@@spms3018 most therapists have credentials. As someone with an hons degree in Psychology and a Masters in Behavioural Science I dont believe he was trained or legitimate at all. He was unqualified, unsuitable & had no relevant experience to warrant such an advisory role to any couple, imho. I dont think that anyone sane or pragmatic could ever say that JS was just a bit eccentric & making excuses for philip by claiming there was some kind or rational or logic reasoning behind it is irksome because he was hardly a bastian of morality himself. No one should simply excuse the royals behaviour because their circle was limited. The background checks would have revealed previous suspicions, immediately extricating him from suitability to be counsel to anyone in the RF. The very fact that therapists are mostly very discreet, unassuming and would not be prone to seeking publicity should have made that an easy decision to make, regarding an interest in couple's therapy.

My own mother grew up in Bournemouth in the 1960's, Savile owned a flat there, and she clearly remembers all the kids were warned about him back then! Find it VERY hard to believe that the DofE didn't know of the rumours surrounding Savile, it's simply not plausible. The most important question is _"The rumours HAD to be known, even if they couldn't be proven, so why was he allowed to get so close to No10 and the royal family?"_ and that doesn't automatically mean that those who knew were abusers too. In fact my own feeling is that he was allowed such access to power because the elites didn't think what Savile was doing was much of a crime......and probably still don't. Oh, and I would love to see this "compelling" evidence that the McCanns were not involved in the disappearance of their daughter, especially considering the way their story changed in the first few hours. To my knowledge there has never been a scrap of evidence to suggest that Maddie was abducted. Maybe the real reason why people are so adamant that the McCanns were involved is because of the number of times they've been caught lying!

Great interview. I think there is a lot of value in doing a timeline and going back to childhood. I listened to an interview with JS which was one of the last ones before he died. It is worth listening too, he used double speak and dropped hints into the conversation with a smirk. He was asked about his childhood and he made reference to being poorly as a child and the family doctor had given up on him recovering and wrote out his death certificate and left it one the side. He mentioned that some weeks later and the family doctor came back and said you are still alive. I thought that was quite key as he was written off and against the odds he survived. This could have set him a mind set that he was invincible as he was given the worst diagnoses and still survived against the odds at a very young age.

All I heard about Saville at the time was that he was a womaniser and preferred much younger women. Then more and more there seemed something fishy about him and then Louis Theroux made a documentary about him for a series where he shadows somebody famous and tried to dish for dirt on him but got fobbed off by Saville. I thought Theroux was being too inquisitive at the time. Then after Saville's death it all came out and Theroux then blamed the viewers for believing them. I saw in an interview were they talked to Jimmy Savile about his mothers death. The host asked him why he spent 5 days alone with his mothers body after she had passed away. Knowing he was a necro I wonder if thats what he was doing to his mothers body?? I dont believe he had the best relationship with her. She beat him a lot as a kid. I can remember in the 60s while I was still at school in Ireland seeing an article in one of the Sunday papers about saville trying to pickup young girls in a mini van. I don't know the details but there was even a picture of him in the van prowling around. I believe there was more about the case the following Sunday and then there was no more. Think I was about 10 so around 1967.

I worked at Thames TV and the 'rumours' in the late 80s were that he was a necrophiliac .... I was in my 20s and I dismissed them at the time as there were many rumours about a number of entertainment providers (this was the worst).....I now know not to dismiss rumours and believe that many other tales were possibly true and I worked with people who witnessed other demented behaviours amongst celebrities, not so horribly disgusting but the late Bruce Forsyth and Benny Hill need some investigation. There are some very well known others who are much younger and now in their 50s who were at the very least 'inappropriate' in their behaviour personally to me as a 20 something personally and probably many others as well but they didn't commit crimes in my view at the time, they just pushed their luck....I won't disclose their names but people need to realise that the Entertainment Industry in the UK (it's not confined to Hollywood), particularly Television in the 80s and 90s was absolutely rife with inappropriate behaviour and I am sure there are many stories other than the ones I know of....

Then information came out about Cyril Smith as well and two police detectives signed to the case to investigate him did a lot of desk research and interviewing people and were just writing up the reports when a higher up burst into the office and demanded all the information they had on them. Because of the confidentiality in their work the police detectives couldn't make photocopies to sneak out to somewhere safe at home or elsewhere. David Steel was one of those instrumental in the cover up. Then it was all made official in the book Smile for the Camera by Simon Danczuk who was the MP for Rochdale at the time.

Great interview Shaun. It's just a pity we didn't live in this world decades ago. I was one of the many children who was abused. By my step father, in the late 70's and early 80's, in just about every way except sexually. I was born in 1975 and in those days things were different. I was physically attacked by three different infant school teachers, so had no where or no one to confide in, as my mother just didn't care. I believed it has contributed in creating the person that I now am today. I believe that if Savile was still alive today he would be going about his life unpunished! "It was good while it lasted" I believe if he was still alive today, he'd be free and able to continue to go about his sick depraved life, simply because of all the dirt he had on so many people in high places.

Great interview! Shaun is the greatest interviewer I have come across. And very impressive guest. I loved it when he said the nature/nurture elements that might exist in the offender are of no interest to him because we all make choices. Could not agree more! It is getting very tiring, this trend of psychoanalyzing criminals to bits and trying to find this or that cause for their character and decisions. All that - besides being not even quasi-scientific - to in the end inevitably conclude: yeah, he bumped his head, or was abused in childhood, but not everybody bumping their heads or being abused becomes a criminal. Ugh. Ok. Very helpful. There is such thing as evil and we might not know what it is, but inventing meaningless causes and categories helps no one. Except the psychologists and psychiatrist and the cohort of experts that live off this, of course.
