Here is an example of a late 1700's and early 1800's structural bracing to prevent lateral movement in wall framing. What would be known today as a structural shear wall.

I've learned that wood framing was designed to hold the floors, walls, and roofing while resting on old growth beams and brick pillars, as opposed to Post-1940's when the industry became standardized. To accommodate new materials such as fiberglass insulation and gypsum board, the home also became equipped with utilities such as plumbing and HVAC. This change makes the integrity of the home rely less on studs and framing and more by the sheet rock and plywood that holds it all in place.
