Thanks for the video! Honest question here with no ill intent behind it, in a market such as this where employers can get hundreds to thousands of applicants for a job within days, especially with the advent of AI plugging up the pipelines, do you honestly feel that recruiters are able to look at each applicant? I’ve worked with talent acquisition teams and with them being so swamped and understaffed due to layoffs, I find it hard to believe there is no screening tool utilized at all. I’ve heard from some teams that they have some sort of way to quickly screen applicants or I’ve seen recruiters out on LinkedIn that they might not even look at all applicants unless they have a referral. What are your thoughts about that? Many thanks again for the video! All things are nuanced so I appreciate your perspective 😊

Thank you for your thoughtful comment. You raise a valid point about the challenges in the current job market. To clarify, most ATS systems are built on legacy codebases, which means they cannot effectively utilize AI for filtering resumes. Additionally, using AI or algorithms for resume screening would go against various regulations, such as those enforced by the Office of Federal Contract Compliance Programs (OFCCP) in the United States, which mandate fair and non-discriminatory hiring practices. In many cases, recruiters are overwhelmed and understaffed due to layoffs. I've spoken with several hiring managers who are now screening resumes themselves because so many recruiters have been laid off. For example, OFCCP regulations state that all resumes must be screened by a human eyes in order to make a decision of moving them forward in an interview process or being rejected. Some companies also turn to agency recruiters to fill in the gaps, though this can be more costly than retaining an in-house recruitment team. I've noticed an uptick of recruiter openings which is a good sign that the job market is starting to turn. We are in a tough job market where there is a flood of qualified candidates and as I mention in the video what's more important is when you apply not if you apply. Applying to a job early will greatly increase someone's chances of having their resume seen and not just sitting in a queue. A very good friend of mine is at the same leveling as I am (Director of Recruiting) and he is shocked at how bad the market is. He got a referral from the CEO of an incredibly popular company (can't tell you what it is but they have a seriously cute mascot) and even that couldn't get him an interview. Yes, it's a rough market but not impossible. I appreciate your question and the opportunity to provide some insight into these nuances.

When you ask an interviewer if there's anything standing in the way of them hiring you, what you're doing is asking them to think about your negative qualities at the very end of your time with them. You are shifting their perspective on you to something negative, and even if you get the chance to attempt to address their concerns, you're going to have to do it perfectly to overcome that shift in perspective and leave on a positive note. The suggested alternative of asking if there are any additional questions or elaborations is a great way to address things that might already be at the forefront of the interviewer's mind.

Hey Farah, This video was super useful for me. But can you make a video on approaching recruiters through linkedin or mails. I have finished my engineering course and looking for a job. As a recruiter I think you will be the right person to answer such doubts!
@Farah_Sharghi4 ай бұрын
Glad you liked it! TBH I would focus more on finding roles that are appropriate for you, aka New Grad roles. Recruiters get pummeled with InMails all day and you'll get lost in the shuffle. Plus, you need to apply to the jobs to be considered. As a new grad go to job fairs that your campus is hosting, there you'll find recruiters who you can talk to and you can hand them your resume. Good luck!

For the last piece of TikTok advice, you said, "Instead of saying/doing this, say/do that." I thought that was helpful, and the format made it clear of the shortcomings of the TikTok advice. Could you make another similar video where you tell us what to do contrasted with what not to do?

Why it is illegal to post jobs which doesn't exist ? Sometime companies do. I always do check if company is legit. If it is going into liquidation there will be something online or just check what is in the register about that company. Never apply without checking registry, never rent without checking registry, never buy a car without checking registry.

Thanks for your comment! I appreciate you sharing your thoughts on this topic. As someone who has worked as a recruiter and hiring manager for over a decade, I can definitely relate to your concerns. First off, I want to clarify that I’ve never posted a fake job. In fact, companies that work as government contractors have to follow strict guidelines from the Office of Federal Contract Compliance Programs (OFCCP), which makes it risky to post jobs that don’t exist. You’re right that some companies use “evergreen” job postings. These are roles that they are always looking to fill, even if they aren’t hiring at that exact moment. It’s a way for them to keep a pipeline of candidates ready for when they do need to hire. It’s unfortunate that some companies might post fake jobs to collect resumes or create a false sense of growth. That can really hurt their reputation and trust with job seekers. For job seekers, it’s always a good idea to do your homework. Checking a company’s status, looking at the posting date, and verifying contact details can help you spot any red flags. It’s important for all of us in the hiring space to be transparent and ethical in our practices.

@@Farah_Sharghi you should do a video on ghost job postings and how to navigate that. From what I have read, apparently 40% of job postings are made for jobs that don't even exist!!! (Aka, the company never had any intention of hiring someone for that role). And from what I have seen, 40% seems like a legit number.
@Farah_SharghiАй бұрын
@@ulizez89 I struggle with this because there isn't real data out there to support that this is happening on a broader scale that this is a problem. If you do the math of actual numbers provided by the government it doesn't add up at all. However, some companies post evergreen roles which I can talk about and those can be considered to be 'ghost jobs' because they may not be hiring or they may be hiring for 15 positions. I worked at a place that did this and I was HORRIFIED! The roles existed but they were all over the place. So I overhauled everything which the eng department hated (because I made hiring manager actually do their job when it comes to hiring) and then they became the envy of the rest of department because we hired amazing people and had beautiful, diverse teams filled with people who looked like the people who used our products. A well designed hiring process works when companies want to adopt it. It ends up costing the company less money, they get incredible talent who are happy and who stay 😄

most of the recruiters only asking why do you have career gap? When I checked they have career gap too. I am always honest but I will try "tell me about your gap first? please"
@arnolddezilva43884 ай бұрын
I guess we have all gotten oblivious to the fact that sometimes we aren't just suitable for a role or even more that there are better candidates. Everyone seems to be eager pointing out flaws in recruiters and in the process. However sometimes there is just someone better than you at this point of time. Doesn't make it indefinitely just means you need to pick up on the skill sets. I'm a 40 year old who has decided to career transition into tech probably in the worst possible time . However I still have the belief that it is possible . All we need is that first door to open. Keep the will strong .

you really need to double check the meaning of 'halo effect'

The Oxford English Dictionary defines the "halo effect" as a cognitive bias where an impression created in one area influences opinion in another area. For example, the positive perception of an individual's specific trait can lead to an overall favorable judgment of that person's other unrelated characteristics.
