I think the reason Phil raised Eric on the river is because back door flushes are rare. And with those last 3 hearts the size of Eric's bet is suspicius. It's like he's trying to rep a flush rather than actually having one. And when do people do that? When they're weak. Any normal marginal hand would either check or bet small so he thinks a raise might actually get a fold.

I agree with a lot of what Bart says regarding Ivey's play except at 23:30, I think this was a brilliant fold by Ivey. Bart felt he should at least continue one more street. But why? He says "This is a pretty standard call". And I agree, for a mediocre player it 's a standard call. But Andy is overbetting the pot for a reason. He knows that Ivey likely hit an Ace and Ivey's aware he knows this. So then why is he betting so large? Obviously because he has the flush and is hoping to rope Ivey in. What is the point of calling the turn and then just folding the river? If Andy has the flush he's drawing dead. Is Andy really ever doing this as a bluff? Given the likelihood of Ivey continuing I think that probability is pretty low.

since phil is clearly playing a massively exploitative style, very often making big deviations because of his reads and assumptions about his villain’s ranges, I think it would have been interesting to explore the assumptions he’d be making to justify his plays. For example, in folding the AK on turned As, he is likely thinking that Andy is so value-heavy when he snap bets 150%, so it would have been interesting here to explore what Phil likely believes Andy’s range is, and what degree of accuracy he needs to make this fold. Seems like one for a node-locking analysis

Bart so break down what you think think of these stats, not just of Phil but of the better players in general. Garrett I think was around 40%...is this just a function of trying to create action/excitement on stream or having such a large edge post? I couldn't imagine VPIP- ing over even 30% but not only is GMan and others doing it, they're winning.
@brickmn808
@brickmn808 Жыл бұрын
If you are going to have a high VPIP you better be able to play well post flop. Garrett and a few others can while others... not so much. If a player has an advantage over most of the rest of the table and plays well post flop, there is no reason not see more hands

The flush over flush hand - I think I disagree with your analysis that Ivey should not be raising the river. How often does he get to that spot with air and we all think "Ryusuke's never folding a straight, 2 pair, or set . Ivey should just give up."? Doesn't that mean it's a raise? I think Ivey can absolutely get called by worse hands. He can also get called by better, which sucks for him. But you have to value own yourself sometimes, or you're just not raising enough imo. Yes, Ryusuke is not the loosest player. He did have a high VPIP but didn't seem like a blaster. So, his river lead shows more strength than others. But Ivey also has years worth of aggressive advertising that should open up Ryusuke's bet-call range. JMHO

in the second hand not sure the 7 is such a brick, as ryusuke can potentially now hold all the two pairs as well as pocket 7s. same argument can be made for a 2 brick but he’s less likely to have K2o, 92o than K7o and 97o

I agree with a lot of this analysis and think, honestly, Bart would have played the hands better than Ivey did. However I do disagree with his comments on Phil's fold. That's a GREAT fold. I understand solver's are going to want to call that A on the turn you are at the top of your range and flushes are rare. But what you have to consider is WHY is your opponent leading out for this amount (over betting the pot?). When a hand like AK is such a big part of IVey's range (Any strong A). What does it accomplish? If it were some other small spade then he could be bluffing the flush as it's easier for Ivey to fold. But do you really want to rely on the ability of your opponent to make a disciplined fold? Andy's strong enough to know a fold would be hard for Ivey here so that size makes no sense unless he actually has the flush.

I'm pretty sure Phil is still winning at the biggest nosebleed games today. I don't know how critical us alackadoos can be by picking out a tiny sample size from a streamed game and gleam much from it. We've seen Phil play like a nit. We've also seen him play crazy hands in other televised sessions. As you can see he's not afraid to give some crazy action once he's entered the hand so don't know why his play would get him disinvited to games...he lost $300k in these two sessions. How do we know he didn't play this way to balance out his actions, particularly since its televised for all his future opponents to see? There is also levelling to consider....he may know Persson's reputation and penchant to punt at any given time so took a stab at it there including that the hearts came back door so Persson wasn't likely to be playing a flush in that hand. If he plays textbook GTO then he's just going to be the same as any other GTO player in the poker world and why would he want to be ordinary?
