Few Moscow foreign policy & defense experts are more well-connected than Dmitri Trenin who left the Russian army as a military intelligence colonel and went on to head the Carnegie Moscow Center until it was dissolved in 2022.
Trenin, who spoke to Tim Sebastian from the Russian capital, says the Kremlin sees the war in Ukraine as an "existential" fight and that Vladimir Putin's nuclear threats need to be taken seriously. Much of the Russian elites sees the conflict as a proxy war with the United States and its NATO allies. Trenin says many issues could have been resolved before the Russian invasion on February 24, 2022, but tragically were not.

A great joke I heard A Russian woman turns to her husband and asks “Who are we fighting in Ukraine” Her husband turns to her and replies “We are fighting Ukrainian facists, The United States and NATO” “How are we doing?” She asks “Well we’ve lost 100k of troops, most of our advanced tanks and other equipment has been destroyed or captured. Over 20 generals have been killed, our economy is being crushed due to sanctions and there is talk of nuclear war and full mobilization.” “Oh my god.” The wife replied before asking “What have NATO and the US lost?” “They haven’t arrived yet.” The man replied.

If you were the leader of a country you would invade as well. They arm those weapons they can destroy Russia lol. This war is strictly on the UsA 🇺🇸. I gotta laugh when people point fingers at other countries about war crimes. Go read the leaked wiki files from Afghanistan how our military was gunning down innocent civilians in Iraq with AC 130s. Or Edward Snowdens CIA file dump on all our war crimes in other countries including election interference as well.

If you wnat to kill time you might do a little mental exercise and ask yourself: how could I ever prove my innocence in any court of law if being acused about a crime I didn't commit I would live in a perfect world in which lawyers argue only for someone who they are certain is innocent but refuse to argue for someone whom everybody else consider as someone totally guilty of a crime in question?

Well, yes, current regime has a history of power consolidation by starting the war outside of Russia in order to trigger a sense of unity in Russian nation but this time around there is more to it. Visible even in this interview. But still, operation keeps dragging on, not going as planned, too sluggish, so yes, from Russian view it was a mistake. Problem is current political leadership in Russia usually solves such mistakes by refusing to admit that the original failed idea come from the top levels of political chain of command. But in here they have a problem. Ukraine does not want to partake in spreading such narrative now. And well, things this time around got out of hand on much larger scale than Russia planned, so taking a step back to close this chapter for Russia is going to be harder than such things have ever been for Russia. But yes, it's about time Russia did something in this regard. But surely it feels more alone than ever this time around.

Totally true, the excuse of Ukraine being a NATO member falls down seeing how much Russia has ignored Sweden and Finland aplications (well they throwed some vague threats). It’s about regime preservation, it’s not about Russia, it’s about the way the Russian elites perceive the country. They want to keep that cleptocratic, totalitarian closed regime, that fits really well to the oligarchy and restricts the population.

This horrific war in Ukraine all goes back to the Budapest Memorandum on Security Assurances which provide security assurances by its signatories relating to the accession of Ukraine to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT). In 1994 the memorandum was signed by three nuclear powers: the Russian Federation, the United Kingdom and the United States, in which they agreed, in return for Ukraine giving up it’s nuclear arsenal, the World’s third largest, to Russia, it would receive: 1. Respect the signatory's independence and sovereignty in the existing borders. 2. Refrain from the threat or the use of force against the signatory. 3. Refrain from economic coercion designed to subordinate to their own interest the exercise by the signatory of the rights inherent in its sovereignty and thus to secure advantages of any kind. 4. Seek immediate Security Council action to provide assistance to the signatory if they "should become a victim of an act of aggression or an object of a threat of aggression in which nuclear weapons are used". 5. Refrain from the use of nuclear arms against the signatory. 6. Consult with one another if questions arise regarding those commitments. Russia broke that agreement in 2014 when it invaded Crimea, but the UK and US did nothing at that time. Now, finally, in 2022, when Putin invaded the whole of Ukraine; the UK and US decided to honour their obligation, with the help of NATO. If they had honoured the agreement in 2014, then this terrible war would probably not have been started.

He made a point that it was existential for Putin's regime (and his vision of Russia's future) to have a successful, Westernized Ukraine. Sooner or later the regime comes under threat and then having an alternative example of governance in a people that are considered essentially the same was too close for comfort. It's bad enough in Poland, the Baltics, etc., but "unbearable" in Ukraine. So to your point, I agree it's not existential for Russia, but it was existential for Putin's dark vision of it.

Why should Russia be at risk of losing more troops and equipment via the hands ion the US and NATO, and other countries of the world ? So far Russia has put up with it. @Dany Varna yes I do support invading country because I'm from Europe and we invaded Iraq killed over a million innocent people most of them were women and children's .now because of our selfish reason we use ukraine as a puppet to win the war against Russia and not sacrifice any of our own soldiers we just supply weapons and watch the showdown.putin killed few hundreds innocent people in ukraine but he will never be able to beat our million kill streak in Iraq for that reason compared to Europe I see putin like an angel hopefully he wins the war and world will change from the West being in power.people just might stand up against the West after this war it will be good for all of us, sometimes we need to sacrifice to get a good result ukraine is our sacrifice.
