Companies in America are trying out this new "unlimited time off" model, which in theory means what it says but in practice has led to an average of 40 percent reduction in vacation time in aggregate at workplaces that moved away from defined "you get two weeks/three weeks/four weeks" because our workplace culture is so toxic that "use it or lose it" was a more powerful incentive than "I need a couple of weeks off but there's a project/we're moving to a new process/I don't want them to know they'll be fine without me for awhile." It's a perfect lose/lose. Corporations exploit their workers harder while looking like "great places to work", which is bad for labor economics, and workers burn out faster and harder and do serious long-term damage to our well-being while having blame shifted onto us for not taking advantage of "the opportunity your employer gives you for work/life balance." Which is all to say I agree with you completely, and those 24 paid days off should be put explicitly, legally, contractually in writing.

Though most of the companies do offer some (avg 10-15 days annually), many expect you to not use those days (or at least not all of the days) if you want to climb the ladder.

It is easy to work because you want to. The difference is mostly an attitude change and a little planning. Cut way back on the massive over consumption, save the difference for several years, then work on the things they want, when they want. If they are working out of fear of "losing it all," they have chosen that and can chose otherwise any time, but they won't.

I've been watching adam ragusea's videos since middle school and now I'm in university. I've been here long enough to witness everything: the pizza/steak video, the cutting board meme, the white wine meme, the ytp videos to the whole array of recipes from the old to the new kitchen. The nerdy, sciency food videos are one of my favs imho, and the podcasts used to be part of my weekly routine too. I’ve grown for 20ish years and after that I was more than contant to just stay at that level (financially/job wise) and just spend most of my time learning stuff for fun and having fun in simple ways (movies, gaming, hockey, etc). I've been semi-retired since 2009 (I was 34), I've only worked part-time since and I don't really regret it. It's closed some doors but I get to live for me, not for my job. Leaves me the time (if perhaps not the money) to do things I want to do. My dad died at 52 before he got to retire and I'm not going to work myself to death like he did. I have enough, I don't need more.

Adam, as a somewhat unmanaged-declining father about your age with 3 young sons, I wonder if the greatest good (should you happen to be looking for it) could be found in "KZbin/internet accessibilizing" psychological well-being for your mostly young male audience the way you did for cooking recipes. I have seen a few of your videos trending that way, most notably with your psychologist brother. I wonder if giving younger men or Gen X-ennial fathers like myself "the language" for finding their own psychological equilibrium wouldn't feel like a fulfilling use of your internet pulpit. Maybe that could look like you broadcasting a therapy session (that does sound crazy though), or talking about the vulnerabilities of being a young father and what that means vis a vis that we may be more painfully aware of what we are passing on to our sons psychologically that our fathers may not have been considering passing on to us (generational trauma and all that). I think giving young men a framework to seek therapy or modeling how non-threatening it can be might be a very valuable use of your abundant reach. Not to get too rambly, but to quote you, "anyway, you get the point". Keep doing what you do brother!

I came and stuck around here because your videos hit a very good balance of information and brevity. You clearly are both very passionate, wanting to get some interesting information across, but also clearly value my time, and must take considerable effort to keep your videos tight or have it in you naturally from all your years of work in journalism. I think your recipe videos are a great example of this, most other outlets would take twice or so as long to impart the same or less information that is actually useful and interesting to me. Since when I assume your shift to semi retirement started (I don't fully know when it actually was) this hasn't really changed, and if anything I greatly appreciate your intense nerdiness and enthusiasm about stuff like the aquariums and the garden net on a pole. Nerdiness in the positive sense, knowledgeable and passionate about something, which most everyone is about something. I hope to see more of it!

Been a while since I caught up with you, Adam, and let me say that I am LOVING this "Adam philosophizes to the camera about whatever's on his mind" phase of the Ragusea oeuvre. For what it's worth, your definition of "semi-retired" is what John Maynard Keynes (the economist whose theories led to the New Deal and modern macroeconomics more generally) thought *everyone* would be doing by this point in human history. He assumed that as industrial technology continued to advance, it would mean that humanity needed fewer and fewer workers to produce enough goods and services for survival and basic comfort. That in turn would mean we could just distribute the remaining workload equitably and share in the prosperity. Everyone would work about 16-20 hours a week on the stuff society needs us to do to survive, but then we'd get the remainder of the week to do whatever we felt like, since society would need less and less of our human labor-hours to keep functioning. That didn't happen, arguably because we never solved the money-system side of it. In other words, productivity skyrocketed, but wages stayed the same. Depending on who you ask, some would say the power-brokers in society (capitalists, lawmakers, etc.) preferred to work fewer people for longer hours, and keep everyone else in a state of poverty, to scare the workers into working harder and accepting less wages. They could see how much worse off they might be without a job at all. Karl Marx called that the "reserve army of the unemployed," and the libertarian economist Milton Friedman had a somewhat similar concept called the "non-accelerating inflation rate of unemployment." Anyway, all of which is to say, working for money just a few days a week and spending the rest on whatever you like could have been the norm for everyone. It still can, in fact. But it's a matter of re-structuring society and re-orienting our personal thinking, neither of which is an easy task.

Man I thought that dealing with mortality was easy when I was 12, the thing is, it was easy because I didnt even start living yet there, I had not even started to build my own life, now in my early twenties I see not only what I have, what I want to get, and what I will probably get, but also what I will loose once I start to approach the end of my life and, it becomes hard, hard to let go, basically what I see is adam accepting this and slowly letting go, and I congratulate you, on this side where Im just starting to grow I imagine what it would feel to let things go too and I feel like it will be hard, but I guess with the years I will prepare myself mentally and Im glad I can see people wiser and older than deal with that reality in real time, I think it will make it easier when my time to let go arrives

One of this biggest problems with our world is how people are able to collect and hoard insanely massive amounts of resources(aka money) that they have absolutely no need or legitimate use for other then to collect more resources that they do not need, while others are suffering because they genuinely need those resources. The way you view your retirement is how I wish the rest of the world would view it as well, you have earned pretty much everything you need to get by and be happy living a life that makes you happy without hurting others in the process. For you to continue working towards “growth” would just be an absurd and immoral hoarding of resources that you have no use for, instead you are doing the moral thing, you have taken what you need, and now your channels only purpose/goal is to express yourself, not to maximize clicks and views to maximize your own income that you have no need for. People like Mr BEAST and graham Stephen could learn a thing or too from you and our world would be much better off for it. I hope to one day be half the person you are Adam, thank you for everything you’ve taught me and I can’t wait to see where your channel goes(topic/content wise not number of views)now that it is driven truly by your joy, passion, and curiosity.

Hey Adam, you do whatever you want. I feel you. My company loaded a bunch of BS projects on us this year for no needed reason. My supervisor said, "I know it's more work, but we can all grow. And we all want to grow and improve, right?" No! I don't. I'm 53 and been doing the same job, damned well I might ad, for 15 years. I don't need to grow! I just need to maintain. I'll be quitting this job shortly, I'm sure. Enjoy your semi-retirement. You're my kinda people. And I'll still stick around to see your one video a week. I've learned so much from you over the years.

Retiring from work seems like it would feel so disorienting and depressing for an amount of time. Like our whole lives most of us have been conditioned to devote a larger half of our lives to work, preparing for work and recovering from work. Without needing to work as much or at all I imagine i would be at a loss of what to do with myself but I feel it would be an opportunity to just live for other purposes. And in Adam’s case I imagine most of these endeavors will not be filmed. To Adam, I always love your videos, even the ones that aren’t about food because I love the way you explain things and think about things. So I hope to keep seeing content from you as long as that’s still part of your path.
