Sadly, I think that's the biggest motivation for parents who fight like hell in the courts to look like good parents, but barely take care of their kids. They just don't want to pay (or they just want to win against their ex, no matter the cost to the kids).

Should have called the police and had them secure the kids until you got back home. Documentation is the key to situations like this it will teach her not to be a dummy as well. People deserve to know a child neglecting person is around. You could save an entire family or future partners from grief. Record all calls. You have to only communicate through a lawyer. Never allow someone that just abandons kids out front of a house without adequate supervision to ever have custody or access to the kids again without supervision. Just no, if she will do it once she will do it again. Next time you don't know what could happen or even be there. The mom doesn't have the kids' best interest at heart thus can't be trusted.
