One of the reasons that cancer deaths have risen is that people don’t die of infectious diseases like tuberculosis as often. Once you improve the safety of drinking water & treat sewage & have accessible basic healthcare lifespans go up, and so do diseases related to age such as heart disease and cancer

I completely agree, and an added note that I'd like to bring up, is that especially in places like America, it can be expensive if not nearly impossible to see the doctor regularly. Especially if you don't have insurance or don't have good insurance. When it's really hard and expensive to see the doctor, people obviously don't go to the doctor as often as they should, so by the time that do go, whatever health condition they may have has either greatly worsened or compounded with other health conditions over time. Regular preventive care can be really life-saving.

People do have more chronic illness today than before, but people also live to 70, 80, 90+ years old whereas in the past, the average life expectancy was like 40 so it’s a lot harder to have chronic illness when you are dead before it really has time to develop or become chronic…
@TheSightOfTheStars6 ай бұрын
It's also more possible to live with a lot of chronic illnesses that would have otherwise been deadly or much more severely disabling without modern medical treatment. Celiac's disease and PKU are 2 genetic disorders, and chronic illnesses, that are both pretty readily diagnosed today, and can largely be managed by diet alone for most people, but before they were understood, could catastrophically change your life for the worst. I have a friend with PKU. Had he been born a hundred years ago, he likely would never have survived infancy. Now he has kids of his own.
@adelehammond16213 ай бұрын
That's not quite true this is why statistics are funky things they aren't straight forward Yes 40 was the average age but that does not mean that most people died at 40 It means that more people died So alot of avoidable death due to medical science improvement And also a incredibly high infant death rate

Things that won't kill me: E. coli, listeria, or salmonella from raw milk, measles, mumps, or polio because I'm vaccinated, a preventable disease because I go to the doctor regularly, or from falling off the edge of the Earth.

It's based solely on how people want their lawns to look. It has to do with the standard, and what the local government wants everyone lawn to look like. I lived in New England and the crab grass that was a weed to the lawns there was actually the standard in Florida.

@annelliott13846 ай бұрын
I’ve heard of a lot of people who use backyard chickens for garden pest management because they like eating bugs. It’s unhealthy for chickens trapped in a factory farming environment to only be fed grains, but if the chickens get to hang out outside they’re gonna catch bugs themselves. They’re not vegan, but their natural diet does not include “meat” in the same way that a human’s does. People who are obsessed with being meat eaters get some really weird ideas (and then call vegans preachy, lol).

It actually used to cost $35 or something, it got cheaper a couple months ago. The medication I take for narcolepsy also costs me $29.42 a month, and without the PBS it would be over $300. And that has nothing to do with insurance, I don't need insurance to afford my medications. PBS is just part of being Australian 🇦🇺

@SoupCanGirl6 ай бұрын
To add onto @katshadwick7061 ‘s astute comment, bee allergies also tend to get worse with more exposures, so she’s likely working her way towards anaphylaxis the longer she keeps that up. Would possibly be even if it isn’t an allergic reaction. Bees might even be one of the few allergies where you can go from fine on one exposure to anaphylaxis on the next (with most allergens you have at least one serious but non-anaphylactic allergic reaction in between), but don’t quote me on that. No matter what, she’s playing with fire, and there’s a chance of her being so public about it putting someone who follows that (arguably just on the edge of "not" for algorithms) advice in serious danger, if not her herself.

If you can’t spit the toothpaste out you’re supposed to use non-fluoridated toothpaste because it will cause internal damage. I learned this from working with disabled adults who had to have specific scripts so the state would OK them using non fluoridated toothpaste because he was starting to have symptoms and testing that showed flouride toxicity. Chronic flouride toxicity can literally cause brain damage. The majority of the population doesn’t need to worry about flouride toxicity but it is a real thing and if you can’t spit out toothpaste it is a real concern. Now I experience everyday because my daughter can’t spit out her toothpaste bc her disability affects her ability to move things around in her mouth. Her dentist does a fluoride treatment every 6 months but told us to use non-fluoridated toothpaste as long as she can’t spit out her toothpaste/toothpaste spit.

Replying to myself for a different point-“what did our great grandparents do?” BARELY MADE IT THROUGH THE DEPRESSION!! MY great grandfather owned a tire business in a rural town. Then he got tuberculosis, when my grandma was three moved to Arizona to a tuberculosis hospital while my great grandmother took care of all of their kids alone and he died because dry heat does not heal tuberculosis. Then my great grandma had to move all of her kids back to the rural Midwest where her mom moved in with her and they barely made it through because they traded services and then my great uncles, great aunt and my grandma all had to work as children so that they could survive. My paternal great grandpa was drinking his life away as an alcoholic while my grandfather was digging graves with train riding hobos to make money to survive. This glorifying the 20s and 30s bullshit is ignoring any reality of what happened. Sweetheart, do you want your children to have to work at six to make money because otherwise you’re all gonna starve? Do you want your child to have to go dig graves with random men who ride from town to town on a train? Do you want to die of tuberculosis? Do you want to die of easily treatable infections? Do you have to sell your daughter to go work at someone else’s house as a nanny or housecleaner because you can’t afford to live? THAT’s what was happening in the 20’s and 30’s and even early 40’s!! My Grandma was 92 when she died in 2020 and she was the FIRST to buy any convenience product-I’ve never met a person who loved a microwave like she did because she knew the difficulty without it.

Ok. I do have to defend *some* of the things she's talking about. Almost everything she said about dandelions is pretty much true, she's just also spinning it as a conspiracy which I don't agree with. A lot of the things she said about plant medicine is actually factual and backed by research studies, however people shouldn't just go for it with plants (even dandelion) because they can have strong effects and you can make yourself feel really shitty. Even some of what she's saying about liver detoxification is technically true but that doesn't mean that everyone should start a detox of some sort. Yes, your liver does that by itself, but herbalists often help people do 'detox protocols' to help people with chronic health and inflammation challenges. The problem with her is we can't feel confident about anything she says because she's proudly a conspiracy theorist. Plant medicine is an incredible and powerful field of knowledge, but this woman isn't interested in facts whatsoever and that's why we need to ignore her, not what she said about dandelions.
@Nassifeh6 ай бұрын
Those herbalist "detox protocols" are usually just snake oil, sorry. Either that or they're mostly focused on laxatives and diuretics, which make people feel better for reasons completely unrelated to "toxins".

I really, really understand the appeal of this lifestyle. I've lived in big cities for almost 2 decades and that can take a toll on your mind, body, and spirit (especially if you're autistic & adhd like me). Both of my parents grew up on family farms in a small town. It sounds peaceful & slower-paced to live on a farm & grow your own food. Heck, I'm trying to grow zucchini right now in my apartment just to feel a little closer to nature. Especially with the rise of chronic illness people are looking for "natural remedies". It's a romantic ideal that's out of reach for most of us nowadays.
