Exact Router Depth with Turret Depth Stops | Tricks of the Trade

Find me a woodworker that reads the manual on a new tool! If you do, good for you! But for many, they end up using the tool before learning about it. One of those features that often remain "unlearned" are the turret depth stops on plunge routers. Take a minute to review their truly beneficial value in this short video.

Im the guy you just mentioned who didn't read the manual just YESTERDAY when I used my Porter Cable plunge router for the 1st time! Thanks for making this video, I just had my first play with a dewalt dw625e I was given and wondered what that was for! That’s going to save a lot of stopping and starting! I figured out the dust guard but left it off because you can’t beat having sawdust all over you, in your ears and floating in your coffee! Haha!

What you should have mentioned is that these stops are also very useful in case you need to do very deep cuts. Usually you will do these in multiple steps and this ist what these stops are made for. You can just turn the revolver and will have the next depth.

Thanks for doing a basic How To Video - lot of new woodworkers need as many of these types of videos as possible. If anyone interested, I have a video on my Channel showing the use of the depth stops on Bosch routers (smallworkshopguy). Another thing I really like about your video is that it is just over 3 minutes long - good job. I know that is not easy to do.

After you set your desired stop, you plunge the router down to that desired stop, then you hold the router down at that depth as you move the router along. But instead of having to constantly hold the router down, is there a locking mechanism that will allow you to lock the router after it hits your desired depth, that way you don't have to maintain constant downward pressure on the router as you are moving it along the board that you want to cut?

I'm a beginner and had high hopes you would provide a usable "How To" procedure for setting router depth. Unfortunately you provide no specifics which would illustrate the generalities you describe. Suggest you say "In order to make a final 1/2" depth, follow these steps...." and expalan the purpose of the turret steps in making incremental cuts to the final desired depth. Instead you offer generalities which tell me ABOUT the process, but such background does not get the job done. I agree with John Vonberg's critique.
