Ex-GRU Officer explains Putin’s Nuclear Threats | Conflict Zone

Few Moscow foreign policy & defense experts are more well-connected than Dmitri Trenin who left the Russian army as a military intelligence colonel and went on to head the Carnegie Moscow Center until it was dissolved in 2022.
Trenin, who spoke to Tim Sebastian from the Russian capital, says the Kremlin sees the war in Ukraine as an "existential" fight and that Vladimir Putin's nuclear threats need to be taken seriously. Much of the Russian elites sees the conflict as a proxy war with the United States and its NATO allies. Trenin says many issues could have been resolved before the Russian invasion on February 24, 2022, but tragically were not.

Tim has done an excellent and clever journalistic job. Resisting the temptation to debate, a good interviewer like him manages to lead the interviewed person to express all his arguments, whether they make any sense or not. Tim leaves to the audience to listen and decide. Well, yes, current regime has a history of power consolidation by starting the war outside of Russia in order to trigger a sense of unity in Russian nation but this time around there is more to it. Visible even in this interview. But still, operation keeps dragging on, not going as planned, too sluggish, so yes, from Russian view it was a mistake. Problem is current political leadership in Russia usually solves such mistakes by refusing to admit that the original failed idea come from the top levels of political chain of command. But in here they have a problem. Ukraine does not want to partake in spreading such narrative now. And well, things this time around got out of hand on much larger scale than Russia planned, so taking a step back to close this chapter for Russia is going to be harder than such things have ever been for Russia. This horrific war in Ukraine all goes back to the Budapest Memorandum on Security Assurances which provide security assurances by its signatories relating to the accession of Ukraine to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT). In 1994 the memorandum was signed by three nuclear powers: the Russian Federation, the United Kingdom and the United States, in which they agreed, in return for Ukraine giving up it’s nuclear arsenal, the World’s third largest, to Russia, it would receive: 1. Respect the signatory's independence and sovereignty in the existing borders. 2. Refrain from the threat or the use of force against the signatory. 3. Refrain from economic coercion designed to subordinate to their own interest the exercise by the signatory of the rights inherent in its sovereignty and thus to secure advantages of any kind. 4. Seek immediate Security Council action to provide assistance to the signatory if they "should become a victim of an act of aggression or an object of a threat of aggression in which nuclear weapons are used". 5. Refrain from the use of nuclear arms against the signatory. 6. Consult with one another if questions arise regarding those commitments. Russia broke that agreement in 2014 when it invaded Crimea, but the UK and US did nothing at that time. Now, finally, in 2022, when Putin invaded the whole of Ukraine; the UK and US decided to honour their obligation, with the help of NATO. I recommend the Vlad Wexler channel to those who haven't watched it. He made a point that it was existential for Putin's regime (and his vision of Russia's future) to have a successful, Westernized Ukraine. Sooner or later the regime comes under threat and then having an alternative example of governance in a people that are considered essentially the same was too close for comfort. It's bad enough in Poland, the Baltics, etc., but "unbearable" in Ukraine. So to your point, I agree it's not existential for Russia, but it was existential for Putin's dark vision of it.
