best Star Wars film ever made, and no amount of writer's block sewage that Jar Jar Abrams plops out of his lens-flared orifices will ever change that. At any rate, I was saying that, before TFA was even produced, that is the direction they should have gone, exactly like Rogue One, but with the older, original cast...make a gritty war film. You know, like Star WARS?! :)

That's how creative and perfectionist people are. They are hardly ever satisfied with what they do, even tho is very good, now imagine watching someone else doing it. Is hard. Is a natural process. Now all those whiny ass pimple faced 100kg fat criers can suck the third trilogy so up in their asses and be happy about it. We all get it, the dialogues were bad. But at fuckn least we were watching STAR WARS. People who hated on prequels are so crossed within their selves, they even cross with the teachings of the way of the jedi, master yoda and so with the star wars universe, the very universe itself they are going crazy in love with. The only thing people had to say was, "magnificent star wars demonstration George but fix the script plx dialogues are lame dont do dis again ty", but instead people bashed and hated on the prequels. That is what you get when you go full hate, suffering, pain and a third trilogy named disney wars the magic awakens/ the last unicorn/ god knows what shit. It's not about family problems. It's about two words: STAR WARS. If you ignore the WARS part, then it becomes necessary for someone else to make movies for "THE FANS." What's up with that ridiculous "white slavers" comment? What an idiot. The reason why we loved him and now can't stand him is that sometime after Last Crusade and Willow, he went crazy. *EDIT:* For anyone else who wishes to continue arguing with me that George Lucas understands Star Wars and its characters more than the fans, I have three words for you: *HAN SHOT FIRST.*
@kizwiz69 жыл бұрын
+stevethefishdotnet Well then why is the new trilogy also focused on the Skywalker family? ie Ben Solo being Han and Leia (Skywalker)'s son, and then Rey potentially being Luke's daughter... Kathleen Kennedy even said it's revolved around the family. So even without Lucas and his script, it's revolved around family problems (especially after the big ending of TFA).
@stevethefishdotnet9 жыл бұрын
Kieran Emery No, the point is (and this was also addressed in the documentary "The People vs. George Lucas") is that Star Wars, at its base, is a space opera about wars set in space. _NOT family drama._ Star Wars did not become a cultural phenomenon because it was a soap opera. It's not As The World Turns; it's Star Wars. All this talk from Lucas about how Vader was always Luke's father and Leia was supposed to be his sister from the beginning has been proven to be a bunch of crap. Ben Solo is just a progression of the story that has been established. I would have been very happy if this new movie did not revolve around Darth Vader's grandson.
@kizwiz69 жыл бұрын
stevethefishdotnet The original title for Star Wars was "the Adventures of Luke Skywalker". Just because fans interpreted it different doesn't mean it was intended as such. But tbf, you are right. Those ideas about Vader and Leia relation to Luke weren't apparently mapped out from the beginning. Nevertheless, there's new anthology films (Rogue One, Han Solo spin off, etc) focusing on expanding the universe beyond the family, but it still primarily focusing on the family lineage. That's the central piece of the main films - just not the universe in "Star Wars". It's like in Harry Potter - the books/films are focused on that character, but the world isn't (hence the new film coming out called 'Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them').
@manchegocheese85299 жыл бұрын
The Star Wars saga - which is an important distinction to make as the standalone spin-offs approach - is absolutely about family. Central to each episode is a member of the Skywalker family. Central to the fate of the universe is a Skywalker. Their stories, their issues, drive the saga.
@stevethefishdotnet9 жыл бұрын
Manchego Cheese But that is how it _came to be._ Darth Vader was originally a pupil of Obi Wan's who killed Luke's father. He was just a villain antagonist. He wasn't written to be Luke's father until Empire. And the "another Skywalker" was supposed to be Luke's sister who had yet to even be introduced. Lucas made Leia Luke's sister after Episode 5 to provide a simple resolution to the love triangle once Gary Kurtz gave up and left. Lucas' talk of "it's all about family" is what he came to make it in retrospect, but it is not what it was originally meant to be. If you know the history of Star Wars, George Lucas and Gary Kurtz had originally set out to make a Buck Rogers movie, didn't get the rights, and so they made their own space opera, tentatively titled "The Adventures of Luke Starkiller." I don't know if you guys are under the age of 30 and grew up with the lame prequels or whatever, but this is how Star Wars originally came to be. The original cut of Star Wars was a disaster, but was salvaged due to skilled editing, groundbreaking special effects, fantastic sound design, and an incredible soundtrack. The "family" thing came later and for those of us over the age of 35 may remember that Lucas had even admitted that he had no plans for episodes 1-3 and much less 7-9. All that had been established is that Obi Wan defeated Anakin on a volcano. And let's be honest: Episode 1 didn't even have a main character. The main character in the prequels should've been Obi Wan. And when you take the "wars" out of Star Wars, that's when you get endless babble about trade embargoes, senate disputes, and constant boring conversations featuring people sitting around on couches. Lucas's vision of Star Wars didn't work. That's why others are in charge of it now.

Poor George. The man was just tired from building an empire, and in his 70's, he did what he thought was the right thing to do, pass down the inheritence of a legacy so that more could come from it in his absence. I agree with Simon Pegg when he said that he doesn't really respect people who think the prequels are good. They're not. They lack all of the qualities that made Star Wars great, and I think they represent Lucas being the victim of his own success. In making the originals, he worked with other writers (even on A New Hope) and directors, and had a strong producer to push him in the right direction. He clearly wrote and directed all three prequels on his own, and all through the process was surrounded by yes-men and sycophants who praised his genius. That isn't how great films are made. He should've done the story treatments and then brought in great writers and director(s) to adapt them. Eh... now I'm rambling...

It must have been a devastating betrayal to realize that the continuing stories he made with the same love & compassion as the other 2 trilogies was simply tossed in the bin as soon as the ink on his buyout check dried. @@Orangeninja5000 Rey being a woman is not the problem most people have with her, in fact Bastilla Shan, a female jedi/dark side user combo in Knights of the Old Republic, is one of the most popular characters in the fandom; not to mention Ahsoka Tano. The problem is that they feel Rey rarely struggles compared to the previous main characters. It’s a complaint I somewhat agree with. Having Rey defeat what we at the time thought would be the main villain in the first movie was a mistake, at that point she did not have a major obstacle to overcome, she already won and beat the bad guy in the first act. Even Snoke is killed by Kylo in Last Jedi, and she kills Palpatine in what is clearly the best SW movie to date in the movie he came back in. People’s complaints about her in that area are justified. Regarding Luke, I actually did not have much of an issue with him in Last Jedi, though I don’t like how they killed him off (in other words, they should have let him actually go and fight at the end, not project what is in essence an advanced hologram) Even if I disliked how Luke was handled, it’s imo at least not as awful as how they handled Kenobi. I will never agree with the idea of utterly trashing who is supposed to be the main character of a show, solely for the sake of propping up those around them. At least they let him actually be Obi-Wan Kenobi in the last episode.

The Force Awakens shouldn't even exist. That's why Lucas is so upset. If the Sith returns and the Force is not balanced after Anakin, the Prophecy is wrong and there is no Chosen One that can bring balance to the force. I'm not saying there shouldn't be another Star Wars movie, but they could have gone back in time, or made an origins film about Yoda for example. By making another movie that was exactly like the 4th, they ruined the whole story in my opinion, because they take away Anakin's importance in the Star Wars history. I think that's why Lucas is so upset, he has claimed that Anakin/ Vader is what Star Wars is about. Shame many people didn't seem to care and loved the movies anyway.
