Very well done. Yes that area above the roof would have to be 1 hour separated. Thanks for sharing and putting this together.

Im looking into building a duplex with ICF walls. Do you think the ICF walls will pass for unit dividers and fire walls?

Could two residential units share a furnace? Or would new HVAC need to be installed?

I would check with your local building department.

Great video. What would you do when you have a basement?

A basement might not need a fire rated separation, but check with your local building department for requirements.

It all depends on the UL design of the home built. BE SURE TO READ IT CORRECTLY. I inspect these walls and adding more sheet rock doesn't mean it's done. Maybe a video with the most common UL designs.

I'm confused, adding more sheet rock doesn't mean what is or is not done.

Im looking at a duplex project right now where the common wall is a 2hr wall.. Double 5/8s on both sides and its on a slop with 3 stories.. The roof is cant( lean to) with a mellow pitch.. The staircases go up from story to story on both sides of the firewall with continues drywall throughout.. Ill have to ledger the staircase and the ledgering through the 1 1/4 drywall and, as you have pointed out.. concern is the loads from roof and trusses.. Which fasteners are appropriate for that? and staircase stringers just go right through the softer drywall into the common wall studs? It calls for 8" stagger 2x4 between 2x6 plates... I'm thinking it will be more stable and rigid of both sides are secured to 2.6's that have continuous connection to drywall on both sides instead of floating side inside the wall.. Seems like there is too much room for wobbling and eventually wearing down the softer material on the high traffic staircases.. Your thoughts? Thanks.. I enjoy watching you work these out on the CAD and talking them through.. Nice niche!

I would check with the jobsite engineer or building designer. I would think a long screw might work better than a larger and wider nail that could damage the lumber it was going into.

The normal/conversational way is to simply build two separate walls back to back with the one hour gypboard nailed and fire taped on the wall's back side while laying on the floor before it's tilted up; that way the gypboard isn't interfering with the tie-in of the rest of the framing, plus there's no penetration of the fire rated gypboard sheathing by the framing. But of course the drawback is that you're using twice as much of wall framing material for the fire wall.

Yes, good points and it would be up to the builder on where they think the fire wall separation would be best. A fire wall in between walls can eliminate penetration problems from electrical, plumbing and heating if fire wall is where you're suggesting it location to be. Thanks for sharing as always.

How how create a continues wall through the floor joist. to create a 2hour firewall after the frame has been completed?
@gregvancom Жыл бұрын
It can be done, but it will require a lot of work and depend on the type of 2 hour wall. I would contact your local building department for more information if it's going to require a building permit.

Build the two houses separately like a townhouse separated by concrete blocks

The top plate going through the type x gb would be considered a penetration. Detail showing penetrations reqd for permitting
