When Mat said the bit about people learning English due to RuneScape, that described me. I was YEARS ahead of my class due to this game. I was able to speak, read and write English before we even got English classes in elementary school. The game defined a huge portion of my life and who I am today, and I am still a proud player!

1:10:35 It got me interested in software development. I remember I used to design forums boards for my friends and fellow clan members back in 2004 when I was in 5th grade. Runescape has had a large impact in my life. Met some amazingly smart people while playing Runescape. Don't think I will ever forget the first time I logged into Runescape and discovered what a MMORPG was, and just feeling lost, amazed and excited all at the time upon discovering this amazingly well put together world of Runescape.

@@LV9_x You’ve made some good points, albeit, a little aggressively. The spirit of what I meant to say is that Lost Ark devs could learn a lot from how OSRS runs it’s game. I don’t care to comment on how money is involved in either game right now, and it doesn’t seem like this video is too concerned with costs of playing, just how changes the devs make can impact a player base

Even as an RS3 player, I thoroughly enjoyed this interview hearing about Jagex, thought processes behind content and personal insight. It would be fantastic to see more of these, not only for OSRS, but also RS3 mods. Matt's ending point on, how much of an impact the game has, really hit home. From the moment I started playing some 16 years ago, RS has always been a part of my life and I can't imagine life without having being part of this community. Quite recently, 2 of my friends who met through RS got married recently and i travelled from the UK to Canada to be there. As Matt said, its the things like this that truly make this game magical.

In all honesty, I wouldn't ask him to come back. Not because I do not want him to, but because taking a step to go for something you want is NOT easy, and I couldn't be more happy that he has taken that step and feels so confident about it. I truly think he will be happy going forward. The interview was fantastic. Mat is very tactful to not say things that will not cause his former coworkers grief or future headaches, and he provided information that helped me understand a lot of the decision making and reasoning behind the curtains. As an aspiring developer, that is really valuable to me, personally. I was especially touched when he mentioned how he knows of people who got in to development because of the game he cared for, as that is how I became inspired to take the path I am on now. And of course, these answers and revelations would not have been possible if not for the fantastic direction of the interviewer. You did a fantastic job and asked a lot of the questions I personally wanted to know in regards to the game. I personally would like to know more about the man himself, rather than the game, but time is limited in an already lengthy video. Regardless, I thoroughly enjoyed listening to this while I grind out my slayer task.

27:00 of course mat k has an absolute immaculate take on fresh start worlds. i never really thought about that angle before but hes 100% right. anything dropped by mid level content like slayer drops, slayer boss drops, skilling resources etc etc are all worth piss these days. its almost impossible to imagine entering the game today and being successful through to the end game without prior knowledge. sure a beginner can put in the time and really learn but its a big ask
@DKong100

That's really on the devs themselves though. They failed to address this issue with RS2 and carried it over to RS3 and OSRS. They don't understand that game linearity helps fix this issue, and revisiting and readjusting old content periodically will fix this issue long term. On top of that they also don't understand that their "fixes" to botting also plays into this problem too. They're injecting so much more artificial gold into the game than botting ever did, and are doing absolutely nothing about stabilizing how much gold goes in and out of the game. They also do absolutely nothing to address the issues of why people bot in the first place either, and push the blame onto botters rather than reflecting on their own decisions that lead to such an outcome. A lot of these problems stem from the fact that the devs either don't directly see the issue and therefor believe that they don't exist, or just don't budge on it because they believe that their is no issue in their design.

I can see what you mean and it's why I think the smaller updates like the tutorial guy in Lumbridge were just fine. I jumped into OSRS like most players: having played rs before and with at least some idea of where to start, and with a rather large advantage of having played the holiday events when they came out and selling the stuff before players realized they wouldn't be discontinued and made an easy 1M starter cash that way. Even with all that, stuff used in END endgame osrs content like Inferno like perfect tick manipulation, constant gear switches, and utilizing third party stuff like Runelite was completely alien to me and it stoppered me pretty hard from doing anything harder than Vorkath.

To be fair though osrs was originally intended for people that played the game back in the day and want a bit of nostalgia. The worst thing they did was cater to people that never played the old game and then ruined a lot of it for those of us that liked how it was back in '07.

Me and all my brothers played it day in day out, it was like a mad house trying to shout from one room to another to tell me brother the location of where I am and that I'm going to die!!! my mates at school played it (I even use to sell a few mill to friends at school for about £6 a mill). I cant explained how much fun we use to all have in the wildy, especially if someone was skilled or we skull tricked them. One thing I would recommend is for deadman, set up an a encrypted WAN for participants requiring 2fa accounts and signing in to get the connection module, they would let you track all threat actors to help maintain control in the future.Anytime the WAN exceeds the connection limit the host can always pause while the situation is analyzed and dealt with. Jagex, you have a lot of dedicated players and.. experts playing your game - many want to help too. Don't be afraid to accept it sometimes. Crowdsourcing security is much cheaper, explain that to the hedgefund.

i got banned for botting in rs3 around 2008 to 2010, 2 times temp banned, and perma banned the 3rd time, in the appeal is just admitted it, said i botted and i was sorry and i had learned my lesson. They changed the perm ban to a temp ban, and they resetted like 100m xp, i had just maxed and lost that because they also did some stat reset, so i walked around unmaxed wearing my maxcape that i had keepsaked for a long time, had lots of fun quickchatting 98 levels while wearing a maxcape, everyone wondering how tf i was able to do that lol. eventualy i got 200m all and trimmed comp and quitted runescape, im really happy that they didnt perm ban me, because i never botted again, and they have made money they would never make if they banned me, 20years of paying member, havent stopped it yet

Besides the fact he undermines bots - 10% more like half the game bots every world there are more bots than people for sure jagex is colluded with them

He 100% dodge your question regarding the first step into addiction. He answered a question you didn’t ask him. He literally starts to look worried because if he admits on video that they knew jagex would be held responsible. There is clearly more there, is what I’m saying. Also, I am absolutely convinced that Jagex has had its fingers in the RwT and botting scene for a long time. We won’t ever hear anything about that

I'm really glad Mat dispelled the myth that investors direct development. It just does not happen because it is way too hands on. They push growth and/or profitability depending on where the company is in their lifecycle, they may outline goals that align to those ends, but they don't tell companies what to do at such a detailed level.

I imagine the amount of bots is probably a bit higher, especially if you consider those who use WMK etc lol. Excellent video and interview, loved seeing this side of him.

Most botters are casual players . Who general bot and then legit play for a bit . The bots they refer to are the ones that humans don't play on at all.

I started playing Old School RS 2004. There were alot more people playing then as there are today. I gained quite high within the game, reporting idiots etc and Jagex saw this and made me a MOD. Real life took over and I didn't play the game for some time. I couldn't reclaim my old account as a Moderator, nor did I become a member ! My account name was Graham UK, but I've not been able to recover it. Saying that, I'm now playing OS Runescape at LVL 72 non member. When I feel the need to become a member I will.... PVP needs to happen more, without the loss of personal items or apps, but a gain in player kill stats maybe !!

This won't be seen but, I had my main account years ago hijacked and used to bot, I made an appeal when I decided to finally log back on and was denied, is there any other way to speak to jagex to look into it? My appeal has been denied, is that basically the end of my account that I made in 2007? It's sad and really unfair..

@@ezrathompson just had another look and I definitely can appeal again, so sad as it is so one sided, account was banned early last year, is there no other way to fight for the account?

You can appeal and regain access to almost any account 3 years after it was banned. So you can try appealing again at that point.

I'm surprised he didn't even mention the potential for temporary modes to work as public betas for new content in the main game. That's the best way to deal with "unpolled massive changes" he talked about.
