I never cared about what people thought - came to the genius of The Beach Boys first as a young teen in the early 90's (and paid for it being made fun of), hated metal and hip-hop, but then later came to embrace metal and hip-hop, beat-making, etc. So eventually, we all come to the same place I guess.

HCT is a really a pretty different beast that is not a clear fit for doo wop although I was surprised I was able to make it work for a full song in Diagnosing Johnny. Excellent. Another astounding thing is that the Beach Boys performed Heroes and Villains in some of their live shows. They sang those complicated parts while playing their instruments. Of course, they had wonderful side musicians that toured with them (not the Wrecking Crew, who were primarily studio musicians), and some of the side musicians sang as well.

You're definitely correct about the 3 part choir overdub, There's 20 or so minute long video on KZbin called the making of Smile and it shows Brian in the studio re-recording everything from the SMiLE album in 2003 or 2004 for his solo release of it. There are only 3 people on a mic for the sustaining chord vocal harmony.

Heroes and Villains is my alltime favorite song. There is the most beautiful 20 seconds of music ever written right after "You're under arrest!" starting with "My children were raised..." Mike love should be dipped in honey and thrown on a hill of ants for crushing Brian's dream. He'd be a wal mart greeter without Brianand his family was rich!

I wonder if Van Dyke Parks might have helped Brian a little with the complex vocals. I do kinda hear slight bits of Parks influence in Heroes and Villains. Especially the instrumental prologue at the end after the voices do a scale walk and down. Just my 2 cents.

I really like Brian Wilson! I've heard Smile - my favorite "unreleased" song by Brian is "It's Over Now" from Adult/Child also an unreleased Beach Boys album. You can hear the 10 year difference between the two songs. Mike Love said it wasn't Beach Boys music anymore. This was very interesting. I love a good musical analysis - that's what this is. Did you ever try MuseScore for Mac instead of Digital Performer? It's free and very good for writing and producing sheet music and playing back what you wrote. (I'm not affiliated with them in any way, I just like their kit.)

Great job. I think Dennis tended to sing the parts right above Mike, so he's probably the Baritone 1 part; plus, I believe there are quotes somewhere from Brian talking about Dennis doing that cupping-his-mouth thing to get a specific kind of sound. I can't think of where I've seen that, but as soon as you mentioned the technique it rang a bell. Keep up the good work!

Dubway, which I had nothing to do with writing or recording of was more of an exploration in human beat box techniques and production than it was about contrapuntal, elaborate vocals. If you listen to the harmonies and rhythms of the vocals in Dubway they are always in unison as opposed to this Heroes and Villains line which has 9 parts, most of which are doing totally different rhythms. Great job. The bass and baritone 1 at the start are just a sort of simplified stride piano bass line. Normally, the left hand alternates pinky/fingers back and forth on root and five on the downbeat, but here he does root/root. And since it's an octave jump - awkward for a singer, he splits the bass line into two voices. I'm guessing, that is. And I suspect he might have been thinking of a string section when he wrote the whole note sustain part. You can always layer parts without the ear getting confused as long as you make them distinct.

That is an interesting point about the stride piano emulation, I had not thought about it but in retrospect seems obvious enough.
