EWS Rotorua Full Highlights 2019 - Round 1

Rotorua, set in stunning New Zealand, opened the Enduro World Series season.
Riders attacked five stages today, three of which were set in the famous Whakarewarewa Forest and other two in the Mountain Bike Park at Skyline Rotorua.
Isabeau Courdurier (Intense Mavic Collective) and Martin Maes (GT Bicycles) dominated to win battles in Rotorua.

Jayseal ENDURO - Ravanel is injured (spine), which was mentioned in this video I believe. Richie Rude decided not to race due to the pending doping allegations that are under investigation (announced via instagram). What’s weird to me is that he registered for this race...? Kinda odd to me.

Can someone please exaplain to me why they call this enduro world series when it basically involves little to no up-hill sections? Might as well just call it downhill world series, no? I'm genuinely curiuos, I just do not understand this. Thanks in advance!

it is similar to downhill but you have to ride to the top of each stage and that is a lot of climbing throughout the day , also the dh stages are normally longer then normal dh courses some can be 15-20mins long like the whistler top of the world trial

Bigcubefan That’s right. In the pro categories you actually have a certain amount of time to get to the next stage. That time however isn’t included in your overall time.

Even if they always have to paddle back up hill (I see they sometimes get shuttled, so it's not even all the time), then why in hell is that time not relevant for the overall placement? Why include only the downhill time? This makes zero sense to me.

@@Bigcubefan it's not a cross country race! It's a format that emphasizes the downhill sections. The riders have to get to the top of the stages within a certain time or they are penalized. The time limit can be quite tight so it's not just ambling up to the top. There wouldn't be much point showing them climbing the fire roads as it would be boring as hell. So it is essentially a downhill race (on smaller bikes) but the riders have to get themselves to the top of the hill by their own power within a set time limit. (The format is a lot like rally car racing)
