I wish all games had a view model as near perfect as the second game has.. and I love machine breezes view models usually, something they've gotten better at over the years and would do significantly better with in the second riddick game, before taking a step back with Wolfenstein, and then fixing all of that with the second Wolfenstein.. but whatever rare twist of fate led to the devs of the second darkness just nailing it on almost every single level with the placement, the amount of view model shown, and just having it in a shooting ready position, without having to rely on iron sights for the only shootable position in a first person game.. I'm always so confused at modern developers and why for some reason with pistols the arms retract as if you're either Quatto or you're trying to read the serial number, and then it's always off to the side and then looping through the crosshair instead of to the crosshair.. and usually the rifles are much better, which makes it all the more bizarre, when the pistol shows up.. but the rifles even, where they come up with this weird idea that in order to emulate holding it under slung, it comes out of the side of the screen like in Half-Life 2.. it's just like it is my head in the chest of this guy? Am I Quatto in most first person shooters? And.. sure ironically enough, in the case of cyberpunk the solution is to put the camera in the chest of the character LOL, but.. both retractable arms and the camera in the chest? Like seriously.. it's it's not that hard.. just put the camera where the head is.. and if you need to cheat a little bit to simulate a neck turn so you don't clip through the body.. put it out a little bit in front but then maneuver the arms accordingly.. For being one of the better examples, but still falling short in bizarre ways, The system shock remake cracked me up where they just let your arms hinge at the elbow into your body.. just like.. come on.. just put them out a little bit.. like even with the the head a little bit in front of the torso, you should be able to see a little bit more than just the wrist, if you can even see that much in a modern game LOL.. And I understand that sometimes the model is bladed, despite that never being a good idea even when it was something you saw in military.. but.. you're also running and jumping and and doing you know things that you can't really do while crap walking LOL.. so why would you even bother you know? Just put the arms out in front, make it look like you're holding the gun is all, or have arms.. or for God's sake.. put the barrel through the crosshair.. not to the crosshair! Like do it to about 100 m and then no one will ever feel the compulsion that they're shooting to the left or the right depending on if you even let hand swapping.. like it's not rocket science really! How does this happen on such a rare occasion with games like the second darkness.. hell even the first Half-Life had a pretty decent one, but mostly just by comparison to the second one which had a god-awful hand model.. and then.. and then you have games like outer worlds or to a lesser extent, but still stupid, especially with how much effort they made to make it stupid.. cyberpunk.. or Doom 2016 and eternal, which took the extra step to not only make it seem almost impossible to be holding the weapon, while gas lighting you with every cut scene when you have arms all of a sudden.. but also made it a static view model that in a game where you move so much.. LOL could have fooled me because the view model seems completely independent of anything actually going on in the in the world, even when you're shooting it.. like how is this a thing? In 2023? it was getting better when we had full body awareness.. the first riddick game was a great example of taking that seriously.. I swear people took the idea of 16x9 instead of making it a wider screen, and just went full hand into trying to translate the looking 4x3, including keeping the same fov so you just lost more of the screen in the end.. and that was if they didn't just give you a garbage FoV to begin with of something other than 90, because 90 was if you were lucky.. even though it should be about 107 to translate to 16x9.. and it's and it's not like you get to see more if the weapon is off to the side and looking awkward like you're not really shooting forward.. they still make it giant and take up a large amount of the screen real estate, they just like what am I crazy here? Am I like the only human that doesn't have an automatic binocular zoom that if I was holding an object outstretched in front of me it would only view to the wrist?

I love the Darkness 2. Most of the cool Darkness stuff in the first game happens in cut-scenes. I also didn't really care much for its claustrophobic rendition of the city. The structure worked a lot better in Chronicles of Riddick because you were stuck in a prison. So did slowly creeping from one shadow to the next. The Darkness 2 fixed pretty much all of that. You feel like a force of nature the moment you're handed the controls and it only goes up from there.

Like thats a good plot twist but damn thats some Peter Parker levels of non-stop emotional trauma” And I still feel like its a good plot twist……if it was a stand alone story, and not a continuation of established events and lore etc. but after playing the first game and learning more about the comics It just makes no sense. Even the reveal of the Darkness having Jennys soul doesnt make any sense either. Like maybe if Jackie had been tricked by the Darkness into killing Jenny himself or if Jackie accidentally killed her by some freak accident or just something that was directly his fault even though it was unintentional. THEN I could understand how the Darkness has her soul. Idk like I said the second games story makes more sense if it was the beginning of the story, the part that establishes the lore/rules of the universe. The Darkness games carry the vibe of game tie-ins to a movie series from the mid-to-late 00's, back when movies were ashamed to be adapted from comics, and so would put their leads in black leather instead of the actual costumes. After a moderate success in 2007, the producers were a bit less shy about being comic-y with the sequel, after the MCU introduced Cap and Thor. But they bungled it with a sequel setup that never went anywhere because the first sequel didn't make enough money to justify another.

Like playing chicken, but for city kids without cars. Us Long Islanders just drove at each other. You chicken out to the right. Idt anyone hit head-on, I'd remember it. Unfortunately I got to experience and love the sequel before playing the original, and surprisingly I still enjoyed the sequel quite a bit more. What I found surprising is how manipulative the scenes in the asylum was, how the darkness actually almost gaslighted me into choosing to stay in the asylum with Nurse Jenny. (The Darkling's death was one of the main reasons why I chose to jump) I have a feeling that the asylum wouldn't have been anywhere near as effective if I'd played the original game first. I felt that both games had incredible aspects, the character relationships and worldbuilding of the original were amazing, but the gameplay mechanics (Yes, even the darkling gameplay) and graphical design of the sequel was better. A few things I LOVED so much more in the sequel than the original was the Darkling who has a much more unique personality, and the model of the Darkness itself, for example the Darkness instead of both heads having the same design, one head now has a design better for grabbing and throwing, while the other now has a design better as slicing, biting, and killing quickly.

I preferred the comics near the end of the first run and during the 2nd. I don't mind a bit of camp here and there but the early stuff was just constantly all over the place, every woman looked about identical. Similar face, eyes, lips, hair, body etc. It was that way in Witchblade too. Telling the difference between Sara and ten other female side characters got pretty difficult at times till she was name dropped or seen with the Witchblade. I did love both games to death for very different reasons though. The first felt more... realistic? Creepy and heartfelt at the same time. The second was a blast to play and I enjoyed that they snuck it to be a little closer to the comics in some ways. A real shame we don't seem to be getting a third game featuring the Angelus or a Witchblade spin-off.

I actually think the fact that neither Jackie nor anyone else really directly addresses the Darknesses existence in the first game (aside from when Jackie is in limbo/hell during chapter 2 and 4) does wonders for the mystery and horrifical atmosphere of the game, makes you wonder if it's actually there or if it's all in your head, and the fact these characters are just ignoring or not questioning the blatantly demonic shit in the game helps give it an eldritch feel, like they're just choosing to ignore it or pretend it's not there out of fear of summoning it upon them.

One of the first games I ever played on PS3, always loved it. It was Yahtzee (Zero Punctuation)'s first review too, and what got me into watching him. Nice to revisit this series, thanks for the video.

Before watching the video I wanna put my two cents in because I have a nostalgic love for this series. First game I remember being meh. Didn’t play a lot of it as a kid. And I remember less. But it got the ball rolling and had me checking out the comics. 2 tho, 2 is special. Dabbled in the comics so I had a sense of the plot. But it was edgy, violent, and gory as all hell. With little twinkles of genuinely deep storytelling and philosophy. The graphics were GREAT and still hold up now with that comic-esque art style blowing up again rn. Combat was just downright euphoric😂 and at times the story had you by the balls, having you SWEAR death on all who wronged you. I. Love. 2. Still have it downloaded as we speak, boutta play again. Cannot praise the game more.

I played these games during the angstiest time in my life, and boy did they hit. Literally couldn't watch the Jenny death scene during this video because they do so well in making you see why Jackie loves her so much.

I gotta disagree on the darkness guns. They are so OP and you never run out of ammo. Once I have that and the vortex I don’t use anything else.

You know, I remember reading Wizard previewing The Darkness comics back when their were first getting started. and most of that preview being devoted to "Jackie learning of his offspring curse and trying to make a woman out of the Darkness to alleviate his stress". As well as talk about Witchblade, Fathom and related titles.

I actually wouldve preferred if they hadn't confirmed the mental hospital was an illusion. Jackie just jumps and Jennie screams in horror, cut to the hell section that might or might not be real. Would've made the game a little more memorable and kept people talking about it.

Rumor is Nightdive will be remastering the game, then we can be depressed about Jenny in 4k.

I'm still upset that they didn't make another game because I loved the second game to death.

Woah, I never imagined that such writing and voice acting could be hidden in such a relatively unknown video game series, but thinking about it, it makes sense. For one thing, so many incredible artists lurk in the underground, outside the mainstream, in what would be labeled "extreme horror fiction" for the time... For another, it makes sense that if a non-Japanese video game of thar era could be compared to Silent Hill in terms of psychological horror, it would be a scandivian one, hiring good voice actors. So metal 🤘

The first darkness game was one of those special first wave 360 releases that really pushed the hardware to its limits and tried a lot of new things. I think it’s a fantastic game with lots of memorable moments. World war 1, the orphanage and the lighthouse still live in my head rent free. All that being said, Jackie get a goddamn haircut!
