Look at his childhood. To go through a war, working at a factory, worrying every day that the nazis will push through and invade Moscow, making weapons as a 12 year old. Then quitting the sport altogether due to a nervous breakdown, eventually making it to Dynamo just to warm the bench for several years. He even won the Soviet hockey league which is mindblowing considering how good they were at hockey. And despite all that, being voted as the best voted european goalkeeper 9 times, winning the Olympics and the European Championship, and eventually winning the Ballon D'or. Obviously he's the greatest goalkeeper of all time and one of the most underrated players in history.

He spoke about Lev as if he had supernatural abilities, diving through the air totally horizontal catching a bladder with one hand (if you know what a bladder is then you'll know how tough and heavy those balls were). Lev Yashin is a legend of the beautiful game, always first on any World select team sheet, and a pioneer of modern Goalkeeping. Great video bro, it would be nice to see more videos of bygone heroes of Football. If i could suggest just one player i'd like to see a video of Garrinsha who played in the same Brazil team as the great man Pelé. There’s no doubt Yashin changed the scope of goalkeeping. Perhaps no other footballer has changed the game as much as he did. His athleticism with his diving saves, rapid reactions, sweeper keeper role, punching and quick release of the ball to launch attacks and the vocal role he played in organizing his team were all innovations now taken for granted, though few of even the best contemporary goalkeepers possess all these skills. But there was also his courage as one can witness in the many instances in this footage where one sees him diving at a striker’s feet. He was brave, intelligent and humble, a great example.

I remember watching this absolutely brilliant Russian goalkeeper in the 1966 World Cup. Lev Yashin. Particularly against Germany as I recall. I thought of him as a great Russian bear. I never forgot him, and always wondered what happened to him and how no one had ever mentioned him since. Thank you for bringing him back to me! I knew he was really special.

The Russians had some solid goalies, but Lev 'the Black Spider/Panther' Yashin was something else - long ago, a grand-uncle who had the good fortune to watch LY, said, "Spectacular goalkeeper. It wasn't his acrobatics, LY's strength was fearlessness: his ability to go for the ball even though he risked a kick in ribs or even the face!"

Lev Yashin was not only best goalkeeper ever, he was also a true gentleman. A real sportsman. Full of decorum. Even when his team lost, he went round shaking hands with all officials and those from the winning team.

Lav introduced modern way of goal keeping . further more in era when goal scoring was simple and often he was almost unbeatable on goal post. in todays standards i dont think people can even imagine how good he was. try to put 5 top goal keepers in one individual and you get Lav Yashin.. if your lucky :)
